15 LSU its second consecutive double-digit loss Saturday night, effectively knocking the Tigers out of the College Football Playoff race with a 42-13 blowout in Baton Rouge. When Milroe plays how he did on Saturday — confident, decisive, efficient — Alabama is incredibly hard to defend. — Kennington Smith IIISEC race remains jumbledThe simplest immediate consequence of Saturday night’s blowout in Death Valley is that LSU’s SEC championship hopes have taken a major hit with the Tigers’ second SEC loss, while Alabama’s aspirations remain alive. AdvertisementBut it’s also easy to see a scenario where six teams tie for second with two SEC losses: LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee and the loser of Texas/Texas A&M. Back in September, South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers ran for 88 yards and two scores in a game LSU was lucky to escape unscathed.

A few possessions later, Tennessee sealed the win with a Will Brooks interception of Jalen Milroe with 1:24 to play. Though the Tide won last year in Tuscaloosa, Saturday marked Tennessee’s second consecutive win against Alabama at Neyland Stadium, something that hadn’t happened since 2004 and 2006. The Vols jumped to 56 percent after the win, and the Tide fell to 53 percent, according to The Athletic’s Austin Mock. A loss to Tennessee coupled with the loss to Vanderbilt and a lackluster win against South Carolina puts Alabama in a simple but challenging position: win out or bust. Four Tennessee drives reached Alabama territory in the first half Saturday, but the Volunteers failed to score on any of them.

More specifically to Alabama, the chaotic last few weeks beg this question: What’s the bigger issue — coaching or player execution? The final minute of the first half against South Carolina shows plenty of room for both sides to take accountability. AdvertisementMomentum was slipping away after a South Carolina touchdown and safety cut a comfortable 14-0 Crimson Tide lead to 14-9. This week’s Alabama film study dives into the highs and lows against South Carolina and weighs the impact of coaching decisions versus player execution. Against South Carolina, it blitzed 26.8 percent of the time, contributing to a 48.8 percent pressure rate on dropbacks.

It marked the Commodores’ first-ever win over an AP top-five team and just the fourth time Alabama has lost as a No. — Joe RexrodeAlabama isn’t in as much CFP trouble as it may seemThe CFP margin for error has shrunk, of course, for an Alabama team that still has challenging road games against Tennessee, LSU and Oklahoma ahead. Despite a near-even margin in total yards (Vanderbilt 186, Alabama 159), the Commodores controlled the game by converting third downs — 7-of-10 in the first half. Williams’ magic isn’t enoughWhen Alabama needed a big play it called on its 17-year-old phenom Ryan Williams — and he delivered. Then, faced with a fourth-and-goal and trailing 40-28, Williams’ 2-yard touchdown run put Alabama back within one possession.

2 Georgia to fourth-ranked Alabama might have acted as a de facto knockout game. The College Football Playoff’s expansion to 12 teams this season has left more margin for error for teams with national title ambitions that play in the sport’s four most powerful conferences. But that doesn’t mean the stakes are necessarily lower for Saturday’s meeting of undefeated Southeastern Conference rivals (7:30 p.m. But Georgia also has imperfections, such as its 74th-ranked third-down conversion rate, its 81st-ranked third-down defense and its numerous penalties. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe didn’t throw an incompletion until there were just under four minutes left in the second quarter. To this point it’s been Georgia, Texas, Ohio State and everyone else. Backs against the wall, Alabama turned to Milroe and Ryan Williams, whose immediate answer will go down as a legendary moment. It ended with a Beck interception, and turnovers were part of the reason Georgia had to put together an epic comeback. That list consists of Alabama, Texas and Tennessee.

Georgia is favored over Alabama for the fourth straight time Saturday, but another loss would be three losses in those four games. A loss would turn the conversation from “Kirby Smart had a Nick Saban problem” to “Georgia has an Alabama problem.”Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. It certainly was in last year’s SEC Championship Game and likely will be again this weekend. But an Alabama win would elevate his status early in his tenure, so in that regard, there’s a lot to gain. Win or lose, both Georgia and Alabama will come away with things they need to work on.

By the end of this weekend, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the latest film from Disney’s recently beleaguered Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, will likely have surpassed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. This success would seem to be a win for audiences that want both big franchise movies and adult content. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is certainly not for kids. At its core, this new made-for-adults film is still just another big-budget franchise movie based on empty nostalgia and catering to childishness, if not children. (Or, perhaps, the same tastes that your child currently has, given the size of the adult “Bluey” audience.)

All those late coaching moves added some intrigue to the first Wednesday of February, a day that once highlighted the recruiting calendar but has been anti-climactic ever since the 2017 launch of a December signing period. New coaches had to re-recruit prospects who had signed to play for a different staff and now were free to look elsewhere. So did Brent Brennan, who left San Jose State to take over for Fisch at Arizona. Washington refortified its class by adding about several players who originally had signed to play for Fisch at Arizona. Alabama also lost cornerback Jameer Grimsley, who signed with the Tide in December but will now play at Florida instead.

When Jim Harbaugh took a pay cut from Michigan after the 2020 season, getting another chance to be an NFL head coach seemed like a long shot for him. If Nick Saban had retired after the 2022 season it’s doubtful Kalen DeBoer would have been his replacement at Alabama. He leaves Michigan after three straight seasons of beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten and reaching the playoff. Harbaugh has been a head coach in college and the NFL for 20 years, including a three-year stint with FCS San Diego before landing the Stanford job in 2007. “I knew this was a thing that, not that I had to do, but that I really wanted to do.

Washington has targeted Arizona's Jedd Fisch and is negotiating a deal with him to succeed Kalen DeBoer as the next coach of the Huskies, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Arizona and Fisch were not making any public announcements yet. Less than a week after playing for the national championship, the Huskies moved quickly to fill the vacancy created when DeBoer left for Alabama. Arizona is moving to the Big 12 starting next season but is facing financial issues within its athletic department, and Fisch could see more stability at Washington. Fisch, 47, would be the fourth head coach at Washington since the 2019 season.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Kalen DeBoer stood at a lectern, only a few feet from Nick Saban, and enthusiastically embraced the chance to both replace and learn from his larger-than-life predecessor. All that makes it easier to be the guy who replaces the guy who brought six national championships to Tuscaloosa in 17 years. A huge photo of Saban and players hoisting a national championship trophy hung on the wall behind DeBoer as he talked to reporters. DeBoer spoke with Saban on the phone Friday morning and called him again the next morning.
