The two NASA astronauts who have been stuck on the International Space Station since their Boeing spacecraft ran into problems in June will have to remain there even longer, the agency announced Tuesday. They include NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who launched on the challenge-plagued first test flight of Boeing’s Starliner vehicle. The two originally intended to spend about a week at the space station but will wind up having lived and worked in orbit for more than nine months, including the added time for the latest delay. When the capsule launches — a mission known as Crew-10 — it is expected to carry NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov and Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi. Until then, the foursome will continue training for their mission at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, NASA said.

CNN —As they were coming in for a landing, a “plume” of bad weather suddenly appeared in front of Hawaiian Airlines pilots who hit severe turbulence just seconds later. According to the NTSB’s final report, before Hawaiian Airlines flight 35, flying on an Airbus 330-299, departed Phoenix and headed for Honolulu, the captain was informed of “potential turbulence and embedded convective activity” over the Hawaiian Islands. A Hawaiian Airlines flight approaches Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole on the island of Hawaii on January 18, 2024. A 2022 incident of turbulence aboard a Hawaiian Airlines flight injured dozens. Hawaiian Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but previously told CNN it was “supporting all affected passengers and employees.”

The team of two men and one woman will replace the astronauts who have lived on the Tiangong space station for the last six months, conducting a variety of experiments and maintaining the structure. China built its own space station after being excluded from the International Space Station, mainly because of U.S. concerns over the overall control over the space program by the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm. China’s moon program is part of a growing rivalry with the U.S. and others, including Japan and India. Besides putting a space station into orbit, the Chinese space agency has landed an explorer on Mars. China’s space authorities say they have measures in place in case their astronauts have to return to Earth earlier.

A NASA astronaut was flown to a hospital with an unspecified medical issue on Friday shortly after returning to Earth from a nearly eight-month mission on the International Space Station, the space agency said. The astronaut, who NASA did not name for privacy reasons, had splashed down off Florida’s coast at 3:29 a.m. ET on Friday aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule with three other crew members — two NASA astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut. Their 235 days in space made it longer than the usual six-month ISS mission duration and marked the longest stay in orbit for SpaceX’s reusable Crew Dragon spacecraft. The Elon Musk-owned company remains the only U.S. option for NASA astronaut trips to and from the ISS.

CNN —Archaeologists have identified the cannibalized remains of a senior officer who perished during an ill-fated 19th century Arctic expedition, offering insight into its lost crew’s tragic and grisly final days. The remains identified as Fitzjames’ in the new study, published September 24 in the Journal of Archaeological Science, were among them. The remains of James Fitzjames, a senior officer who took part in Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to the Northwest Passage, showed signs of having been cannibalized, a new study said. However, unlike Fitzjames’ remains, Gregory’s bones did not display any cut marks suggestive of cannibalism. Canada’s national parks service and the Inuit communities found the final resting place of the HMS Erebus in 2014 and the HMS Terror in 2016.

The Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts is on track to land off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, at 3:36 a.m. Already, the Polaris Dawn mission has made history as it reached a higher altitude than any human has traveled in five decades. To safely reach home, the Crew Dragon capsule will carry out what’s called a “de-orbit burn,” orienting itself as it prepares to slice through the thickest part of Earth’s atmosphere. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the Crew Dragon capsule's hatch on Thursday during the first commercial spacewalk. Sunday’s anticipated return will mark the conclusion of the third trip to space for the specific Crew Dragon capsule powering the Polaris Dawn mission.

CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission kicked off early Tuesday, launching a four-person crew of civilian astronauts into orbit. The company confirmed that the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying the crew reached its peak altitude of 1,400.7 kilometers (870 miles) at 9:19 p.m. The Polaris Dawn mission also marks the farthest any human has journeyed since the final Apollo mission in 1972 — and the farthest into space a woman has ever traveled. The pre-breathe protocol the Polaris Dawn crew is undergoing is entirely unlike what is carried out on the International Space Station. In this screenshot from video, the Polaris Dawn crew sit in the Dragon capsule shortly after launching towards space on Tuesday.

The mission, dubbed Polaris Dawn, was set to take flight as soon as 3:38 a.m. This launch attempt comes after several issues hampered the Polaris Dawn crew’s efforts to get off the ground in late August. Because carrying out a spacewalk will create a drain on oxygen supplies, the Polaris Dawn mission will have only enough life support for five or six days in space. If successful, Polaris Dawn would beat that record by about 20 miles (32 kilometers). Polaris Dawn may also mark the farthest any woman has ever gone into space.

Crew members haven’t been able to get off the ship for a variety of reasons. Bennett’s email identifies the eight eligible crew members, which include a cook, a fitter and an oiler. As part of the deal, those crew members will not need to stay in Baltimore. Investigators recounted the crew’s desperate efforts to restore electrical power and halt the ship’s drift toward the bridge. They described how one of eight maintenance workers still on the bridge that night managed to sprint to safety moments before the bridge collapsed. The 985-foot-long vessel departed the Port of Baltimore around 1 a.m. on March 26 and traveled along a heavily used shipping channel that would take it under the Francis Scott Key Bridge. But as it approached the bridge, the power went out on the vessel and alarms blared. Thunderous explosions shook the ground as the Ukrainian crew prepared to maneuver its American-made Bradley fighting vehicle out of camouflage and, once again, into the fire. The commander of the team, a sergeant with the call sign Lawyer, nervously scanned the sky. “If we are seen, the KABs will come,” he said, referring to the one-ton bombs Russia has been using to target Ukraine’s most valuable armor and defenses. The crew’s mission was to help contain the breach: protect outmanned and outgunned infantry soldiers, evacuate the wounded and use the Bradley’s powerful 25-millimeter cannon against as many Russians as possible. Mortars and rockets exploded all around, and the gunner was badly injured, said the commander, identified only by his call sign according to military protocol.

The crew at an artillery position in eastern Ukraine had 33 shells in its ammunition bunker, stacked neatly like firewood against a wall. Twenty minutes later, smoke wafted around a howitzer and 17 shells were gone — more than half the crew’s ammunition. The rapidly depleted stack was emblematic of Ukraine’s dwindling supply of artillery munitions, even as Russian attacks persist. “Artillery decides battles,” said Capt.
