Bangkok, Thailand CNN —A Thai court has handed down the death penalty to a woman accused of fatally poisoning at least a dozen people, the first ruling in a high-profile serial murder case that has gripped the nation. The court convicted her of charges including premeditated murder, robbery causing death and spiking food or other consumables resulting in death. In addition to the death sentence, she was also ordered to pay compensation for unrecovered stolen items. Thanicha told CNN on Thursday that Saratat denies the accusations against her and plans to appeal her conviction. No executions have taken place since, but courts have handed down the death sentence in several cases, including the high-profile murders of two British backpackers in 2019.

The Danish military said Wednesday that it was staying close to a Chinese ship currently sitting idle in Danish waters, days after two fiber-optic data telecommunication cables in the Baltic Sea were severed. Chinese bulk carrier Yi Peng 3 was anchored in the Kattegat strait between Denmark and Sweden on Wednesday, with a Danish navy patrol ship at anchor nearby, MarineTraffic vessel tracking data showed. “The Danish Defense can confirm that we are present in the area near the Chinese ship Yi Peng 3,” the military said in a post on social media X, adding it had no further comments. It is quite rare for Denmark’s military to comment publicly on individual vessels travelling in Danish waters. It did not mention the cable breaches or say why it was staying with the ship.

Comcast announced a plan Wednesday to spin off most of its cable television networks into a separate publicly traded company. The new company will include the USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and the Golf Channel. TEL AVIV — At least five people were wounded by falling shrapnel Monday after a missile fired from Lebanon was intercepted by the Israeli military over a street in the city of Ramat Gan, officials said. Another patient listed in moderate condition and three mildly injured were taken to the Rabin Medical Center, the service said. Israel’s police service said it was “working to secure the impact sites and assist in evacuating the injured” in the city, which is within the Tel Aviv district. The Israeli military said in a statement that the country’s air force had “intercepted one projectile that was identified crossing from Lebanon into Israeli territory. An Israeli airstrike killed five people and another 24 were injured by a strike on central Beirut's densely populated Zuqaq al-Blat neighborhood, Lebanon’s health ministry said Monday.

Australia’s Senate on Monday censured an Indigenous woman parliamentarian over her protest against King Charles during his visit to the parliament last month when she accused the British monarch of genocide. Thorpe’s protest was disruptive and she did not respect the democratic institutions, the motion said. “I’ll do it again, and I’ll do it every time,” Thorpe shouted in parliament when Simon Birmingham, the opposition leader in the Senate, was making his comments on the motion. She was told to recite the affirmation — a form of parliamentary oath that omits a reference to God — as written. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged the country’s military to improve capabilities for fighting a war in a speech last week, state media KCNA said on Monday, after Pyongyang dispatched thousands of troops to Russia. The report came amid international criticism over rapidly developing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. Washington, Seoul and Kyiv have said there are more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia to support its war against Ukraine, and some of them have engaged in combat in Kursk, near the Ukraine border. Biden’s administration has allowed Ukraine to use U.S.-made weapons to strike deep into Russia, sources told NBC News, marking a significant policy reversal and a response to Russia’s deployment of North Korean ground troops. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump announced Monday he has selected former congressman and recent Fox Business co-host Sean Duffy to serve as the next secretary of the Department of Transportation. He most recently was co-host of Fox Business’ “The Bottom Line,” after first joining Fox News as a contributor in 2020. Wednesday marked his last day appearing on Fox Business, and he interviewed for the role of transportation secretary later in the week, according to a source.
