I am a 44-year-old child-free woman and certified cat lady. Life as a child-free person is not just about hoarding money, going on fancy vacations, or sleeping in on weekends. Stereotypes of what it means to be a child-free woman are nothing more than a caricature — though, yes, I do have cats. And though I don't want children myself, like many other child-free women, I'm an advocate for families. Because even though I'm a child-free woman, children are still important to me, and this is one key way that I've been able to contribute to their worlds.

Opinion: ‘Boysober’ comes with some baggage
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Opinion Holly Thomas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Are you sure you’re doing the right thing? Whereas “self-partnered’ connotes a vague but cheerful sense of romantic self-care, “boysober” very obviously comes with baggage. To get painfully literal about it: The existence of “boysober” implies the existence of “boydrunk.” Going boysober, one can therefore assume, isn’t just about celibacy or a break from dating. Woodard gets into this in a YouTube video she’s posted ahead of a podcast series on her boysober project. Even if you’re not wholly sure what you’re doing, claiming some agency over that process is reassuring.

[1/2] The logo of Russian technology giant Yandex is on display at the company's headquarters in Moscow, Russia December 9, 2022. Maksut Shadaev, the head of Russia's ministry of digital affairs, told parliament in December that around 100,000 IT specialists had left Russia in 2022. It is not yet clear whether Volozh's comments may have any bearing on how Russia decides to proceed with the company. One of the sources said "hawks" in state companies believed nothing at all should be paid to foreigners. Two sources said VTB had never been a serious option as a buyer, given sanctions on the state lender.

Chris Christie is embarking on a mission that even some of his fiercest allies must squint to see ending in the White House. But Mr. Christie, the former governor of New Jersey who is now 60 and more than five years removed from holding elected office, has been undeterred, talking up an undertaking that he frames as almost as important as winning the presidency: extricating the Republican Party from the grip of Donald J. Trump. “You need to think about who’s got the skill to do that and who’s got the guts to do it because it’s not going to end nicely no matter what,” Mr. Christie said in March at the same New Hampshire college where he plans to announce his long-shot bid on Tuesday. “His end,” he said of the former president, “will not be a calm and quiet conclusion.”As he enters the race, Mr. Christie has cast himself as the one candidate unafraid to give voice to the frustrations of Republicans who have watched Mr. Trump transform the party and have had enough — either of the ideological direction or the years of compounding electoral losses.

At the Fontainebleau hotel, Credit Suisse bankers were puzzled by the announcements, and concerned about their jobs being on the line, said the executive, who declined to be named. In response to questions from Reuters for this article, a spokesperson for Credit Suisse in London said: "We never comment on rumours or speculation." 'A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE'Even after Credit Suisse stopped financing hedge funds following the Archegos implosion in March 2021, the equities business remained a key part of its investment bank revenue. One option Credit Suisse is considering is to move its equities research to CSFB, Reuters reported. Slimming down the equities business would draw a further line under Credit Suisse's investment bank ambitions.

The Bank of Japan has loosened its yield-curve control, the 10-year yield has surged toward its new ceiling and pulled the yen with it. Japanese government bond futures fell fast enough to trip a circuit breaker in Tokyo and the Nikkei lost 2.8%. But markets have already taken the move as a step toward Japan extricating itself from yield curve control and near-zero interest rates. And that would bring down the curtains for the last bastion of super-easy policy in developed markets, leaving investors to ponder a higher-for-longer world. Asian shares (.MIAPJ0000PUS) spiked lower, the yen reached a four-month high on the dollar, while the yields on the 10-year Japanese bond hovered at 0.40% - just under their new roof of 0.5%.

Uniper’s new bailout mixes scars and consolations

Berlin on Wednesday effectively nationalised the stricken energy company by injecting 8 billion euros in fresh equity, and paying 78% Finnish state-held shareholder Fortum (FORTUM.HE) token compensation in return. Fortum boss Markus Rauramo has good cause to concede that his company should feel “humble” about the current deal. Deconsolidating Uniper’s losses from its accounts means Fortum’s balance sheet equity will therefore be 5 billion euros higher than it would have been. Follow @gfhay on TwitterCONTEXT NEWSGermany confirmed the nationalisation of struggling gas importer Uniper at a cost of 8 billion euros ($7.9 billion) on Sept. 21. In the second quarter alone, Fortum made a loss of 9.1 billion euros due to Uniper’s losses in gas trading.
