CNN —Judge Aileen Cannon had been on the federal bench for little more than a year when a senior judge offered to preside over one of her first criminal trials in her isolated south Florida courthouse. In her seven years as a Justice Department attorney, Cannon participated on the trial teams of just four criminal cases. Still, Cannon has asked questions in the Trump case that appear out of left field. Her orientation toward such legal rabbit holes is not distinct to the Trump case, veterans of her courtroom say. Ultimately, nearly every attorney CNN spoke to said that Cannon, despite the criticism, is unwavering in her beliefs about how each case in her courtroom should proceed.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

A deal for a temporary cease fire was inching into view in Israel's war against Hamas, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tempered expectations by vowing that the war would continue even if a deal is reached. “We are at war, and we will continue the war,” he said. Israel has vowed to continue the war until it destroys Hamas’ military capabilities and returns all hostages. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government maintains ties with Hamas officials, said Turkey’s foreign minister and intelligence chief were working with Qatari officials to negotiate releases. ECB hawks push back on early rate cut bets
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
"It would be unwise to start cutting interest rates too soon," Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel said in a speech. Austria's Robert Holzmann was even more explicit, arguing that the second quarter was simply too soon for a rate cut. Asked if he ruled out an interest rate cut in the second quarter of next year, he said: "That would be a bit early." The ECB held rates unchanged in October, snapping a streak to ten straight rate hikes, fuelling market bets that its record-breaking tightening streak is now over and the next move is a cut. Instead of easing policy, the ECB should tighten further, Wunsch argued, by ending early its bond purchases in the 1.7 trillion euro Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme.

Prices of futures contracts that settle to the Fed's target rate were pricing in only about a 5% chance the Fed will raise its policy rate any higher than the current 5.25% to 5.50% range. Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, rose 4%, the slowest pace in more than two years. "You can say goodbye to the rate hiking era," said Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management. The Fed is now seen as more likely than not to deliver its first rate cut in May, and end 2024 with the short-term benchmark rate a full percentage point lower than today, based on rate futures pricing. "The Fed for now will maintain its tightening bias, erring on the side of caution," she wrote.

FRANKFURT, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Divided European Central Bank policymakers opted for raising interest rates at their latest meeting to show resolve in the fight against inflation even though evidence was inconclusive, the account of the gathering showed on Thursday. The ECB raised its key interest rate to a record high of 4.0% at the Sept 13-14 meeting but signalled that its 10th hike in a 14-month-long effort to bring down inflation was likely to be the last as the economy slowed. The ECB's account of the meeting showed the decision was a "close call" given "considerable uncertainty", with some indicators suggesting a 3.75% deposit rate might have also done the job. But in the end the proposal to raise interest rates by 25 basis point was supported by "a solid majority" of the 26 members of the Governing Council. Borrowing costs have eased slightly this week on the back of Federal Reserve officials talking down the need for further interest rate increases and nervousness about the Israel-Hamas conflict spreading more widely in the Middle East.

In an interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stressed the importance of communication in fostering the country's economic relationship with China. Raimondo said U.S. businesses are "desperate" for dialogue. "I did, myself, personally, talk to over a hundred CEOs of U.S. businesses before going to China, and to say that they were desperate for some kind of a dialogue is not an exaggeration," Raimondo said. U.S. businesses need a "level playing field" in China, Raimondo said, as many fear raids or unpredictable government action toward their companies. The Commerce secretary also touched on artificial intelligence.

A pedestrian carrying an umbrella walks near the Bank of England in the City of London, Britain, July 30, 2023. Market expectations for peak Bank Rate reached 6.5% on July 11 after data showed record wage growth before falling back to 5.75% after a sharp decline in consumer price inflation. Investors see a two-in-three chance of the BoE raising Bank Rate to 5.25% on Thursday but for most economists polled by Reuters the BoE's decision is finely balanced. However, some BoE critics argue it risks causing an unnecessary downturn, and that higher rates are a poor tool to tackle inflation caused by higher food and energy prices. "The main winners are banks, whose profits have flourished thanks to higher rates," said Fran Boait, co-executive director of campaign group Positive Money.

Navigating air travel at this time of year can be fraught, but it doesn’t have to be – and if anyone’s got intel on smoothly and successfully surviving summer travel, it’s the flight attendants who’ve seen it all. When A.I. Chatbots Hallucinate
  + stars: | 2023-05-01 | by ( Karen Weise | Cade Metz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Chatbots like ChatGPT are used by hundreds of millions of people for an increasingly wide array of tasks, including email services, online tutors and search engines. But there is no way of ensuring that these systems produce information that is accurate. The technology, called generative A.I., relies on a complex algorithm that analyzes the way humans put words together on the internet. The tech industry often refers to the inaccuracies as “hallucinations.” But to some researchers, “hallucinations” is too much of a euphemism. Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing chatbots both repeatedly provided inaccurate answers to the same question.
For example, Bask Bank — an FDIC-insured institution backed by Texas Capital Bank* — offers three account types with unique returns that outperform the national average. That would come after the European Central Bank's decision on Thursday to follow through with a 50 basis point rise it pre-announced in February, prioritizing sticky inflation. Only five respondents in the latest Fed poll expected a pause, including four primary dealers, with only one bank, Nomura, expecting a 25 basis point cut. "The past week's financial turmoil will give the Fed some misgivings about pushing rates much higher," said Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank. Mericle expects more hikes however, with a peak rate of 5.25%-5.50% in Q3, higher than the poll median. Meanwhile the labor market is showing few signs of weakness, with unemployment rate forecasts broadly lower compared with last month's poll.
Everyday now we've been talking about Silicon Valley Bank — SVB — and I've had to catch myself several times from saying SBF — Sam Bankman-Fried — the guy behind the other big financial collapse in recent months. It was an unusually cold morning for Cape Canaveral, Fla.—too cold, warned the engineers of NASA contractor Morton Thiokol, builder of the shuttle’s solid rocket motors. The day before the launch, Thiokol engineers and executives met with NASA officials on a teleconference. A Thiokol engineer reported the anticipated temperature during the following day’s launch time would be around 26 degrees. Erring on the side of caution, Boisjoly, Thompson and other engineers recommended delaying the launch.
"It just feels like there's an erosion of democracy," a school board member told Insider. Ron DeSantis' administration banned the teaching of Advanced Placement African American Studies classes in Florida schools this week. Hillsborough County School Board member Jessica Vaughn, who represents District 3 in Tampa, told Insider the decision made her feel "extremely upset and horrified, but not surprised." I mean, aside from the erosion of traditional public education, it just feels like there's an erosion of democracy," Vaughn told Insider. DeSantis' office, the College Board, and the Florida Department of Education did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
In that light, the Fed's interest rate hiking cycle is close to an end. That is still well above the Fed's target, but the speed and direction of travel since June's four-decade high of 9.1% is clear. U.S. breakeven inflation rates - the gap between yields on inflation-protected Treasuries and regular notes - reflect this. The two-year breakeven inflation rate this week fell as low as 2.02%, the lowest since December 2020. This will drive down the average inflation rate, whatever the time horizon.

Stubborn inflation puts Fed on deadline

NEW YORK, Nov 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Inflation is coming down in the United States, but is still too high for comfort. The year-over-year inflation rate eased more than expected – economists polled by Refinitiv had expected 8% - but the cost of food, energy, and housing still increased dramatically. Fed Chair Jerome Powell warned on Nov. 2 that there’s a risk that expectations of higher inflation become entrenched. When Americans expect higher inflation, businesses are inclined to raise prices and workers are liable to ask for higher wages, which amplifies the increase still further. If Powell really wants to tackle the fear of inflation as well as inflation itself, something bolder might be in order.
ZURICH, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Central banks need to resist political pressure to slow monetary policy tightening as they hike interest rates to fight resurgent inflation, Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan said on Tuesday. Risks to central bank independence are "real and present around the globe, also in Switzerland", Jordan said in remarks prepared for a lecture to the Peterson Institute in Washington. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Register"Moreover, as inflation is persistent and higher than central banks' targets, central banks are politically more vulnerable." But to fight inflation effectively, central banks needed to be independent – "precisely at a time when such independence is at risk because of high inflation", Jordan said. Still, Jordan noted that in some instances politicians have started questioning central bank independence, although he did not mention any countries.
