BERLIN, Oct 6 (Reuters) - The $2.9 billion battery parts joint venture between Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) PowerCo and Belgian materials firm Umicore will be called Ionway, the companies said on Friday. Through the joint venture, first flagged in December 2021, the companies are joining a number of European automakers that have brought battery supplies closer to home in the shift towards electric vehicles. "The founding of Ionway sends a strong signal for the rollout of battery cell technology in Europe. We are convinced that this company will provide some important building blocks with which the European Union can implement its Green Deal goals," said Ionway Chief Executive Thomas Jansseune. Ionway is intended to supply PowerCo's European battery cell factories with key battery materials and cover a large portion of PowerCo's needs in the European Union.

WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said on Tuesday that 52 million air bag inflators produced by auto suppliers ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive need to be recalled because they may rupture and send dangerous metal fragments flying. GM in May agreed to recall nearly 1 million vehicles with ARC air bag inflators after a rupture in March resulted in facial injuries to a driver. Delphi Automotive, acquired by Autoliv (ALV.N), manufactured approximately 11 million of the inflators through 2004 under a licensing agreement with ARC, which manufactured the remaining 41 million inflators. NHTSA has been scrutinizing air bag inflator ruptures for more than 15 years. Over the last decade, more than 67 million Takata air bag inflators have been recalled in the United States and more than 100 million worldwide, the biggest auto safety callback on record.

LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - Thames Water has become the poster child for a British water industry under fire for its poor environmental record and financial mismanagement. After a period as a listed company, Thames Water was acquired by German utility RWE (RWEG.DE) in 2001. Thames Water said on Monday they would provide 750 million pounds, and added it had strong liquidity of 4.4 billion pounds. June 21 - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) on Wednesday introduced a new computing service aimed at helping chemical companies speed up the research and development of new materials. Azure Quantum Elements, as the service is called, relies on computing power to help chemical companies simulate huge numbers of possible combinations of atoms. In a press release, Microsoft said that the system has helped some early customers speed up their development processes by as much as six months. Microsoft said that BASF (BASFn.DE), AkzoNobel (AKZO.AS), AspenTech, Johnson Matthey (JMAT.L), SCGC and 1910 Genetics have been testing the system. Microsoft said it was also publishing a scientific paper on the milestone but gave few other details ahead of its announcement.
