Over the summer, Florida’s Broward County Public Schools made the decision to ban students from using cellphones and other communication devices for the entire school day. It's a particularly sensitive topic in Broward County after the 2018 Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which is in the district. Carline Dumoulin, a mother of two students at Broward’s Cypress Bay High School, is one of those signatories. Broward County school board member Debra Hixon was present at the meeting where the rule was approved, but had left before the vote. Last year, a video of several students fighting at West Broward High School circulated online, gaining thousands of views on X.

Trump writes in her memoir that tech leaders disappointed her during her anti-bullying campaign. PARIS — Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France for online harassment after a rain of criticism and false claims about her sex during the Paris Olympics, her lawyer said Sunday. The complaint was filed Friday with a special unit in the Paris prosecutor’s office for combating online hate speech, alleging “aggravated cyber-harassment” targeting Khelif, lawyer Nabil Boudi said. In a statement, he described it as a “misogynist, racist and sexist campaign” against the boxer. As is common in French law, the complaint doesn’t name an alleged perpetrator but leaves it to investigators to determine who could be at fault. False claims that Khelif was transgender or a man erupted online, and the International Olympic Committee defended her and denounced those peddling misinformation.

MyKayla Skinner posted a video to Instagram on Tuesday calling on Simone Biles to stop her 11.8 million followers from “cyberbullying” her after Biles appeared to clapback at comments by Skinner. “To Simone, I am asking you directly and publicly to please put a stop to this," Skinner said in Tuesday's video. A few days after her comments in June, Skinner posted an apology on social media. After Biles' Instagram post last week, Skinner reportedly blocked the 11-time Olympic medalist on social media, according to an Instagram story posted by Chiles and a post on X by Biles. The edited photo implied that Skinner should have made the 2016 U.S. Olympic team over Douglas, who became the first Black Olympic all-around champion in 2012.

The regulators wrote that the app billed itself as a “safe space” for teens but, in reality, preyed on them. The app, known as NGL, had been downloaded millions of times, according to the complaint. NGL deceptively hooked teens into subscribing to its premium service by sending them fake, anonymous messages and then promising to reveal the sender after they paid, said the complaint. Highlighting the groundbreaking nature of the NGL settlement, FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson described Tuesday’s action as a “novel” use of the agency’s legal powers. But, he argued, the public should not interpret the lawsuit to mean that it is illegal in general to market any anonymous messaging app to teens.

“Our study of over two million individuals from 160+ countries runs contrary to this idea.”People with access to home internet and/or mobile internet and actively use internet report greater well-being across eight different categories — including life satisfaction and social life, according to a study published Monday in the journal Technology, Mind, and Behavior. Across all those ways of crunching the numbers, about 85% showed that those who have and use the internet report greater well-being that those who do not, according to the research. Other research has shown that the connection between mobile internet use and well-being is complex and varies among individuals, he added. “Our results might then simply indicate that individuals with more money, access to healthcare, etc, report greater well-being,” Vuorre said in an email. The internet is used for a wide variety of things — including online banking, shopping, finding services, reading the news and cyberbullying — and those different uses will have different effects on well-being, Vuorre said.

In 2022, the Utah legislature banned transgender girls from high school girls’ sports. In August 2022, a Utah judge granted a preliminary injunction allowing trans girls to compete on girls’ teams after the parents of two trans girls filed a lawsuit. But as long as transgender girls’ gender identities are policed, cisgender girls will continue to have theirs policed as well. “I avoided athletic activities out of terror, not disinterest,” one participant said (a new study published last month also found that trans girls are primarily avoiding sports out of fear of harassment). If cisgender girls avoid sports out of these fears as well, they stand to be similarly negatively impacted.

With lots of kids now getting their news from social media – where disinformation and content created by artificial intelligence run rampant – 18 states have some form of K-12 media literacy education on the books, according to Media Literacy Now. Of those, four – Delaware, Texas, New Jersey and, starting this year, California – mandate media literacy, with lesson standards now being crafted state by state. “But we haven’t really taught people how to use them ethically, efficiently and responsibly.”To do that, a media literacy lesson might include analyzing which emotions the wording of a mass media headline evoke. And California starting this year requires media literacy instruction to be integrated into K-12 mathematics, science and history-social science curriculums when they’re revised, according to the bill. It’s why Manganello has spent nearly two decades perfecting how she teaches media literacy.

Relational aggression among teens isn’t anything new, but it can be especially hideous when it plays out alongside cyberbullying. Relational aggression among minors is complexCancel culture trickled down to teens, tweens and even younger children, and the combination of cyberbullying and social isolation in school can be swift. Protective factors are essentialTeens need sources of support and understanding when they’re dealing with relational aggression and cyberbullying, and this is where protective factors become important. • Research the reporting options at your teen’s school in case your teen decides to seek help on campus. What’s difficult about relational aggression is that it’s often subtle and under the radar of adults working in teen spaces.

There's only one correct answer if you want them to lead happier, more successful lives, says Yale University psychology professor Laurie Santos: "Wait as long as possible." This is likely to encourage poor mental health — in ways that affect kids differently than adults — and distractions in the classroom, Santos says. Social media use exposes many kids to cyberbullying, hate speech and discrimination, Make It reported in May. "These are brains that are forming and trying to pay attention in school [while their phones are going] ding, ding, ding." "They're not going to want to do as you say, they're going to want to do as you do," Santos says.

May told Insider that being open about the challenges you're facing can make you a better leader. Leaders need to "take the wall down" so those under them can say what they need to perform best. Insider recently asked May about her work in HR and meeting the needs of the company's large employee base. But you also need to work for companies with leaders that really understand the challenges. But I think employers need to keep top of mind the needs of their people.

Big Tech companies also prey on ordinary users. It’s time to rein in Big Tech. In 1975 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission took on nuclear power, and in 1977 the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission took on electric generation and transmission.
