Certain toilet paper, tissue and office paper brands are made with materials from eucalyptus trees, a non-native species to Portugal. CNN PortugalThe problem is eucalyptus trees are particularly flammable. The eucalyptus tree is native to Australia and provides food and shelter to koalas, among other wildlife. As the Portuguese paper and timber industries grew in the mid-1900s, so too did eucalyptus plantations, and the species now covers nearly 2 million acres. In California, the eucalyptus tree has been naturalized, meaning it now grows beyond the places it was planted.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —Coco Gauff looked to be cruising against Donna Vekić in her third-round singles match at the Paris Olympics. The most fraught moment of the match came midway through the second set when Gauff was reduced to tears during a heated exchange with chair umpire Jaume Campistol. A line call on Gauff’s baseline was initially deemed out, but Campistol overruled the decision and handed Vekić a crucial break point. The supervisor also came onto the court and the ensuing debate lasted five minutes, with Gauff wiping tears away from her eyes. The ball was flying a little bit, but after that, I got in rhythm and it was pretty good.”The dispute with the umpire in the second set, Gauff later explained, didn’t alter the result of the match.

PARIS — The top American tennis player Coco Gauff is out of the Olympic women’s singles under controversial circumstances after a 6-7, 2-6 defeat to Croatia’s Donna Vekic on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros. Afterward, Gauff, who was the flagbearer for Team USA alongside LeBron James, said that she “felt that they called it before I hit. Play continued with Gauff down a break and she fought back in the next Vekic service game, but Vekic saved multiple break points, and ultimately cruised to an impressive victory by breaking Gauff again in the final game. Down 5-3 in the first set, Vekic broke Gauff at love to turn the match around. “I can’t say I would have won the match if I would have won that point.

This meant he judged the ball from Vekic to be in, and chair umpire Jaume Campistol awarded her the point because Gauff’s follow-up shot had gone into the net. Regarding the overruling of line calls, Case 7 is as follows:“If a chair umpire or line umpire calls ‘Out’ and then corrects the call to good, what is the correct decision? “Decision: The chair umpire must decide if the original ‘Out’ call was a hindrance to either player. Video line calls happen throughout top-level tennis. After the match, Vekic said, “It’s a very tricky situation.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —There is a notable absence among Novak Djokovic’s 98 career singles titles, but the Serbian star is hoping to change that over the coming weeks. In the end, Djokovic progressed with ease, potentially setting up a thrilling second-round match against Rafael Nadal. It’s a feat, sometimes described as a career golden slam, only achieved by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams in the women’s game. “Playing in the Olympic Games is very rare for us tennis players,” Djokovic told reporters, ”and of course for anybody, as it comes every four years. For now, it is not clear who holds the title of oldest dog ever. “We’re not yet in a position to confirm a new holder for the record, although we certainly hope that the publicity around the record title encourages pet owners from around the world to get in touch,” said McKinley. Meanwhile, failed uprisings in Bahrain and eastern Saudi Arabia were followed by years-long crackdowns and a continuing civil war in Syria. “What we’re beginning to see in Saudi Arabia right now is the emergence of a new social contract. Saudi Arabia is the world’s biggest exporter of crude oil, and nearly two-thirds of its income still comes from selling fossil fuels. If Saudi Arabia can become a hub for major sporting events, then that’s a way of attracting interest to the country,” said Maguire. In response to previous criticism about Saudi Arabia’s purported “sportswashing,” the kingdom’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal said: “People that don’t know Saudi Arabia, have never been to Saudi Arabia, go out and talk about it as if they’ve lived there for 30 years, 40 years.

Lisbon, Portugal Reuters —Portugal’s famed street artist, Bordalo II, has broken into a Lisbon venue where Pope Francis will celebrate a mass next week and rolled out a huge carpet of oversized banknotes to criticize how much the state has spent on the event. Artur Bordalo, who goes by the name Bordalo II, poses at his studio in Lisbon, Portugal. Patricia De Melo Moreira/AFP/Getty imagesOfficial estimates in January showed the event would cost 161 million euros ($177 million), to be paid by the government, the Catholic Church, the city council of Lisbon and nearby Loures. Earlier this year, heavy criticism forced the Lisbon city council to cut planned spending on an altar for Francis to celebrate a mass to 2.9 million euros ($3.2 million) from over 5 million euros ($5.5 million). Asked about Bordalo II’s carpet, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas told reporters the artist used his voice to express his concerns and that such protests were normal for these events.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro leaves his home following a search operation, in Brasilia, Brazil May 3, 2023. Far-right former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was barred Friday from running for office again until 2030 after a panel of judges concluded that he abused his power and cast unfounded doubts on the country's electronic voting system. Five judges on the nation's highest electoral court agreed that Bolsonaro used government communication channels to promote his campaign and sowed distrust about the vote. Speaking to reporters in Minas Gerais, Bolsonaro lamented that the trial was unfair and politically motivated. Brazilian law forbids candidates with criminal sentences from running for office.

COLOMBO, June 23 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka is set to start bartering tea to Iran next month in lieu of $250 million owed for oil, a Sri Lankan official told Reuters on Friday, as the crisis-hit country tries to lift sales to a key market and protect its forex reserves. "This is very timely for us because we get access to an important market and both Iran and Sri Lanka can trade without relying on dollars," Sri Lanka's Tea Board Chairman Niraj de Mel told Reuters. "The agreement was to send $5 million worth of tea each month for 48 months but we plan to start with about $2 million per month." Globally popular Ceylon Tea is Sri Lanka's highest foreign exchange-earning crop, brewing $1.25 billion for the cash-strapped country last year, according to government data. Iran has been one of Sri Lanka's main tea buyers but exports have fallen steadily from $128 million in 2018 to $70 million last year as U.S. sanctions on Iran hit trade.

Resolving Credit Suisse: an alternative history

Reuters GraphicsThe market shock will be all the more extreme because Credit Suisse doesn’t obviously need more capital. It seems perverse to put taxpayer money on the line while leaving the Credit Suisse bonds untouched. Of the 30 global lenders classed as systemically important by the Financial Stability Board, Credit Suisse is the third-smallest by total assets. It also enables the Swiss National Bank to offer Credit Suisse an open-ended credit line, hopefully ending the bank run. Credit Suisse is suffering from a crisis of confidence brought on by years of mismanagement, rather than a system-wide meltdown.
Norway’s Karen Espelund was “appointed” not “elected” to the position due to her role as chair of the Women’s Football Committee, UEFA told CNN Sport over email. Norwegian Football Association President Lise Klaveness told CNN that the popularity of soccer isn't mirrored in female representation at UEFA. We tend to forget that because we compare it to the phenomenon of men’s football,” Klaveness says. The prize money for this year’s women’s World Cup, which kicks off on July 20, will increase by 300% to $150 million, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced last month. “They don’t really know: What are the differences between men’s and women’s football?

The Atlas Lions made history as the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal. They made history as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. It was Morocco's first World Cup win since 1998 — and its third-ever at the tournament. Less spoken about is that they also rate better on television than the men do in the World Cup. We’ll just have to wait and see, though with the US, Canada and Mexico hosting the 2026 World Cup, soccer isn’t going away anytime soon.
