Shares of Swedish telecom firm Ericsson jumped amid third-quarter core earnings that surpassed analyst expectations and growth in North American demand. Net sales shed 4% year-on-year to 61.8 billion Swedish crowns in the third quarter, but nevertheless surpassed analyst expectations of near 61.6 billion, according to Reuters estimates. North America emerged as a bright spot in the sales picture, with year-on-year growth of more than 50%. "North America was the first to roll out 5G, and of course they were also the first to therefore slow down the pace. The North American growth offset steep third-quarter sales declines in both north east and south east Asia, where telecommunication companies have recently been focusing on developing markets such as India.

The Olympics will challenge wireless providers as 15 million people seek internet access at once. To meet that expectation, telecommunications companies must bolster Paris' 5G network, the technology system that powers users' mobile-internet access. Harnessing private 5G infrastructureOrange is installing cellphone antennas on boats and extension units in sporting venues to bolster its 5G network. It uses 5G's network-splicing capabilities to reserve a part of the public 5G network for private use. Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson reported a smaller-than-expected 7% drop in second-quarter sales on Friday as sluggish demand for 5G gear in most markets was slightly offset by 14% growth in North America. Revenue dropped to 59.9 billion crowns ($5.69 billion) from 64.4 billion crowns a year ago. Analysts, on average, had forecast revenue of 58.3 billion crowns in an LSEG poll. Both companies were more upbeat in April, however, projecting a stronger second half of the year. However our sales will benefit during the second half from contract deliveries in North America," said CEO Börje Ekholm in a statement.

Emodo had only this year brought on a new team to help it build AI-powered ad solutions for connected TV. The closure of Emodo marks the latest in a long line of telco-adtech collaborations that have bitten the dust. "We remain confident in a stronger second half and achieving our full year outlook," he said in a statement. The company repeated an outlook announced in January for a comparable operating profit in 2024 of 2.3-2.9 billion euros. Nokia in January forecast a demand recovery in the second half of 2024.

Operating profit excluding restructuring charges grew unexpectedly, to 4.3 billion crowns ($394.40 million) from a year-earlier 4.0 billion despite a 15% sales drop. The profit included a one-off gain of 1.9 billion crowns related to the resolution of a commercial dispute, Ericsson said. "In the second half, our margins should benefit from improved business mix," it said. Ericsson on Tuesday forecast a gross margin excluding restructuring charges at the Networks division of 42%-44% for the second quarter of 2024.

Heightened tensions in the Middle East, including the possibility of Iran attacking Israel, sent stocks back down and oil prices higher. If the choice is between a weak economy with lower rates or a strong economy with higher rates, we'll take the strong economy every time. Low rates may help with valuation multiples, but it's a strong economy that leads to earnings growth and that's what we, as long-term investors care about. Shelter costs are a major sticking point for overall inflation, which makes Tuesday's housing starts and building permits report a key watch item. We'll get another look at housing with the release of the March existing home sales report on Thursday.

Ericsson recently announced it is planning to cut 8,500 jobs as part of its cost-cutting measures. Ericsson announced on Monday that it will lay off around 1,200 employees in Sweden as the telecom company faces slowed demand for its 5G equipment. Last year, the company laid off 8,500 staffers, or about 8% of its workforce, to cut costs. Ericsson had 99,950 employees, including 10,744 workers in North America, at the end of last year, according to an SEC filing. In 2023, more than 260,000 workers were let go from almost 1,200 tech companies.

Ericsson to lay off 1,200 people in Sweden amid challenging market
  + stars: | 2024-03-25 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Sweden's Ericsson on Monday said it would lay off about 1,200 employees in Sweden as a part of costs cuts announced earlier this year, citing a challenging mobile networks market and lower volumes in 2024. After a few years of high demand for 5G equipment, buying by telecom providers has slowed, prompting firms such as Ericsson and Nokia to lay off thousands of employees to save costs. "As previously stated, Ericsson expects a challenging mobile networks market in 2024, with further volume contraction as customers remain cautious," the company said in a statement. Ericsson will continue its initiatives to increase operational efficiency during 2024, but will not make any separate statements on those, it added. Ericsson had told Reuters in January it could look at further cost cuts this year including layoffs but without giving a specific number.

Jason Alden | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesBARCELONA — British telecommunications giant BT says it expects to launch its first so-called "standalone 5G" network in 2024. Howard Watson, BT's chief technology officer, told CNBC that the telco group plans to switch on its standalone 5G network, which is often referred to in the industry as "true" 5G, later this year. "We've already been ensuring that the SIM cards that our customers have in their current 5G devices can do 5G standalone," Watson added. 5G standalone is different from 5G Advanced, though. 5G standalone refers to the development of a 5G network that isn't being built on top of 4G cores.
