The flight attendant took action by improving her diet and taking her little dog for long walks. She lost 80 pounds in less than a year and is able to keep up with her energetic, 6-year-old child. I did it by changing my diet and walking my dog more. I only put on 20 pounds during my first pregnancy with my son, Andy, in 2000 and lost it pretty quickly. I no longer took the elevator in the New York subway and went for the stairs.

CNN —Bela Karolyi, the legendary and controversial Romanian American gymnastics coach who helped lead Mary Lou Retton, Nadia Comaneci and Kerri Strug to Olympic gold, has died, USA Gymnastics announced. Still, Bela Karolyi remained unapologetic to the end for the methods he used to blaze a path to sports glory. And by his senior year, he was coaching the school’s women’s gymnastics team, whose star Marta Enoss would become his wife and professional ally. “I think he was learning gymnastics with us.”At age 14, Comaneci famously scored the first “perfect 10” in Olympic gymnastics. “Prior to entering the Bela Karolyi camp, I knew one thing; Bela was my bus pass to the Olympics,” Okino wrote in 2001.

Anthropic has been gaining on arch rival OpenAI in recent months, according to data from a popular developer tool offered by startup Vercel. In the week of August 18, the OpenAI code library was downloaded almost 229,000 times by developers. Data from Vercel's AI SDK toolkit VercelA top executive at Vercel attributed the recent adoption trends partly to a new AI model that Anthropic released in the summer. That's because many AI model providers have adopted OpenAI's API specification as a de facto standard. And that massive total doesn't include fundraising by the main pro-Trump super PAC, MAGA Inc., which will file its fundraising reports by Sunday. Adelson gave $95 million to Preserve America, a super PAC she’s almost entirely funded, during the third fundraising quarter, after previously giving the group $5 million in the prior quarter. Right for America, another pro-Trump group, raised $28 million last quarter — with multimillion-dollar checks from Andreesen, Horowitz and Perlmutter as well as Perlmutter's wife, Lara. The super PAC has spent heavily on the presidential race as well as on the Wisconsin Senate and Maine 2nd Congressional District campaigns. Harris has plenty of super PAC backup, too: Future Forward (known as FF PAC) had raised $200 million through August, while MAGA Inc. had raised $280 million.

A Texas judge said she will not drop her lawsuit against a state commission that publicly sanctioned her for refusing to officiate at same-sex weddings, even though the commission withdrew its ethics warning last month. The lawsuit seeks an order barring future sanctions, but does not ask the court to overturn the public warning. The Texas Supreme Court in June revived Hensley’s lawsuit. A lawyer for the judicial commission, Douglas Lang, on Monday said it was opposed to the continuation of Hensley’s lawsuit. A lawyer for the commission has said Hensley’s lawsuit is seeking a “license to discriminate.”

In this 2004 photo, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris waits for a proceeding to convene in San Francisco. The long-standing problem of racial inequities in the criminal justice system is among the issues that prompted Harris to become a prosecutor in the first place. “I grew up knowing about the disparities, inequities, and unfairness in the criminal justice system,” Harris said during a 2019 town hall hosted by MSNBC. And I am proud of the work that I did.”As a prosecutor, Harris adopted what she called a “smart on crime” approach to law enforcement. Her cautious stance on the issue frustrated many advocates of criminal justice reform, including those who expressed support for Harris on other issues.

Wealthy millennials and Gen Z are redefining philanthropy

Wealthy millennials and Gen Zers are redefining the world of charitable giving, seeing themselves more as activists than donors, according to a new study. Older donors give from of a sense of responsibility. Those over the age of 44 were more than twice as likely to give due to "obligation" than younger donors. Those under 43 were more likely to cite self-education and the influence of their social circle as drivers of their philanthropy. The younger wealthy are still building their fortunes and inheriting their wealth, so they're more likely to give their time and help fundraise.

In addition to this, our teams are joining the local taskforces to try to restore the most basic services and bring further supplies to Spruce Pine,” The Quartz Corp said in a statement. The Quartz Corp facility near Spruce Pine, North Carolina, is seen during a CNN flyover of the area on Monday, September 30. And while quartz is abundant around the world, the kind of ultra-high-purity quartz mined in Spruce Pine is not. The Spruce Pine mines provide an estimated 80% to 90% of the world’s high-purity quartz — experts say the exact amount is proprietary and unknown — supplying semiconductor manufacturers like chipmaking giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. However, Wang said that despite the scale of the devastation in Spruce Pine, there is still reason for optimism.

Trump's arguments for overturning his $454M civil fraud verdict received a warm reception Thursday. Trump attorney D. John Sauer has made this line drawing a central point of his appeal. The appeal argues that James' fraud case wrongly interfered in the decisions of "sophisticated" banks that had been happy to loan Trump money regardless of any exaggerations. Deutsche Bank relied on Trump's financial statements in loaning him $400 million to develop his Chicago skyscraper, his Washington, DC hotel, and his Miami golf resort. CNN —Four top operatives on Republican Mark Robinson’s campaign for North Carolina governor have stepped down, the campaign announced on Sunday, days after a CNN report uncovered inflammatory comments he made on a porn website. Robinson has a long history of making inflammatory statements but the newly unearthed message board posts go a step beyond. In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Robinson repeatedly denied that he made the comments on Nude Africa. Since the CNN report, some North Carolina Republicans have moved to pressure Robinson to drop out – though the state deadline for him to officially withdraw as a candidate has passed. The post-evangelical movement predates former President Donald Trump’s political rise, but has been accelerated by his alliance with White conservative evangelical leaders. White evangelicals have been a key part of the Republican coalition since the 1980s. The exit polls estimated that 26% of 2016 voters and 28% of 2020 voters were White evangelicals. Artificial intelligence offers significant benefits for seniors, from the ability to curb loneliness to making it easier for them to get to medical appointments. Less discussed, however, is a parallel crisis in corporate America: a wave of aging business leaders who refuse to step aside. The average retirement age is similarly increasing: to 62 in 2024 from 57 in 1991. Using public data from 1992 to 2018, they assessed the relationship between a CEO's age and their "managerial ability," as measured by how they turned company resources into revenue and profit. "A 10% increase in CEO age is associated with a 1.9% decrease in managerial ability," they wrote. And older workers, both above and below the traditional retirement age, already face unwarranted discrimination in the workplace.

The Kamala Harris Vibe Shift

Dianne Schwartz, an 80-year-old Chicagoan who listens to political podcasts while she exercises, felt something today. “I realized today, while I was listening to my podcasts, that I spent the last few days without worrying and being depressed,” Schwartz told me. But since President Biden bowed out of his tepid re-election campaign on Sunday, and his party instantaneously coalesced behind Vice President Kamala Harris, Schwartz has found herself feeling strangely, impossibly good about politics. “I haven’t been this excited about an election,” Schwartz said, “since Kennedy.”Call it the Kamala Harris vibe shift. A presidential race that felt to many Democrats like a dispiriting slog toward an all-but-certain defeat by Trump suddenly feels lighter.

Whether or not Joe Biden persists in his run for president, America’s gerontocratic crisis will keep on worsening. Gerontocracy transcends government as a full-scale social phenomenon, in which older people accumulate power of different kinds, and then retain it. This form of power is both old and new. The term “gerontocracy” was popularized a century ago by the Scottish anthropologist J.G. Frazer to refer to a very early form of government, in which power reposed in councils of elders.

CNN —Louisiana public schools are now required to display the Ten Commandments in all classrooms, after Republican Gov. Before signing the bill, Landry called it “one of (his) favorites.”“If you want to respect the rule of law, you gotta start from the original law given which was Moses. Politicians have no business imposing their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools,” the groups said in a joint statement. The Supreme Court ruled that the coach’s prayers amounted to private speech, protected by the First Amendment, and could not be restricted by the school district. At the time, the court clarified that a government entity does not necessarily violate the establishment clause by permitting religious expression in public.
