"Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they faced elevated prices in their day-to-day spending," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the company's conference call in late April. Paul Weaver | SOPA Images | Getty ImagesFor more than two years, consumers have dealt with sharply rising prices. But that doesn't mean the actual prices seen on grocery store shelves or restaurant menus will fall, and shoppers are feeling that pinch. While some CEOs have said that consumers are growing more cautious, others — like those in the airline industry — have celebrated strong and persistent spending. Corporate misfires can also lead to disappointing sales, even if their shoppers aren't necessarily pulling back on their spending.

Read previewElon Musk's free speech clash with Brazil's government is intensifying. On Sunday, the country's Supreme Court described his defiance of an order to take down several accounts on X as a "flagrant" obstruction. The accounts are believed to be linked to digital militias that have spread fake news and threats against Brazil's supreme court during the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro, The Associated Press reported . Brazilian Supreme Court judge, Justice Alexandre de Moraes, said Musk had launched a disinformation campaign against the Supreme Court, and that he should be investigated. When it comes to potentially aggravating China, it seems that Musk's commitment to free speech may be less absolute than he claims.

Career changes can be hard, even for Bill Gates — who credits a simple, lifelong habit for his switch from a narrow-minded, decades-long focus on computers and software to international philanthropy. "I had a long period from about age 18 to 40 where I was very monomaniacal ... Microsoft was everything," Gates, 68, recently told comedian Trevor Noah on the "What Now? "I was lucky enough that as other people took over Microsoft, I got to go and read and learn about all the health challenges, why children die." With even more time to read, he researched ongoing global health crises and decided to make the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation his primary focus, he said. "Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career and in the work that I do now with my foundation," Gates told Time in 2017.

When it was raising fresh money from investors in 2020, one slide on the pitch deck for the hedge fund Schonfeld Strategic Advisors got to the heart of the issue: "Why Schonfeld?" A hedge fund recruiterAmid the weakness, the fund has begun to prune costs. Steve Schonfeld (class of 1977) and Brad Tolkin (class of 1976) attended Roslyn High School in Roslyn Heights, New York. Tolkin told Insider in 2019 that the firm's goal was no less than becoming "the premier equities hedge fund globally." While Steven Schonfeld's 20% annual-return goals would've been ambitious for any sizable hedge fund, returns have also lagged behind peers.

Beyoncé performs onstage during the “RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR” at PGE Narodowy on June 27, 2023 in Warsaw, Poland. "One of the things of course that struck me is how enormously high prices for concerts, for gigs have become," he told CNBC Make It. "I suspect that there is an impact on inflation overall from concert prices becoming more expensive. That's not necessarily due to one particular artist," he said, adding that concert prices themselves do, however, appear to have increased. But Fed officials on Monday said the jury is very much out. Bostic said businesses in his southeastern U.S. Fed district "are telling me we think you're close to overdoing it ... Investors have consistently bet that the central bank, due to some combination of recession or a faster-than-expected drop in inflation, will be cutting rates by later this year. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said the central bank probably has "more work to do on our end, to try to bring inflation back down." In addition, he says the full impact of Fed rate hikes has yet to be felt.
REUTERS/Cindy LiuPHNOM PENH, March 3 (Reuters) - Prominent Cambodian opposition figure Kem Sokha was sentenced on Friday to 27 years of house arrest after being found guilty of treason, in a case condemned by the United States as politically motivated. Judge Koy Sao also told the court in the capital, Phnom Penh, that Kem Sokha would be barred from running for political office or voting in elections. Kem Sokha, who headed the now-disbanded Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), had denied the charges and Washington dismissed the allegations as "fabricated conspiracy theories". Many media outlets critical of Hun Sen have also been shuttered and civil dissent crushed in recent years. Human Rights Watch said the case against Kem Sokha was a "politically motivated ploy" by Hun Sen to sideline the opposition and stamp out democracy.

"In a five- to 10-year timeframe, quantum computing will break encryption as we know it." Since its conceptual birth in the early 1980s, quantum computing has held promise for systems that could exponentially outperform today's computers. Rather than leaning on the zeroes and ones of classical computers, quantum computers emerged from quantum physics, which is the study of the fundamental building blocks of matter and energy. Those strange properties account for the technology's potentially explosive abilities; each additional qubit doubles a quantum computer's power. They are named D-Wave Systems , Rigetti Computing, IonQ , and Quantum Computing.
