Read previewAn art museum in Australia that was embroiled in a gender dispute involving several "Picasso" paintings has admitted that the works were fake. The paintings had been at the center of a gender battle that broke out after a man from the Australian state of New South Wales took legal action against the gallery after being refused entry to the museum's "Ladies Lounge" exhibition. The exhibition contained some of the museum's most notable artworks, including some said to have been produced by the Spanish Cubist Pablo Picasso. "I knew of a number of Picasso paintings I could borrow from friends, but none of them were green and I wished for the Lounge to be monochrome. The forgery prompted a reevaluation of other works displayed in the Ladies Lounge, and Kaechele revealed that some other items were also not genuine.

A French Castle Filled With a Collector’s Treasures

When the French gallerist Yves Gastou bought the Ermitage de Douce-amie — or refuge of a sweet friend — a follylike crenelated castle on the outskirts of Biarritz in southwest France, in 1990, it had the air of a place frozen in time. Hidden within a forest of bamboo and pine, bay and oak trees, the 5,380-square-foot house was built in 1900 as a retirement home for a member of the imperial court of Napoleon III, or so Gastou believed. The house had changed hands only a few times since: The woman from whom he purchased it was among the last ladies in Biarritz to travel by horse and cart. The hermitage was his summer hideaway, a place for monthslong vacations with family and friends. And if his Paris home was an expression of his appetite for modernity — it epitomized his eclectic tastes, with Cubist midcentury furniture by the French sculptor Philippe Hiquily and acrylic 1980s-era pieces by the Japanese designer Shiro Kuramata — the castle offered a retreat into the past.

Titled “Eileen Agar: Flowering of a Wing: Works, 1936 -1989,” this knockout is at Andrew Kreps Gallery (through Saturday). Its title, taken from one of the canvases here, signals Agar’s lifelong devotion to nature and to ambiguous meanings. Agar may be best known for her collages and their fusion of Surrealist imagination and Cubist structure and geometry. But this show homes in on the paintings, which have a contemporary air and are plenty interesting enough. Most of the paintings here involve several shades of blue, as if haunted by Matisse’s “The Blue Window” (1913) in the Museum of Modern Art.

She often titled her portraits of women “Friends” or “Two Friends,” leaving the exact nature of their intimacy unclear. It’s almost like a radical utopia… a world of women, for women, by women,” Kang said.

The Exhibition Making the Case for Art Without Men

“If you want what is commonly accepted as ‘a straight answer to a straight question,’ don’t go to Marie Laurencin to get it,” Dorothy Todd, the British magazine editor, wrote in 1928. If answers from Laurencin — one of the most notable female painters in interwar France — were anything like her work, of course they wouldn’t be straight, but coy, queer, covert and very pretty. “Marie Laurencin: Sapphic Paris,” a new exhibition that puts all of the artist’s coded qualities on full display, opened this week at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. Born in 1883 in Paris, Laurencin became a central member of the artistic avant-garde, ruled by her friend Picasso, in early 1900s Paris. The Barnes show is the first major solo Laurencin exhibition in the United States in three decades, and the first exhibition of her work to highlight the obvious: Laurencin’s art is unavoidably queer, and noticeably lacking in men.

“I don’t think there is any way of discussing Teju Cole’s aesthetic without putting front and center this idea of his relentless inventiveness,” the writer Amitava Kumar wrote by email. Cole calls his new novel “a reiteration of my faith in fiction.” But it didn’t come easily or quickly. After “Open City,” Cole began to conceive of a big work of nonfiction on Lagos, his hometown, in the vein of Suketu Mehta’s book “Maximum City,” about Mumbai. (Cole, who often borrows from his own biography in his books, was born in Kalamazoo, Mich. and raised in Nigeria. Virginie Viard’s spring collection emerged as a sun-drenched ode to liberty and movement, inspired directly from the villa’s gardens. This was Viard's Chanel: clothes that seemed relaxed and with nothing to prove. Viard’s Chanel feels less about dazzling the onlooker and more about connecting with her. While Lagerfeld’s Chanel was an aspiration, Viard’s is becoming a reflection. Last month, Cruz alongside her sister, Mónica Cruz, unveiled a fashion collection on Instagram, hinting at her deep-seated respect for the craft.

Liquid staking protocols give investors access to liquidity while staking their funds. In April, the total value locked in liquid staking protocols began outpacing the total value locked in lending protocols and decentralized exchanges, according to DefiLlama. Here's what investors need to know about liquid staking compared to regular staking. It's less risky Like anything in crypto, liquid staking isn't without its risks – primarily technological and regulatory. "Staking as an activity has become too risky and it's a no-brainer for many people who are considering vanilla staking versus liquid staking," said Christine Kim, vice president of research at Galaxy.

A low-riding shuffle beat isn’t the Cuban-born pianist, composer and folklorist David Virelles’s most common environment. But “Carta,” Virelles’s new LP, puts him and his longtime first-call bassist, Ben Street, together with Eric McPherson, an innovator and tradition-bearer in today’s jazz drumming. This is the closest Virelles has come to making a standard-format jazz trio album, though it’s still not exactly that. You wouldn’t need to be told this album was recorded at Van Gelder Studio to realize it’s speaking with jazz history — the antique, the modern and what’s barely come into shape. Françoise Gilot, a tireless artist who defied simple categorization — and efforts to define her merely as a footnote in the story of her former lover Pablo Picasso — died Tuesday in New York. The early years of her career coincided with World War II and the Nazi occupation of Paris. In 1970, Gilot married her second husband, Jonas Salk, a virologist who developed one of the first polio vaccines. "Paloma à la Guitare" by Francoise Gilot (1965) was part of Sotheby's (Women) Artists Sale in 2021 in London, England. In 2012, Gagosian staged the first exhibition of Gilot’s work alongside Picasso’s, “Picasso and Françoise Gilot: Paris–Vallauris 1943–1953,” which focused on works made during their relationship.

And yet, the Grand Canyon remains yoked to the present in one key respect. The Colorado River, whose wild energy incised the canyon over millions of years, is in crisis. Down beneath the tourist lodges and shops selling keychains and incense, past windswept arroyos and brown valleys speckled with agave, juniper and sagebrush, the rocks of the Grand Canyon seem untethered from time. The Grand Canyon is a planetary spectacle like none other — one that also happens to host a river that 40 million people rely on for water and power. At Mile 0 of the Grand Canyon, the river is running at around 7,000 cubic feet per second, rising toward 9,000 — not the lowest flows on record, but far from the highest.

Heavyweight multi-strategy hedge funds aren't known for their patience. It seems their patience has run out on the index-rebalance strategy, one of the most popular and sought-after hedge fund moneymakers in recent years. Representatives for the hedge funds declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment. While hedge funds are allocating their capital elsewhere, they haven't given up on index-rebalance trading. Do you know more about the index-rebalance trade?
The cubist ‘Guitar on a Table’ was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1919 and acquired by William Paley in 1946. A foundation for CBS founder William Paley has started selling off a trove of masterpieces long lent to New York’s Museum of Modern Art to fund an expansion of the museum’s digital footprint—including a Pablo Picasso that sold Monday for $37.1 million. The sale at Sotheby’s landed a week after Christie’s made auction history selling Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen ’s $1.5 billion art estate. While Mr. Allen’s art stirred up a marketing bonanza, collectors and dealers say they will be seeking clues about the market’s broader strength during these remaining sales in New York’s fall series.
