  + stars: | 2024-11-03 | by ( Terence Burlij | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
With so much at stake, CNN has identified 10 races to watch on Tuesday – grouped into buckets that nod to broader themes across the House landscape. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided against seeking a fourth term, instead launching a campaign for governor in 2025. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has crafted a moderate profile by challenging his party on issues ranging from spending to immigration. This year she faces a challenge from GOP state Rep. Gabe Evans, a fellow Mexican American and a former Army helicopter pilot and police officer. GOP Rep. Zach Nunn, an Air Force officer, was first elected in 2022 – defeating Democratic Rep. Cindy Axne by about 2,000 votes.

The list of negatives surrounding stocks is growing, according to BCA Research. Chief strategist Irene Tunkel warned in a note Monday that she doesn't "anticipate new market highs within the next three months — there are too many negative crosscurrents for equities." Others on the Street, including BTIG's Jonathan Krinsky and Bank of America's Stephen Suttmeier , have warned investors to remain vigilant in the near term. Elsewhere on Wall Street this morning, Wells Fargo initiated Rollins with an overweight rating, citing increased demand for pest control products and services. "Rollins' organic growth rates accelerated from mid-single to high-single digits during the pandemic and have remained at this elevated rate since," Wells Fargo said.

The S & P 500 made a new record high, its 25 th of the year. And on the surface, there is a stolid calm that suggests a system in comfortable equilibrium, the market achieving a kind of homeostasis. Four of the past five days last week, the S & P 500 moved less than 0.2%. The S & P 500 is up almost 2% since its closing peak at the end of the first quarter, perhaps the moment of maximum belief in a seamless soft economic landing. Three stocks together now account for fully 20% of the S & P 500 market value, mocking the notion of diversification and dashing most active investors' hopes of beating the bogey.

The European Union’s upcoming ban on imports linked to deforestation has been hailed as a “gold standard” in climate policy: a meaningful step to protect the world’s forests, which help remove planet-killing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. The law requires traders to trace the origins of a head-spinning variety of products — beef to books, chocolate and charcoal, lipstick and leather. To the European Union, the mandate, set to take effect next year, is a testament to the bloc’s role as a global leader on climate change. Developing countries have expressed outrage — with Malaysia and Indonesia among the most vocal. Together, the two nations supply 85 percent of the world’s palm oil, one of seven critical commodities covered by the European Union’s ban.

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — It was President Joe Biden's first big campaign rally of the year, a chance to spotlight the issue of protecting abortion rights. Instead, at least a dozen times during Biden's 22-minute speech, demonstrators scattered throughout the audience rose to shout out demands for a cease-fire in Gaza. Joe!”“They feel deeply,” Biden said of the demonstrators, who were pulled from the room by security personnel. The Democratic president is increasingly contending with protests inside and outside his events from progressives upset about his administration's support for Israel in its offensive in Gaza. Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler said Biden's response to demonstrators shows he's “a president who understands and respects Americans' fundamental First Amendment rights to peacefully protest."

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told Fox Business Network he sees similarities between the economy of the 1970s and 2024. Dimon said he isn't sure the economy will achieve the soft landing the Fed is trying to engineer. The 1970s was marked by a period of high inflation and stagnant economic growth. AdvertisementJPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said 2024 may just be like the 1970s — and it's more about the economy than nostalgia. "And that looks a little more like the 1970s to me," Dimon told Bartiromo, referring to a period when stagnant growth and high inflation pressured the economy.

Meanwhile, there is growing excitement that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will approve the first ever bitcoin ETF, after years of opposition. With all of this excitement comes some quite bold predictions about bitcoin's price. "No rationale for that prediction," Mobius said, except that a bitcoin ETF looks likely and "that has heightened interest" in the cryptocurrency. Yang attributes the anticipated price rise to a bitcoin ETF being approved, leading to higher institutional investment in bitcoin, as well as May 2024's bitcoin halving, which would result in the bitcoin supply being constrained. Alexander told CNBC that during the first quarter of 2024, bitcoin will trade within the $40,000 to $55,000 range, owing to "professional traders creating volatility."

The Biden administration with its diverse coalition of voters is trying to navigate these crosscurrents just as the 2024 presidential race is heating up. In Dubai, Harris said it was “our duty and our obligation” to do more to move the world away from fossil fuels and limit the increase in average global temperatures. “President Biden and his administration should show their statement in action,” said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

First, House Republicans chose an establishment guy to be their speaker. Then they tried an ultraconservative candidate, but mainstream members struck back, quickly killing his candidacy. Back at square one after 20 days without a speaker, many House Republicans have found themselves asking: Are we simply too dysfunctional to govern? With a free-for-all raging in their ranks, House Republicans were huddling behind closed doors on Monday evening to hear from no fewer than eight contenders campaigning to be the party’s latest nominee for speaker. But the tangle of crosscurrents dividing them means that there is no guarantee that the victor can actually win the post on the House floor.

Three highly anticipated initial public offerings that came to market this past week raised investor hopes that a nearly two-year-long drought in IPOs might finally be coming to an end. In fact, the Renaissance IPO ETF that tracks aftermarket trading in recent IPOs picked up heading into Arm's offering, but fell 2.5% on Thursday and is down nearly 5% this month. Market barometer IPOs are a barometer of market confidence as investors bet on the hope that they are snatching up companies with strong growth potential, said Truist Advisory Service's chief market strategist Keith Lerner. The underwhelming performance of recent IPOs is just another sign that the choppy market waters are likely to continue, he added. From that perspective, the recent IPOs aren't necessarily a sign of market failure, according to Sarhan.
