This is something I've been looking forward to as I prepare to run my first marathon on November 3. So I consulted Jena Brown, a sports dietitian specializing in endurance racing, who reviewed my plan for the week and suggested improvements. She told me I should aim for roughly 8-12 grams of carbs a day per kilogram of my body weight. After my shorter runs this week, I got a berry smoothie with 55g carbs and 27g protein (from protein powder). Cut down on fiber, fat, and spiceI used regular, refined flour pasta and blended pesto with cottage cheese to make the sauce.

I took my kids to a family-centric, all-inclusive resort in Mexico this summer. My kids had fun, but I was the one who needed to be taken care of, and I loved it. There was only one option that made sense: An all-inclusive resort. The magic of an all-inclusive resort is that when your kids don't eat their steak or their $20 chicken nuggets, it doesn't make you want to cry inside. While I can't live at an all-inclusive resort or afford to hire a personal butler to take care of my needs 24/7, I am worth investing in.

After graduating from college, I moved back to the city and felt like a stranger in my hometown. But my hometown is New York City, and after graduating, it didn't feel much like home. Living upstate was a breath of fresh airI decided to enroll at SUNY New Paltz in upstate New York. For someone who spent their whole life having to take an elevator ride down 33 floors to go outside, living upstate felt like real freedom. That is what makes me a New Yorker; that is what makes New York City my hometown.

During a job interview I was asked what the company needed to do to keep me. I played back in my head all the times that I was told to stay closeted so as to not be judged. Two weeks after a painful breakup, being assigned a new project offered a much-needed boost. After a few initial meetings, my editor mentioned another reporter whose beat overlapped with our mission would be joining the team. The door opened, and he walked into the meeting with his laptop and notebook — and his head down. Every time I overheard his voice when I was trying to focus on my work, my heart broke piece by piece. I confessed I was going through a break-up — stopping short of pointing my ex out to her as he walked by the meeting room.

Saifeddin Abutaha, an aid worker for World Central Kitchen, was on his way home to see his mother when an Israeli missile struck the car he was driving in a humanitarian convoy last week. Mr. Abutaha, 25, doted on his parents, and he texted them frequently while out delivering aid across the Gaza Strip, which is on the brink of famine after six months of war. In his final hours, he had pivoted between delivering food and making family Ramadan plans, his brother, Abdul Raziq Abutaha, said in an interview. 1, their mother, Inshirah — who once daydreamed of seeing Saifeddin get married — has been unable to accept that he is gone. “She still has not eaten anything since he died,” said Abdul Raziq, 33.

Bianca was in the harbor of Riomaggiore, the southernmost of the five picturesque fishing villages that make up the Italian Cinque Terre region. “Then, three days before I was leaving to go home, my friend said, ‘Let’s go to the Cinque Terre. After three days with Alessandro, Bianca didn’t want to leave, but she figured she had no choice. She fed me, of course.”Alessandro also took Bianca on the back of his scooter for hilltop rides around the Cinque Terre. The couple would take their daughter along too, and spend time with their Italian family.

Lea Iodice was thrilled to hear that the Peace Corps had accepted her application and was sending her to Senegal as a community health care worker. She shared the good news with her roommates, her family and her favorite professor and daydreamed about her last day at her job, managing a gym called SnapFitness. She was crushed, about a month later, to receive a letter from the Peace Corps Office of Medical Services saying that her offer was being rescinded because she was in treatment for anxiety. “The reason for medical nonclearance is that you are currently diagnosed with an unspecified anxiety disorder,” read the letter, which appeared in her online application portal. For years, comparing notes under anonymous screen names, Peace Corps applicants have shared stories about being disqualified because of mental health history, including common disorders like depression and anxiety.
