It was one line from an itinerary of an upcoming field trip to Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. And no place proved more prescient than those Capitol steps. Deep in my heart, I was certain that one day I’d be living in Columbia as a college student. Illustration Ian Berry/CNNThe cosmos and crimeThe afternoon stops solidified the revelation I felt on the State House steps. For me, it was a mere 60-mile, in-state field trip – culminating with a Boxed Lunch on the Capitol Steps – that proved to be my date with destiny.

In Amazon’s movie, Hathaway’s character, Solène, meets cute with Harry Styles-esque singer Hayes Campbell (Galitzine) at Coachella. The movie launches into a montage-heavy romp around Europe before the couple’s outed publicly, at which point a million cougar headlines take flight. I’d like to think this hoopla is overblown, that it wouldn’t really happen in this day and age. But that beautiful bed in her living room … she probably f**ked or fondled or kissed people on it all the time. “But on the other side of that it’s like, ‘Why the f**k weren’t you greenlighting it before?”

But for Thirlwell, Celine is more like the chair in the corner of a bedroom where, by some quirk of gravity, everything always ends up. Just because Celine mistrusts language, seeking instead “something which language was pointing to but which escaped it forever”? To read a Thirlwell novel is to be forced to stroke one’s chin. Like Celine, Heti’s protagonist, Mira, communes with what seem to be voices of the universe and falls in love with other women. Then Celine was green too.” Let that sink in.

My generation was raised on the idea that happiness is a choice, so I get mad at myself for feeling other emotions. That's why, when I heard about the University of Pennsylvania's "monk class" last spring, I wanted to test drive its curriculum. The formally titled "Living Deliberately" course requires students to "observe a code of silence" and "abstain from using all electronic communications" for a month, according to the university's website. So at the end of August, I took a 48-hour vow of silence and no technology, ranging from a Sunday afternoon to a Tuesday afternoon. And I learned something that upended my sense of happiness, and how to achieve it: Less is often more.

I tried living like a monk for 48 hours. It's unusual for me to go 48 seconds without talking or checking my phone, let alone two days. I was inspired by the University of Pennsylvania's "monk class," actually called "Living Deliberately." I wanted to achieve that level of awareness, but my livelihood depends on my voice and three-pound work laptop. A seven-day break from Twitter and TikTok reduced levels of depression and anxiety in a small randomized trial, U.K.-based University of Bath researchers found last year.

CNN —“Barbie” comes roaring out of the gate with an inventiveness and energy the movie perhaps inevitably can’t sustain. Still, the closest kin would probably be “The Lego Movie,” which similarly took a familiar toy and built a kind of existential crisis around it. Simu Liu, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in "Barbie." To pass Justin McDaniel's "monk class," University of Pennsylvania students must ditch their phones — and voices — for 30 days. The class's stringent rules, modeled after actual monk practices, aren't meant to socially isolate the students. "We exercise to build muscle and endurance, but we don't practice emotions," McDaniel, a humanities professor who practiced as a monk for nearly a year at age 21, tells CNBC Make It. The monk class is supposed to be like "shock therapy," a crash course to jolt students into mindfulness: Spending a month with fewer distractions helps students become more aware of their physical surroundings and emotions, he says. In the class, McDaniel teaches that doing one thing at a time is the best way to stay present.

Oyakodon Is Bliss in a Bowl

Oyakodon Is Bliss in a BowlGood morning. Bryan Washington has a lovely column in The New York Times Magazine this week about the joys of oyakodon (above), the Japanese rice bowl with chicken and egg. The name translates to “parent-and-child bowl.”Bryan’s eaten oyakodon all over Japan, and he’s perfected it in his home kitchen. …MondayI love this Ali Slagle recipe for crisp gnocchi with sausage and peas, draped in mustard and melted Parmesan cheese. It’s a hearty meal that feels like spring, but if you want to plush it up a little against a cold snap, add a splash of heavy cream.
The Particular Magic of Chicken, Egg and Rice

Even just watching the glistening bowls of animated katsudon — fried pork loins, simmered in eggs — in animated episodes of “Yuri!!! But while every iteration of donburi is three kinds of magical, oyakodon is what I’ll always return to. Tiny epiphanies: the chicken’s suppleness, the egg’s slickness, the reassuring tug of rice on your teeth. Or my calibration of liquid to filling wasn’t quite hitting, overtaking the bowl of rice rather than collaborating with it. With every attempt, your preferences may change, and with every alteration you make, oyakodon becomes squarely, and decidedly, yours.
Now New York Democrats Tell Us

’Tis the season for epiphanies, and what do you know? It’s finally dawning on some New York Democrats that the state’s steep income tax rates are driving away top earners who fund essential public services. If only this wisdom had visited Democrats in Albany before they raised taxes last spring. Like an annoying music tape that keeps repeating, progressives are calling on Democratic lawmakers to raise taxes on the rich—again. The Federal Reserve’s monetary tightening has resulted in lower capital gains and trading revenue on Wall Street, which is hurting state and local budgets.
Centering on Julia Roberts and George Clooney, two great, aging stars of rom-coms past, “Ticket to Paradise” was always going to be a throwback. Clooney and Roberts play David and Georgia Cotton, a long-divorced couple. The divorced couple who reconcile is an old rom-com trope. Even young gorgeous individuals in a tropical paradise aren’t as effortlessly, gracefully charming as George Clooney and Julia Roberts batting putdowns back and forth. That’s ultimately also the biggest similarity between the two generations of rom-com love.
An animal voyage is special because it requires us to make many journeys all at once. To return home from an animal voyage is to become, yourself, a new animal living in your old habitat. “If the snow leopard should manifest itself, then I am ready to see the snow leopard,” Matthiessen writes. The Ayahuasca Diaries

But please understand: I didn't drink ayahuasca so I could write an article about it. I wrote an article about it so I could drink ayahuasca. I was desperate to drink ayahuasca — I had been for several months, in fact — and the formality of an assignment would help me out at home. Instead, a friend of a friend linked me up with an ayahuasca sangha, a Buddhist word for a spiritual community. I thought of my old friend, Scott, who, many years before, had declined an opportunity to drink ayahuasca.
