☆ New study by leading trauma psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk shows therapy-assisted MDMA could help treat PTSD

In his best-selling book "The Body Keeps the Score," psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk explores the effects of EMDR, yoga, and limbic system therapy on treating patients suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. In a recent study, van der Kolk and his co-authors found a new way of potentially helping patients heal: therapy-assisted MDMA. "A very core issue in treating trauma, namely, is people tend to blame themselves, hate themselves, put themselves down, feel like they're permanently broken," van der Kolk says. Participants who took MDMA seemed to gain a different viewpoint of their trauma, the study found. The results are something van der Kolk says he "had never expected we would be able to see."

From 2007 through 2021, suicide rates for Americans ages 10 to 24 rose 62%, according to the CDC. Young people don't think they can make 'a significant difference'Financial instability has proven to be a large contributing factor in youth suicide. In 2014 and 2015, suicide rates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology surpassed the national average, which was about 13 deaths per year, according to CDC data. Easier access to guns is linked to increased suicide rates, as well, as gun suicides reached an all-time high in 2022, according to CDC data.

Bessel van der Kolk didn't think his book "The Body Keeps the Score" would be such a mainstream success. Van der Kolk is a psychiatrist and researcher who has worked with trauma survivors for more than 30 years. "There is no precedent for this type of book so, no, we didn't know it would be this popular," van der Kolk tells CNBC Make It. "What traumatized people suffer from is that people don't believe them or people minimize it or say, 'it didn't really happen,'" van der Kolk says. Fisher, who has worked with van der Kolk, emphasizes that "The Body Keeps the Score" remains relevant because of its content but also because of how it is written.

☆ New Zealand court sentences Megaupload coders to prison, Herald reports

SYDNEY, June 15 (Reuters) - Two coders at the file-sharing website Megaupload were sentenced to prison by a New Zealand court on Thursday after pleading guilty in a deal in which they promised to testify against the site's founder Kim Dotcom, according to the New Zealand Herald. Mathias Ortmann was sentenced to two years and seven months in prison and Bram van der Kolk to two years and six months by the High Court in Auckland, the newspaper reported on its website. German-born Dotcom, who has a New Zealand residency, is fighting extradition to the United States relating to his Megaupload site, which was shut down in 2012 following an FBI-ordered raid on his Auckland mansion. The sentences for Ortmann and van der Kolk were significantly lowered from 10 years as the court gave substantial discounts for the guilty pleas, assistance to the FBI and rehabilitation efforts, the NZ Herald said. U.S. authorities say Dotcom, Ortmann, van der Kolk and a fourth Megaupload executive who has since died had cost film studios and record companies more than $500 million and generated more than $175 million by encouraging paying users to store and share copyrighted material.
