Widely used materials, such as polyester and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), can take a long time to break down. Those materials are then shredded into small pieces, before being separated out by type, and then refined into recycled materials ready for reuse. Making shoes from shoesA shoe made of fully recycled FastFeetGrinded material has yet to hit the market, but brands are making strides to reuse materials. FastFeetGrinded is the brand’s largest footwear recycling partner in Europe; it takes Asics factory floor rejects, as well as used shoes returned in stores.

Regenvanu said there was an urgent need for a response to climate change that was rooted in international law rather than politics. Mario Tama / Getty Images filesWhile advisory opinions from the International Court of Justice or World Court are not binding, they are legally and politically significant. Experts say the court’s eventual opinion on climate change will probably be cited in climate change-driven lawsuits in courts from Europe to Latin America and beyond. “As judges of the World Court, you possess the power ... to help us course correct and renew hope in humanity’s ability to address the greatest challenge of our time,” she said. Earlier on Monday, Germany also argued that the obligations of states with regard to climate change were established in the Paris climate agreement.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Monday to approve the promotion of a general who oversaw troops during the U.S. withdrawal from Kabul, Afghanistan, after it had been blocked by a Republican senator aligned with President-elect Donald Trump. The Senate voted by unanimous consent, meaning all 100 senators agreed, to approve Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue's promotion to four-star general to oversee U.S. Army forces in Europe. Sen Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., had blocked Donahue’s promotion, NBC News reported last month, citing a Senate aide. Donahue, who was commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Kabul withdrawal in 2021, was the subject of a viral photograph as the last soldier to board a U.S. military plane out of Afghanistan. An inspector general's report in 2022 found that decisions by both Biden and Trump contributed to the troubled exit from Afghanistan.

AdvertisementNew survey data from Evercore suggests Netflix has room to raise prices. Netflix's subscriber gains from its password-sharing crackdown could be waning, and some on Wall Street think it'll raise prices soon to keep its growth going. Its quarterly survey of Netflix subscribers, published December 1, showed that Netflix is in a strong position based on market penetration, satisfaction, and likelihood of canceling. Netflix's lower-priced ad tier has also increasingly kept people from canceling while giving the streamer cover to raise prices on its pricier, ad-free tiers. The last time Netflix raised prices on its Standard ad-free plan was January 2022, when it raised it by $1.50 to $15.49.

CNN —There’ll be a strong sense of déjà vu when French President Emmanuel Macron lays the flattery on thick for Donald Trump in Paris this weekend. The president seeks to highlight US commitment to sub-Saharan Africa in the face of China’s investment-led regional power play. Trump never made it to Africa as president and seemed more interested in insulting the continent than helping it. TBILISI, Georgia — Police in Georgia arrested a prominent opposition leader early Monday after using water cannon and tear gas to scatter anti-government protesters who rallied outside Parliament for the fourth straight night. Critics saw that as confirmation of a Russian-influenced shift away from pro-Western policies, something the ruling party denies. The Coalition for Change, the country’s largest opposition party, said in a post on X that Zurab Japaridze, one of its leaders, had been arrested by police while leaving the demonstration. A new law gives some sex workers in Belgium more protection from exploitation and violence and more social benefits than any other similar legislation in the world, rights researchers and advocates say. Belgium decriminalized sex work in 2022, a first for Europe. Under this new labor law, which passed in May and took effect on Sunday, sex workers can choose to sign a formal employment contract — although they do not have to do so. “It is the most comprehensive labor law related to sex work that we have seen globally,” Erin Kilbride, a researcher at Human Rights Watch who focuses on women’s rights and L.G.B.T.Q. A labor contract will give sex workers of all genders, as it does other employees, broader access to the country’s robust social security system, including paid maternity leave and sick leave, unemployment aid and the ability to make pension contributions.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany paid a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday, his first in more than two years, to reaffirm his country’s support amid mounting concern in Kyiv that the West could scale back military aid and push for a negotiated settlement with Russia. Mr. Scholz’s trip came two weeks after he held a phone call with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to discuss potential paths to end the war. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine was particularly critical, warning that Mr. Scholz’s phone call risked opening “a Pandora’s box” by encouraging more leaders to engage with Mr. Putin, ultimately legitimizing the Russian president’s position. Mr. Scholz’s visit to Kyiv on Monday appeared, at least in part, aimed at easing those tensions, and he announced that his country would deliver an additional $680 million of military equipment to Ukraine by the year’s end. “Germany will remain Ukraine’s strongest supporter in Europe,” Mr. Scholz said in a social media post after his arrival on an overnight train.

CNN —Days of protests have rocked Georgia following the government’s controversial decision to delay the former Soviet country’s bid to join the European Union. Tensions intensified in late October when Georgian Dream claimed victory in a contested election that was widely seen as a referendum on joining the EU. Opposition TV channel Formula showed people in the central town of Khashuri throwing eggs at the local Georgian Dream office and tearing down the party’s flag. Georgian Dream, founded by a billionaire who made his fortune in Russia, has taken a sharp authoritarian turn in recent years. Experts have warned the suspension of EU talks is another sign the country is going down an undemocratic path under Georgian Dream.

Paris CNN —French lawmakers said they had introduced a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Monday, setting up a vote that could see the far right topple his government within days. However, that maneuver in turn grants lawmakers the opportunity table no-confidence motions against him – and lawmakers on the left, who have repeatedly vowed to bring down Barnier’s government, did just that. She added a warning to French President Emmanuel Macron, writing: “We have tabled a motion of no confidence. “We are going to support this no confidence vote because the French have had enough of being mistreated. They thought things would change with Barnier, but it’s worse,” Le Pen told reporters on Monday.

Investors Punish France Over Budget Turmoil

France tumbled further into financial uncertainty on Monday as the government teetered on the brink of collapse, prompting investors to sell French stocks and bonds, which has sent the country’s borrowing costs soaring. A political showdown over France’s budget could lead to the ouster of the prime minister, Michel Barnier, as early as Wednesday, after he pushed the measure through the lower house of Parliament on Monday without a vote. Mr. Barnier’s forced departure would leave the government rudderless, raising questions about the ability of President Emmanuel Macron to manage the fallout. France has become one of the most financially troubled countries in Europe, with an outsize debt and deficit that have grown rapidly in recent months. But efforts by Mr. Barnier’s fragile government coalition to address the problem, with a budget bill seeking 60 billion euros in savings for 2025, have become snared in a political minefield.

For people who care about weather and climate, one of the most concerning proposals on the table is to dismantle the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. With the rising costs of and vulnerability to extreme weather in a changing climate for the United States, dismantling or defunding NOAA would be a catastrophic error. This would not only help Americans better prepare for and survive extreme weather but also keep NOAA from falling further behind similar agencies in Europe. While the incoming administration may want to take a sledgehammer to the federal government, there is broad, bipartisan support for NOAA in Congress. Currently its mission is to understand and predict changes in the climate, weather, ocean and coasts.
