An American professor at Princeton University and a British-Canadian professor at the University of Toronto won the Nobel Prize in Physics on Tuesday for research that “formed the building blocks” of a key part of artificial intelligence. Since the 1980s, the pair have been using tools from physics to develop the foundations of what is known as “machine learning,” one of the core concepts of AI widely used today. Their research “formed the building blocks of machine learning, that can aid humans in making faster and more reliable decisions,” Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, told a news conference. Hopfield has been a key influential figure in this field since 1982, when he invented the “Hopfield network” — a method widely used since. Hinton used this basis to come up with “the Boltzmann machine,” which can used for tasks such as classifying images.

CNN —The 2024 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their “foundational discoveries” that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks. Mimicking the brainAI has become shorthand for machine learning using artificial neural networks. Whereas the brain’s neurons communicate with each other through synapses, artificial nodes influence each other through connections. You can train an artificial neural network by developing stronger connections between the nodes, just like you can train the brain. Did you know that an artificial neural network is designed to mimic the brain?

CNN —For months before the 1997 premiere of “The Puppy Episode,” the groundbreaking episode of Ellen DeGeneres’ hit sitcom “Ellen,” rumors swirled that the comedian and her fictional counterpart would come out as gay. Until “The Puppy Episode,” the character had rarely dated and mostly resisted romance, deviating from sitcom conventions of the time and frustrating network executives. Ellen Morgan never did get that puppy, but the episode made history as Ellen became one of the first out gay lead characters on TV. “That’s why it worked — because it was real.”How ‘The Puppy Episode’ got madeThe making of “The Puppy Episode” started with DeGeneres. Gay innuendos abound from the first episode of Season 4: A microwave or doorbell dings when a character says the word “gay,” Savel said.

This is the first installment of Visual Studies, a series that explores how images move through and shape culture. I consider the white T-shirt to be a star maker. Whether it’s on Marlon Brando or James Dean, Glenn Close or Glen Powell, we’ve seen how a white T-shirt at just the right moment can burn its way into an audience’s memory — as happened this summer when a showstopping scene featuring Mr. Powell in a wet white T-shirt in “Twisters” became a sensation. What’s more, the white T-shirt onscreen and on celebrities has become a symbol of how Americans want to imagine ourselves: unfussy, hardworking, laid-back and egalitarian.

Among the features that distinguish capitalist society from its predecessors, the political theorist Ellen Meiksins Wood once observed, is “the differentiation of the economic and the political.”The state, Wood pointed out, “stands apart from the economy even though it intervenes in it,” so that everyone — owner and worker, boss and bossed — can claim ownership in it “without usurping the exploitative power of the appropriator.”Or as the philosopher Nancy Fraser puts it, “the power to organize production is privatized and devolved to capital” while the “task of governing ‘noneconomic’ orders, including those that supply the external conditions for accumulation, falls to public power, which alone may utilize the ‘political’ media of law and ‘legitimate’ state violence.”The upshot of this dynamic is that democracy under capitalism is necessarily of limited scope. We have the power and capacity to regulate and structure the market, but the fundamental questions — of production and surplus, of ownership and social reproduction — are beyond the reach of democratic decision-making as presently constituted.

Because anti-smoking groups aren’t just fighting the tobacco companies these days. They have fractured over tobacco harm reduction — the idea that people who cannot or will not quit smoking should be provided with alternatives, notably e-cigarettes, which deliver nicotine without burning tobacco. They argue that e-cigarettes will lead to a new generation addicted to nicotine, even if they are not smoking. It focuses largely, but not entirely, on reduced-risk nicotine products, a category that includes e-cigarettes, oral tobacco, and “heat not burn” products that warm up tobacco without burning it. There are no safe tobacco products; all fall along what’s called a continuum of risk.

Outside the big, tall windows of Ellen Maddow and Paul Zimet’s Manhattan loft, in a former garment factory on Mercer Street in SoHo, is a slice of the New York skyline: up close, rooftops of old brick buildings, solid as can be; farther off, glass towers — taller, sleeker, colder, newer. In a city forever in flux, Maddow, 75, and Zimet, 81, have stayed put for half a century, creating experimental theater in the skylighted boho oasis that cost $7,000 to buy in 1973, and where they raised their family. Having arrived in the neighborhood when it was scary-scruffy, long before it went way upscale, they have remained stubbornly devoted to each other, and to their venerably niche downtown company, Talking Band, which turns 50 this year. That kind of history can sound utopian from the outside. But misunderstanding is a risk they’re taking, cautiously, with “The Following Evening,” a new play in which they portray slightly fictionalized versions of themselves, in slightly fictionalized versions of their lives.

NEW YORK (AP) — Christopher Nolan was still sleeping when his film, “Oppenheimer," landed a leading 13 Academy Awards nominations Tuesday. “Oppenheimer,” Nolan's sprawling American saga of J. Walter Oppenheimer and the creation of the atomic bomb, has more or less been the Oscar frontrunner since it made its acclaimed debut in late July. It came one nomination shy of tying the record for best Oscar nominations ever. “It's flabbergasting," said Thomas who spoke with her husband in an interview a few hours after nominations were announced. And so I think that’s something that really touched audiences.

BANGKOK (AP) — US and Chinese officials have completed the third meeting of a working group established to cooperate on financial issues, in a step that continues the trend set by the two powers last November to ease tensions. Officials from the U.S. Department of the Treasury met with counterparts in the People's Bank of China to discuss issues ranging from financial stability to countering money laundering. The delegation also met with Vice Premier He Lifeng while they were in China, according to a statement from the Treasury Department Friday. In November, Yellen met with He in San Francisco. Their two-day meeting was seen as paving the way for the later meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and China's President Xi Jinping.
