Alev Kelter helped her team win bronze in rugby sevens — the US's first Olympic medal in the sport. But that wasn't the case for Alev Kelter, an American rugby sevens player who scored on Tuesday to help Team USA win its first medal in the sport. She'd never even touched a rugby ball, but she thought ice hockey may have given her the right mentality for rugby. In 2016, just two years after picking up a rugby ball, Kelter was among the first rugby sevens players to compete in the Olympics. Here I am at an event about longevity at my local library, practicing Chado, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony for preparing matcha. Here are the eight foods I always keep in my kitchen and eat every day to live a longer and happier life. Since I was in high school, I have practiced Chado, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony for preparing green tea. For example, I'll throw kombu seaweed into miso soup with some dried mushrooms, or make a salad with seaweeds like wakame and hijiki. I use dried shiitake for overnight dashi (soup stock) with kombu seaweed, miso soup, dressings, vinegar, curry — basically everything.

London CNN —When Ed Sheeran wrote “Shape of You,” he probably didn’t have this vision of himself sculpted from sushi ingredients in mind. The British megastar is just one of several celebrities whose image has been recreated using ingredients like rice, salmon and pickled ginger by British food artist Michelle Wibowo. Wibowo puts the finishing touches to Sheeran, whose pun-y likeness is pictured alongside "Eelton" John and British TV host Alison "Salmond" Hammond. The unusual creations were on display at the CasildArt Gallery in London as part of a collaboration with Japanese food brand Yutaka to mark International Sushi Day on Tuesday. “I’m used to creating sculptures from unconventional materials, but working with sushi ingredients was a whole other kettle of fish!” Wibowo said in a press release sent to CNN by the organizers.

However, a new study finds regular use of fish oil supplements may increase, not reduce, the risk of first-time stroke and atrial fibrillation among people in good cardiovascular health. Nearly one-third of those people, who were followed for an average of 12 years, said they regularly used fish oil supplements. Over-the-counter fish oil suffers from a lack of purity and consistency, as well as the potential contaminants and heavy metals such as mercury that come with fish, Freeman said. “In addition, studies over the last 10 years have not been very positive for over-the-counter fish oil,” he added. “Fish oil was either having no benefit or in some cases it may harm, such as with stroke and AFib.

CNN —Eating a vegan, vegetarian or lacto-ovo vegetarian diet significantly reduces the overall risk of developing cancer, heart disease and dying early from cardiovascular disease, according to a new “umbrella” analysis of more than 20 years of research. “Plants have more fiber (animal foods have zero), less saturated fat and zero cholesterol (all animal foods have cholesterol),” Gardner said in an email. However, vegetarian diets limiting but not completely excluding certain types of meat and fish, such as pesco- or pollo-vegetarian diets, were excluded, he said. “Strictly vegan diets can be deficient in vitamin B12,” Gardner said. “Iron is another nutrient that is harder to get from a fully vegan diet,” Gardner added.

I was born and raised, and currently live, in a small city in California called Loma Linda. As a dietitian and nutritionist here, I think a lot about how the foods we eat can help us feel better and thrive into our old age. Here is everything I eat in a day to help promote longevity and overall well-being. Whole grains can help keep your blood sugar levels stable because they are absorbed more slowly into the body. If I opt for soft tofu, I'll cut it into cubes, drizzle it with Vietnamese Hoisin sauce, and sprinkle it with furikake, a seasoning made from nori seaweed, sesame seeds, sugar and salt.

Here are five types of foods that doctors and nutritionists eat every day for stellar brain health, heart health, longevity and overall wellness. Blueberries, in particular, are what longevity researcher, Neil Paulvin, refers to as the "holy grail" of longevity foods. They're also great for eye health, muscle recovery, brain health and strengthening your cells, he adds. All berries get their color from flavonoids which are a group of phytonutrients that have been linked to improvements in brain health and a reduction in cognitive decline. They're high in protein, fiber, antioxidants and minerals like magnesium and iron, Heller told CNBC Make It in 2022.

The Blue Zones meals were tasty and convenient but left me hungryThis is not enough lunch for me. One of the most exciting discoveries in Blue Zones research is that the ingredients linked to longevity aren't expensive , exotic, or hard to prepare, and they are satiating too. The Blue Zones Kitchen Minestrone Casserole is currently on sale at Whole Foods for $6.99, almost five times that price. Building flavor for healthy food you'll actually be excited to eat is also easier than you might think. The company has created “Chix Mix,” a new snack that is “made from most of the same ingredients” that’s in the company’s chicken feed. Instead, Chix Mix is designed as a marketing opportunity as the industry faces controversy about antibiotics in chicken feed and treatment of its animals. Chix Mix is similar: The snack contains corn, wheat puffs and edamame, but with a dash of barbecue spices “just for humans,” a release said. Chicken concernsIn 2014, Perdue removed “routine use of all human antibiotics” amid concerns that they could be putting human health at risk. Meats and fishBeef, chicken and fish are great for protein, and they can double as rich sources of choline. Beef liver is one of the highest available food sources of choline, which makes sense, as the liver is the organ that produces choline. Blackened cod is a great choice for delicious and easy fish tacos. EggsEggs are the second highest food source of choline after beef liver, providing 147 milligrams per one large egg. SoybeansIf you follow a vegetarian or plant-based diet, soybeans are a great protein source that's also high in choline.

Blister Your Vegetables

Auspiciously, we were seated right away, and we ordered a round of beers and some edamame. Overcome by the sort of silliness a spontaneous summer day affords you, our table soon descended into an all-consuming giggle pit. Between fits of laughter and played-out bits, we came up for air only to snack on the warm pods, which arrived unexpectedly blistered by a grill, rather than blanched or steamed. The pleasantly smoky exteriors yielded to beans that had retained some of those fire-kissed flavors. There’s a certain bliss to blistered vegetables.
