  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Ryan Baker | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
In 2023, Americans spent about $17.7 billion on out-of-home cold coffee including iced coffee, cold brew and frozen coffee drinks. Giants like Starbucks have played a major role in iced drinks taking share from more traditional hot coffee. 45% of coffee drinkers ages 18 to 24 said they had a cold coffee in the past day according to a survey conducted in July 2024 by the National Coffee Association. Cold coffee drinks are highly customizable, with syrups, toppings and cold foam incorporated into many of the popular offerings at major coffeehouse chains. Watch the video to learn more about why cold coffee has taken off in the United States.

The blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy may help people cut back on drinking, new research published Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry suggests. Just over 28 million adults in the U.S. have alcohol addiction, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Several other studies have examined drinking habits among people taking GLP-1 drugs who do not have alcohol use disorder. Around 75,000 people in the study used some type of medication to treat alcohol use disorder. So far, the clearest results have come from studies on alcohol addiction — but there is still a lot to understand.

The researchers found that reducing sugar consumption in this window decreased the type 2 diabetes risk by about 35% and the risk of high blood pressure by roughly 20%. The research team looked at data from before and after the end of the United Kingdom’s World War II-era sugar rationing in September 1953. When the rationing of sugar and sweets ended in September 1953, the average adult’s daily sugar consumption in the UK nearly doubled almost immediately, from about 40 grams to 80 grams. Corkins says one way for parents to reduce sugar consumption in young children is to change their own habits. The key is practicing moderation when consuming sugary foods.

I felt like no one was talking to me about what perimenopause symptoms were like. It felt like I was going through puberty all over again — but how could that be in my late 30s? Little did I know second puberty is not an official term but one used regularly when talking about perimenopause. But I know that talking about perimenopause can be helpful to other women who are feeling the same way. Berry found out that her blood sugar was crashing every afternoon when she had a high-carb breakfast, which helped explain the exhaustion she'd been feeling. A high-protein breakfast can provide lasting fuelPrior to checking out her blood sugar response, Berry might have a pastry or white toast for breakfast. "An increase in circulating blood sugar is a normal physiological response to eating carbohydrate," she said. For instance, there's some evidence that eating late at night can prompt a bigger blood sugar response, but Berry said it's worth it to have dinner with her family.

But experts emphasize that much more research is needed before using the medications off-label for smoking cessation. In a study published Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers tracked the medical records of more than 200,000 people who started medications to treat type 2 diabetes, including nearly 6,000 people using semaglutide medications such as Ozempic. Over the course of a year, people who started using semaglutide were significantly less likely to have medical encounters for tobacco use disorders, prescriptions for medications for smoking cessation or counseling for smoking cessation than those who started other diabetes medications such as insulin and metformin. “A signal like this one cannot be ignored, particularly because of how consequential it could be if, in fact, we can have now a new medication for treating smoking cessation,” she said. But fewer than 1 in 10 adult cigarette smokers succeed in quitting each year, according to the new study, and options for smoking cessation treatment haven’t changed much in decades.
