For the second time in eight years, the highest, hardest glass ceiling survived millions of tiny cracks, once again testing the optimism of those who hope to see the first female president elected. The late Rep. Shirley Chisholm, a former New York congresswoman, became the first Black woman to seek the office in 1972. “I’m ready for a female president, I just don’t think that most of America is yet, and I don’t know why,” she said. In the Senate, Angela Alsobrooks will be the first Black woman to represent Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester will be the first woman to represent Delaware. Together, the two Democrats will be the first two Black women to serve in the chamber at the same time.

GOP senators and top aides say the race could go either way. Scott, who is a McConnell critic, has been more willing to fall in line with Trump than Cornyn or Thune over the last several years. Both Thune and Cornyn are closely politically aligned with the longtime GOP leader. Asked if he would like to get more public endorsements from GOP senators, Thune said he is not asking anyone to do that. They also point out his remarkable ascent – he defeated then-Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004 and is now on a path to possibly becoming GOP leader.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to meet with her vetting team today for a series of in-depth presentations on each of the finalists to be her running mate, according to a source familiar with the process. Each briefing is expected to last about 60 to 90 minutes, but some could be shorter or longer depending on what needs to be discussed, how complicated the vetting was, and any follow-up questions Harris may have. As CNN previously reported, the finalists include Pennsylvania Gov. According to multiple sources, the material in the vetting is expected to crystallize her choice of the top tier of finalists. Harris’ top consideration is electability, sources familiar with her thinking told CNN.

In initial data from late June and through July, about 8 in 10 Americans said each week that they’d read or heard at least something about Biden or Trump, respectively. But the focus had shifted away from his criminal conviction: first to his debate against Biden, and then to the assassination attempt against him. By contrast, two more standard campaign milestones – the Republican National Convention and Trump’s selection of a running mate – drew less public attention. The Breakthrough survey project will run throughout the 2024 campaign, tracking the things Americans say they read, hear and see about the candidates. Looking at the trend over time shows a sharp divergence between the conversations around Trump and Biden following the presidential debate.

That’s a closer contest than earlier CNN polling this year had found on the matchup between Biden and Trump. Half of those who back Harris in the new poll (50%) say their vote is more in support of her than against Trump. Among voters under 35, 49% said in April or June that they would support Trump and 42% Biden, but now, 47% support Harris to 43% for Trump. Among Hispanic voters, Biden trailed Trump in earlier polling 50% to 41%; those same voters now split about evenly, 47% Harris to 45% for Trump. That narrowed gap is driven at least partly by increased Harris support among independents who lean toward the Democratic Party.

Ms. Harris seems almost certain to become the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee after President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election. He defeated Mrs. Clinton in 2016 in spite of her winning the popular vote by a wide margin. Ms. Harris has neither the political legacy nor the baggage of Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Trump, having served a turbulent term in office, is now a known quantity. Ms. Harris is Black and of South Asian descent.

“Anyone who thinks this is over is mistaken,” said one House Democrat about the ongoing conversations happening behind the scenes. The delay stopped a draft letter circulating among House Democrats that, if made formal, would have exposed further cracks in the party. ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reported earlier Wednesday that Schumer told Biden on Saturday that it would be best if Biden bowed out of the presidential race. At one point, Biden told Crow, “I don’t want to hear that crap” in addressing the lawmaker’s concerns. In response, Biden told Houlahan that his team would get her talking points about all of the things that he has done for Pennsylvania, reminding her that he married a Philly girl.

Just before a gunman fired at Donald J. Trump at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday, we concluded a new set of New York Times/Siena College polls of Pennsylvania and Virginia. While the polls were completed before the shooting, they still offer context about the state of the race. Five years ago, Joe Biden was the “electability” candidate — the well-liked, moderate Democrat who promised to beat Donald J. Trump and had the poll numbers to back it up. The polls don’t back up President Biden’s electability case anymore. In this morning’s latest New York Times/Siena College polls, he trails by three percentage points among likely voters in must-win Pennsylvania, while he leads by a mere three points in Virginia — a state he carried by 10 points four years ago.

Tonight, we’re taking a look at the strategy behind President Biden’s efforts to steady his candidacy. The latest developmentsAn expert on Parkinson’s disease visited the White House eight times in eight months, including at least once for a meeting with President Biden’s physician. Jill Biden, the first lady, emphasized to voters in several states that her husband was “all in” on his campaign. A defiant President Biden sent a simple message on Monday to the detractors who say he needs to bow out of the presidential race: Bring it. “Any of these guys that don’t think I should run, run against me.

This week's dispatchWin McNamee/Getty Images; iStock; Rebecca Zisser/BIPressure on Biden buildsUS President Joe Biden had a terrible debate. He's done little to turn things around since and appears to be in denial over the damage done to his campaign. AdvertisementThat's the story of a critical 10-day period in the US presidential race, which kicked off with Biden's historically bad debate performance. Biden's poor performance led to a Democrat freak out and growing calls for Biden to step aside. Neither sentiment is likely to satisfy the many Democrats who have serious concerns about Biden's mental acuity and electability.

It was, in the end, an interview as personal as it was political, a cross-examination more focused on the psyche and the inescapable reality of aging than on any points of policy or governance. Respectfully but firmly, the ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos on Friday pressed President Biden, again and again, on the basic questions that Americans had asked themselves over the past eight days, since 51 million people saw a diminished Mr. Biden struggle to perform on the debate stage. “Are you more frail?”“Have there been more lapses?”“Have you had a neurologist, a specialist, do an examination?”And as Mr. Biden dismissed all those concerns one by one — flicking away the cascading worries about his health, his electability, his capacity to serve in his office for four additional years — Mr. Stephanopoulos zeroed in on the matters of pride, dignity and self-worth swirling beneath the surface.

To the Editor:Re “Seven Theories for Why Biden Is Losing (and What He Should Do About It),” by Ezra Klein (column, nytimes.com, May 19):President Biden,Your campaign is failing, as spelled out plainly by Mr. Klein, and your chances of winning seem increasingly out of reach. For a long time now polling has consistently shown low approval ratings, the preferences of most voters that you not run again and qualms about your age, but you decided to run anyway. You insisted that you were the best candidate to beat Donald Trump and that you must do so for the good of the country. Most voters don’t want Mr. Trump or you to run again. Democrats can bolster their chances of winning by running a different candidate, a candidate with fresh energy and perspective who could stir passions and motivate people to vote — none of which you’ve demonstrated an ability to do effectively.

Silver Spring, Maryland CNN —The farmers market in this suburb of Washington, DC, was a ripe crowd for Angela Alsobrooks, who’s locked in an increasingly contentious Senate Democratic primary on Tuesday. “I would really like to see a Black woman in the Senate. DOHERTY: In the early decades of the republic, presidential candidates adhered to the norm that they should not actively campaign for office. CNN —Ohio’s Republican Senate primary on Tuesday – this year’s first test of Donald Trump’s clout in a contested Senate race – will help determine a key question this fall: What is the fate of Sen. Sherrod Brown and the Democratic majority? Despite already having clinched the GOP presidential nomination last week, Trump has a lot on the line in Ohio on Tuesday. “Trump endorsed Bernie Moreno for Senate.”But Democrats are also trying to use the former president’s popularity in this red state to their advantage. At over $40 million as of Monday, Ohio’s Senate race trails only the US presidential race, the 2023 Kentucky governor’s race and the 2024 California Senate race in total ad spending so far. “The person who clearly has the best shot of winning in the fall is Matt Dolan – I think our common sense tells us that.”But the governor’s backing could cut both ways for Dolan, Ohio Republican strategists told CNN.

Both President Biden and former President Trump are focused on the November general election. But they must first win over voters in a slew of primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday. Ex-UN ambassador Nikki Haley has continued to campaign vigorously against Trump in the GOP primary. Headed into Super Tuesday, Trump has won nearly every GOP contest against his remaining major intraparty challenger, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley. Here's a look at the states (and the territory) where voters will head to the polls on Super Tuesday:

The electorate for the South Carolina Republican primary looked much more like the one for January’s Iowa caucuses than for the New Hampshire primary, the early exit poll found. As in Iowa, well over 4 in 10 South Carolina primary voters describe themselves as affiliated with the MAGA movement. Exit polls are a valuable tool to help understand primary voters’ demographic profile and political views. The exit poll for South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary was conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the National Election Pool. It includes 1,990 interviews with Republican primary voters across 40 different polling places on Election Day.

Senate Republicans’ campaign arm on Tuesday endorsed Kari Lake in Arizona, signaling the party’s embrace of a firebrand candidate in a state central to their efforts to regain a majority. The National Republican Senatorial Committee’s endorsement, first reported by Politico, reflects Ms. Lake’s efforts to make nice with a Republican establishment that she blasted in her 2022 campaign for governor, and that has long had concerns about her electability. “Kari Lake is one of the most talented candidates in the country,” the committee’s chairman, Senator Steve Daines of Montana, said in a statement. “Kari is building out an effective campaign operation that has what it takes to flip Arizona’s Senate seat in November.”Ms. Lake is seeking the Republican nomination in what could be a three-way race for the seat currently held by Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Representative Ruben Gallego is the front-runner on the Democratic side, and Ms. Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in 2022 to be an independent, has not confirmed whether she will run for re-election.

His dominance in the polls and at the polls this year make clear the will of the people: They want Mr. Trump to be No. Hence the curiosity: Who does Mr. Trump want to be his No. As a congressman representing Indiana, Mr. Pence had worked in Washington for 12 years, but never became Washington. Talk has turned to whether Mr. Trump should choose an insider or an outsider, a man or a woman, a legislator or an executive. Yet I think the most important vice-presidential selection question for Mr. Trump is less “who?” than “why?” In other words, the individual should complement, not complicate, his America First record and vision, and recognize the difference between loyalty-as-tenacity (yes) and loyalty-as-obsequiousness (no).
