In a post for the new Opinion blog — which you should read! — I argued that there’s nothing mysterious or hard to grok about Donald Trump’s appeal to a large segment of American voters. It is not hard to find, throughout American history, Trump-like demagogues with loyal followings. And these men tend to represent, most often, the popular expression of a certain will to power — the freedom to dominate. Either way, these demagogues stand for a supposed right to exclude and exploit, always in defense of one hierarchy or another.

☆ SEC Keeps Pressing for Evidence of Potential Fraud at Binance.US

The Securities and Exchange Commission is still looking for evidence that Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao may have a backdoor to control assets stored on the Binance.US platform. The SEC sued Binance and Binance.US in June alleging they operated illegal securities exchanges, and its lawsuit so far has hinged on the agency's concerns about the potential for Binance to expropriate the American crypto assets in an FTX-style fraud.

BRAUNAU AM INN, Austria (AP) — Work started Monday on turning the house in Austria where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889 into a police station, a project meant to make it unattractive as a site of pilgrimage for people who glorify the Nazi dictator. The decision on the future of the building in Braunau am Inn, a town on Austria's border with Germany, was made in late 2019. Plans call for a police station, the district police headquarters and a security academy branch where police officers will get human rights training. On Monday, workers put up fencing and started taking measurements for the construction work.The police are expected to occupy the premises in early 2026. The building had been rented by Austria’s Interior Ministry since 1972 to prevent its misuse, and was sublet to various charitable organizations.

MEXICO CITY, July 13 (Reuters) - The Mexican government is no longer interested in purchasing Citigroup's (C.N) local retail arm, known as Banamex, a government spokesperson said on Thursday, adding that the U.S. bank "chose a different path" for its unit. Deputy Finance Minister Gabriel Yorio told Reuters at the time that Mexico could pursue a total or partial acquisition of the unit. Government spokesperson Jesus Ramirez did not immediately respond when asked which path the U.S. bank is taking. Before Citi's decision to list Banamex, banking sources said mining conglomerate Grupo Mexico (GMEXICOB.MX) had been eyeing the unit for around $7 billion. BERLIN, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Germany, racing to end its reliance on Russian gas, plans to introduce new regulation that will make it possible to expropriate property to link offshore liquid natural gas terminals to the grid, Handeslblatt reported. Until earlier this year, some 55 billion cubic metres of gas were pumped to Germany each year through Nord Stream 1. Nord Stream 2 never went into operation. Germany, which has for decades fuelled its vast industrial sector with copious supplies of Russian gas, pledged after Russia's invasion of Ukraine to cut its imports from Russia to zero by 2024. Four planned floating LNG terminals, including one at Lubmin where the sub-Baltic gas pipelines land, are key to that ambition.
