When asked once in a question-and-answer sit-down with the school to describe St. John’s, Carnesecca said: “home.”It was home where he coached St. John’s to 18 20-win seasons and 18 NCAA Tournament appearances. Carnesecca coached St. John’s to the NIT title in 1989, although by then the tournament had long been a poor cousin to the NCAAs. In 1958, he took an assistant’s job at St. John’s, his alma mater, where he had played baseball but not varsity basketball. Essentially, St. John’s was getting ready for a road trip to Pittsburgh in January and Carnesecca was under the weather. After he retired, Carnesecca was succeeded by a parade of coaches at St. John’s, Mullin among them.

Accepting a position as general manager of a Division I basketball team doesn't usually mean a decline in working hours. For Adrian Wojnarowski, though, a new gig running the men's program at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure, will likely feel like a breath of fresh air. "Time isn't in endless supply and I want to spend mine in ways that are personally meaningful." His gig at ESPN meant breaking news, writing follow-up stories, appearing on ESPN's TV shows and hosting a podcast. And that was life he chose not to do any longer because it takes over your life."

Pro-Palestinian protesters shut down traffic Monday morning in cities across the country, part of a global effort to disrupt economies and pressure world leaders to push for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. In Chicago, protesters on I-190 blocked traffic coming into O’Hare International Airport, and passengers who’d already arrived started walking on foot with their luggage to catch their flights. In San Antonio, protesters carrying Palestinian flags blocked both sides of the Valero energy company headquarters, jamming traffic on the city’s northwest side. And in Philadelphia, pro-Palestinian protesters organized a teach-in that blocked rush-hour traffic. In Middletown, Conn., for example, pro-Palestinian protesters blocked employees entering and leaving a Pratt & Whitney factory that exports military engines for aircrafts.

A Big Night — but Will It Matter?

President Biden was not even halfway through his 68-minute State of the Union speech when Simon Rosenberg, the rare Democratic strategist who is bullish on Biden’s re-election prospects, fired off a note to the readers of his Substack newsletter. “The President is Kicking Ass!” it read (though with many more exclamation points attached). The Biden campaign soon reported that the three hours surrounding the prime-time speech were the most lucrative fund-raising hours of the president’s re-election campaign so far. The rousing speech was, at least for Democrats worried about Biden’s re-election prospects, a welcome success — and on a night when it mattered. Undecided voters can be targeted precisely in many ways, with TikTok the most au courant example.

How Can I Update My Millennial Style?
  + stars: | 2024-02-12 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Here’s my problem: I am stuck in a millennial sense of fashion — tight jeans, a looser top, cardigans and ballet flats or riding boots. What’s the easiest way to update my style? Gen Z has been mocking millennial style with so much glee in the last few years that doing so has become its own TikTok trend. But seeing this as a generational issue is, it seems to me, a mistake. In fact, do not think in terms of time periods and their fashion.

CNN —Polls are open in El Salvador, where the strongman president Nayib Bukele is expected to easily win a second term amid a dramatic turnaround in the country’s once-sky high levels of violence. Bukele, 42, faced little in the way of organized opposition and enjoys one of the highest favorability ratings in the region, regularly polling above 70% in independent surveys. His supporters trumpet a crackdown on criminal gangs in the country that resulted in a dramatic fall in the murder rate, once the highest in the world. But the mass arrests – El Salvador now has the world’s highest incarceration rate – have also triggered outcry from human rights groups, who allege Bukele’s government has detained innocent people and subjected prisoners to dehumanizing conditions behind bars, including torture. A lopsided win for Bukele would likely give the young leader more leeway to reform El Salvador in his heavy-handed vision.

With at least 40% of U.S. employees working remotely at least one day a week, chances are your work-from-home setup is in need of a little sprucing up. Ever since I got my first cell phone back in 2007, I've been charging my devices with a cable that plugged right into the charging port. Recently, however, I've been using the CATCH:3 from luxury charging brand Courant, and I might never go back. The sleek charging mat doubles as a tray, holding my glasses and watch while my phone charges on my nightstand. The material is ultra-soft and I love that they look more put together than my old sweatpants from college.

Now, a new study offers evidence to suggest that theory might be plausible, according to a news release from New York University. … Our experiments could add to the understanding of how these yardangs form,” he said. More on the mysterious Great Sphinx originsWhile the Great Sphinx of Giza has its mysteries — what it originally looked like and why it was made — it is believed that the 66-foot-tall (20-meter-tall) statue was carved out of a single piece of limestone. “There is too much evidence of human intervention in the construction of the Great Sphinx to make the yardang theory feasible,” Ikram said. The New York University researchers said their results suggest that Sphinx-like structures can form under fairly commonplace conditions, but their findings don’t resolve the mysteries behind yardangs and the Great Sphinx.

Led by Scorsese, the filmmakers aimed to be scrupulously authentic in the ways they depicted the Osage, down to the threads in their clothing. “Few people in the world could afford that, but they documented their lives and their travel and where they lived so beautifully. By the early 20th century, the Osage were as au courant as Vogue editors. The wedding scene in “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a showstopper, with Mollie Kyle, the bride played by Gladstone, and her bridesmaid sisters in richly embroidered skirts, finger-woven belts and bespoke military coats, complete with brass buttons and braided epaulets. THE DEADLINE: Essays, by Jill LeporeIn 1636, at the height of the Dutch economic hysteria known as Tulipomania, John Harvard helped found the first college of the American colonies. It’s a good thing I do not have Jill Lepore’s job. The phrase “historical framework” is insufficient when it comes to Lepore, who also provides the picture and the glass. Through these figures Lepore covers American consumerism, literary biography, journalism, intellectual property law and other cultural curiosities. But it’s her inclinations toward misfits and old narratives we have taken for granted that make “The Deadline” glow.

[1/2] Bob Barker introduces the "Plinko" game segment during the taping of his final episode of the game show "The Price Is Right" in Los Angeles June 6, 2007. Barker died on Saturday morning of natural causes at his longtime Hollywood Hills, California, home, his publicist Roger Neal said. "No, I'm working," deadpanned Barker, known for his good-natured humor. In the film "Happy Gilmore," Barker played himself in a memorable scene in which he was playing in a golf pro-am tournament with Sandler's character, an excitable failed hockey player turned golfer. Even before his stint on that show wrapped up, Barker began hosting "The Price Is Right" on CBS.

Shortly after the shooting, Colleen Murphy, executive director and general counsel of Connecticut’s Freedom of Information Commission, received a call from a state legislator convinced that the filmmaker Michael Moore was seeking crime scene photos of the children. But Ms. Murphy told the lawmaker that her office, which fields all public records requests, had received no such inquiry. Some Sandy Hook families interpreted Mr. Moore’s remarks as “a horrific campaign to make the crime scene photos public,” Jennifer Hensel, whose 6-year-old daughter Avielle Richman died, wrote in The New Haven Register. “We cannot stand the thought of seeing the graphic depiction of our child’s death promoted to serve anyone’s political purposes.”Mr. Moore publicly clarified his view that no one should release photos without the families’ permission. Yet even today those requesting Connecticut homicide-related records must demonstrate that the release does not constitute an “unwarranted invasion of privacy.”

I don’t know if anyone has ever clocked whether Tom Cruise is faster than a speeding bullet. He racks up more miles in “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh entry in a 27-year-old franchise that repeatedly affirms a movie truism. That is, there are few sights more cinematic than a human being outracing danger and even death onscreen — it’s the ultimate wish fulfillment! Once again, he plays Ethan Hunt, the leader of a hush-hush American spy agency, the Impossible Mission Force. The whole thing is complicated, as these stories tend to be, with stakes as catastrophic as recent news headlines have trumpeted.

Nevertheless, in 2007, the Blackstone Group bought Mr. Zell’s firm — then known as Equity Office Properties Trust — for $39 billion. A Deal Comes With DebtLike many newspapers, the Tribune properties were hemorrhaging advertising revenues and readers to the internet. The company had been on the auction block for months when Mr. Zell — insisting that his interests were purely economic, not editorial — offered $34 a share in a complex transaction to take the company private under an employee stock-ownership plan. In that highly leveraged buyout, the debt was to be paid off almost entirely by cash generated by the company’s continuing operations. The new corporation was exempt from federal income taxes, and the debt was reduced by the sale of Newsday, the Cubs and Wrigley Field.
With irrational anger so in vogue, the time seems ripe for “Beef”—as in gripe, or grievance, though neither does justice to the reckless ferocity of the antics in this nerve-jangling, black-edged comedy. Comedy may be overstating things, actually: The series, created by Lee Sung Jin (“Dave,” “Silicon Valley”), makes the venting of spleen look ridiculous. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. (Or, lest one forget, even get into a road-rage incident.) What’s both amusing and cautionary isn’t just the fact that two volatile people in an unhappy place happen to cross paths at precisely the wrong moment.
Kyrsten Sinema once slammed a Democratic senator for trying to court Republican voters. Sinema — then a social worker — said in 2003 of presidential-hopeful Joe Lieberman. In 2003, the now-Arizona senator was outside of a meeting for presidential-hopeful Sen. Joe Lieberman from Connecticut, the Hartford Courant reported at the time. Then a social worker, Sinema disagreed with Lieberman's stances on the war — and even more so, his campaign strategy. Sen. Sinema announced Friday morning she is leaving the Democratic party to become an independent herself.
As in Danchenko’s trial, Durham failed to convict Sussmann of making false statements to the FBI. And therein lies the reason underlying Durham’s losing trial record. On Monday, during Durham’s closing argument against Danchenko, the special prosecutor made a point of rebuking the FBI’s 2016 investigation. The Hartford Courant reported her concern about “pressure from Barr ... to produce results before the election.”Durham, however, stuck with Barr. And Barr’s energetic attempts after Jan. 6 to rehabilitate his image cannot erase his sad final legacy as a Trump enabler.
