"We know lots of people are importing their old posts, and we're excited about that," Liu says. To be honest, I've found it a bit weird to see my old tweets in my new home. To fix that — and to minimize the potential for tampering with old tweets — Bluesky is planning to label posts that are moved over from other platforms. "We're about to ship an update to show old posts that are imported with an archival tag," Liu says. Once I've got all my old tweets unpacked on Bluesky, I'm going to head back over to X and torch my entire archive.

Read previewFor decades, Detroit was an international symbol of urban decay: abandoned neighborhoods, decrepit former factories, and a population exodus. From July 2022 to July 2023, the US Census Bureau says Detroit's population grew by close to 2,000 residents, bumping the city's population to 633,218. AdvertisementWith Detroit's latest population numbers, the city also jumped from the 29th-largest to the 26th-largest city in the United States, overtaking Memphis, Louisville, and Portland. Detroit's numbers are still far from 1950, when the city's population peaked at about 1.85 million. Back then, it was the fifth-largest city in the United States, behind only New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

Starting Monday, fast-food workers in California at chains with more than 60 national locations earn $20 an hour, higher than the state's broader minimum wage of $16 per hour. California pay is already highwatch nowWhile the new fast-food minimum wage is among the highest in the U.S., California employers are used to paying more for their labor. Even when it is not mandated, restaurants usually find themselves paying more than the minimum wage to attract hourly workers. As a full-service restaurant chain, the company won't be obligated to pay its California workers $20 an hour. Advocates prepare to go biggerFrom start to finish, the California law, which was backed by the Service Employees International Union, has been controversial.

Forty-eight hours later, it seems Lyft's earnings mistake has reached meme level in business circles. My immediate thought was probably the same as most people when I heard the news: oof, that's a really, really bad mistake. In fact, in my Visa days, my wife and twin toddlers would decamp to grandma's house for two weeks because we knew I'd be fully consumed with the earnings process. While their intentions are almost always positive, it's essential to avoid team bloat in the earnings process. By prioritizing a meticulous approach to the process, companies can transform earnings season from a high-risk ordeal into a showcase of reliability and precision.

Here's the state of play globally for crypto regulation and enforcement in 2023 — and a look at what to expect in 2024. "However, much of their work has involved providing guidance to the industry through enforcement actions," continued Levin. Crypto market participants nevertheless hope that the spate of legal challenges brought to crypto companies in 2023 will bring clarity in the form of new regulations. The U.S.'s dominant role in global finance and its focus on consumer protection plays a crucial role in its leading position in crypto regulation enforcement. The region has been increasingly warming to crypto assets, despite a broader anti-crypto push from China, which banned bitcoin trading and mining in 2021.

New York CNN —At least a dozen major brands have halted ad spending on X, formerly Twitter, since its latest advertiser exodus began last week over concerns about antisemitism and hate speech on Elon Musk’s social media platform. The ongoing exit of advertisers marks a deepening crisis for X, which was already struggling to woo brands back to the platform following Musk’s takeover last year. IBM’s decision also came after Musk had publicly endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory in a post on X earlier in the week. X also said it had made the pro-Nazi accounts identified by Media Matters ineligible for monetization, meaning ads can no longer be run on their pages. (Media Matters has vowed to fight the lawsuit from X and says it stands by its reporting.)

Many of us (myself included) raise an eyebrow at Burning Man. Burning Man would feel much less annoying if the festival just said, yeah, we’re a bunch of idiots who want to party in Mad Max costumes. The Burning Man organizers wrote in a statement: “Burning Man is a community of people who are prepared to support one another. One hopes that events like the flooding at Burning Man will be galvanizing, both for those who experienced it and those who watched in horror from afar. "At the strategic level it is pretty clear that you have a significant amount of friction and confusion," General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a small group of reporters traveling with him in Asia. Milley said that lower-level Russian troops in Ukraine were likely more focused on the situation on the ground and surviving day to day. Since the mutiny, which posed the biggest domestic challenge to the Russian state in decades, President Vladimir Putin has so far kept Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov in their jobs. In the latest surprise, the Kremlin said this week that Putin met Prigozhin and his commanders just five days after the mutiny. Lukashenko first announced Prigozhin was in Belarus, then said last week that he was back in Russia.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro leaves his home following a search operation, in Brasilia, Brazil May 3, 2023. Far-right former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was barred Friday from running for office again until 2030 after a panel of judges concluded that he abused his power and cast unfounded doubts on the country's electronic voting system. Five judges on the nation's highest electoral court agreed that Bolsonaro used government communication channels to promote his campaign and sowed distrust about the vote. Speaking to reporters in Minas Gerais, Bolsonaro lamented that the trial was unfair and politically motivated. Brazilian law forbids candidates with criminal sentences from running for office.

OTTAWA, May 13 (Reuters) - Canada's main oil-producing province of Alberta faces another hot and dry weekend, with warnings of more intense wildfires after blazes forced thousands to evacuate homes and temporarily shuttered energy production. Residents forced to evacuate early this month say they are frustrated with the indefinite displacement. "We are expecting hot and dry conditions in most of the province, which will make the wildfire danger climb," Alberta Wildfire official Josee St-Onge told a briefing on Friday. Recent cooling and rain helped firefighters tackle some blazes and restored most of the energy production, but expectations of rising weekend temperatures have fanned worries. On Friday, the town of Drayton Valley told residents in a Facebook post that they should expect to be out of their homes "at least another week."

Work-From-Home Era Ends for Millions of Americans

Several big companies have said they want their workers to report in person—and more often. Working remotely is becoming increasingly rare a few years after the pandemic caused millions of Americans to decamp from worksites to their basements and bedrooms. Some 72.5% of business establishments said their employees teleworked rarely or not at all last year, according to a Labor Department report released this week. The survey showed about 21 million more workers on-site full time in 2022, compared with the prior year. An establishment is defined as each business location—such as an individual restaurant in a chain.
A famous New York Pizza shop is upping the price of its $1 pizza slices by 50% due to inflation. 2 Bros Pizza said the increasing price of cheese is making up over 40% of the company's food costs. 2 Bros Pizza, a New York restaurant chain, is increasing the price of its pizza slices at its East Village location – an area in lower Manhattan, local news site EV Grieve first reported. Alongside $1 pizza slices, dollar store chains like Dollar Tree and grocery store chains like Trader Joe's are making products pricier by the year. 2 Bros Pizza did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about the price increase.
