The High Risk, High Reward Trump Market
  + stars: | 2024-11-22 | by ( Jeff Sommer | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Markets abhor uncertainty. That bit of Wall Street wisdom helps explain their ebb and flow since Donald J. Trump’s victory on Election Day, and even earlier. Stocks and bond yields began rising early in October, when Wall Street concluded that Mr. Trump would win. Yet for the markets, uncertainty hasn’t vanished. He promises lower corporate taxes and less regulation: Those assurances are being widely interpreted as a recipe for fat company profits and a prosperous stock market.

“It’s like Typhoid Mary being in charge of food safety.”But another group was celebrating Trump’s pick: the anti-vaccine movement Kennedy leads. She and Polly Tommey, director of CHD.TV and a longtime anti-vaccine activist, reflected on Kennedy’s power within their campaign. Holland urged viewers to “educate” the public and Congress that Kennedy’s anti-vaccine claims were accurate, aiming to boost his support among senators who would vote on his confirmation. Kennedy now has a chance to bring that advocacy into the top public health office in the country. Stone replied, “I am over the moon about the appointment.”Others relished how Kennedy might bring a dreamed-about reckoning in public health agencies and retribution against former public health officials.

Trump’s Hispanic vote percentage beat the previous record, set by George W. Bush's in 2004, when Bush won as much as 44% of the Hispanic vote. Pennsylvania voter Regino Cruz, 25, said Tuesday that he voted for Trump, believing the former president could improve the economy. In the battleground state of Pennsylvania, 4 in 10 Latino voters supported Trump, up from 3 in 10 in 2020. Carlos Odio, co-founder of Equis Research, a Democrat-leaning polling and research company, said Latino voters who backed Trump liked his prioritization of the economy. “Trump is going to put an end to that.”Hispanic men were key in propelling Trump to victory and a historic Latino vote share.

During my pregnancy, I spent so much energy focusing on finding the right day care. AdvertisementEventually, we found ourselves having two kids in the same day care, which cost a fortune. Finally, someone from a big chain day care got back in touch and said there might be a spot. AdvertisementOnce again, my husband and I sat down and had to figure out how we were going to afford to put another child in day care. We ultimately built up a savings account that would take us through six months of their day care tuition.

When I'm sitting with a stressed-out patient in my office and I raise the importance of healthy relationships, they almost always intellectually understand. But it's critical, because healthy relationships help people thrive. As Robert Waldinger, director of the decades-long Harvard Study of Adult Development, has explained: "The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Here are three surprisingly simple and actionable strategies you can use to lift loneliness, make connections, and start to foster healthy relationships, all of which can be easily implemented even in your busy daily life. Just make sure you're being mindful of your limited time and energy, so you don't burn out in the process.

LOS ANGELES — Major drama occurred in the opening game of the 2024 World Series that may have decided which team won Game 1. As the ball was coming down, a fan reached out over the railing and snagged it in his glove. But Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández flailed his arms in protest, saying the fan interfered with the ball. The controversial play drew comparisons to legendary fan interference call such as Yankees fan Jeffrey Maier at the 1996 ALCS who reached over the stands at Yankee Stadium to aid Derek Jeter’s home run. When official word made its way to The Wall Street Journal newsroom that Evan Gershkovich had been released from Russian custody Thursday, unadulterated elation washed over the journalists who had taken part in a 16-month-long pressure campaign to seek his freedom. One, in particular, summed up the mood among Biden’s donors, he said. After weeks of turmoil over the future of the Democratic ticket, Kessler said the campaign donors he’s courted as a bundler for Biden’s campaign are turning their full attention to Harris and committing to work on her behalf. On Sunday afternoon, the Biden campaign filed paperwork with federal election regulators, transforming itself into the “Harris for President” committee. Lindelof was among the contributors who had called on fellow Democratic donors to stop writing campaign checks. Picture Books That See Shadows in a New Light

Which is why it’s so refreshing to find two picture books that present shadows for what they are: the non-nefarious interplay of light and dark. Ultimately, her shadow is joined in a meadow by those of two other children and a dog (the four of them now “friendly” shadows). It is in the presence of harsh light — rather than the depths of darkness — that the story turns somber. It was a thinking shadow, a shadow you could feel but not see. Feng’s soft-lined illustrations visually articulate the essence of Handy’s “stretching shadows,” easing day into night.

She was sturdy, close to my height, and in the crux of her arms was my newborn daughter, Dylan. The nurse fixed her gaze on me without so much as a glance at my wife Reggie, the doctor or my daughter, who admittedly was not a viable suspect. We stood there for a tense moment — Reggie and the doctor looking confused, the nurse looking murderous and me looking innocent to the point of looking guilty, before the nurse unswaddled the blanket covering Dylan’s legs. Then that formidable nurse, someone I had never seen before, announced she was taking Dylan away to clean her up. “On the other hand,” I rebounded with conviction, “just try scrubbing that D off of her foot.”Manning's wife, Reggie, holds their baby daughter, Dylan.

Even the highest of achievers can struggle with feelings of loneliness and unbearable sadness behind closed doors — a state that's commonly referred to as high-functioning depression. High-functioning depression isn't a clinical diagnosis, but the National Alliance on Mental Illness recognizes it as a term that can describe "anyone who is grappling with mental health issues while accomplishing their day-to-day tasks and upholding their responsibilities." Symptoms of high-functioning depression can present differently than the severe signs of major depressive disorder like diet changes, sleep disturbances, fatigue and feelings of hopelessness, says April Simpkins, mother of the late Miss USA winner Cheslie Kryst. Beethoven’s hair reveals lead poisoning

CNN —Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is one of the first songs I learned to play on the violin. While his doctor’s notes were lost to time, scientists sequenced Beethoven’s genome from locks of his hair last year. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesA new analysis of Beethoven’s hair has shown the composer experienced lead poisoning toward the end of his life. Tests revealed incredibly elevated levels of lead, as well as arsenic and mercury, in two of his locks, likely from drinking wine that was sweetened with lead. Researchers don’t believe lead poisoning would have been enough to kill him, but it could have contributed to the composer’s well-known gastrointestinal issues and deafness.

The decision upending abortion care in a critically important battleground state inspired passionate reactions from Arizonans across the political divide, ranging from elation to disgust.
