Barely a week after the Premier League accused Manchester City of more than 100 breaches of its rules on spending, the most expensively assembled team in Premier League history took control of the title race. Manchester City, with an all-star squad worth more than a billion dollars, returned to the top of the standings on Wednesday night with a swaggering 3-1 victory at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. There is a strong incentive to hold on to recently and expensively hired staff until the softening of the economy and the labour market is actually confirmed.
