New York CNN —Sam’s Club said Tuesday it will raise pay to incentivize workers to stay with the company — and not jump ship to Costco. Sam’s Club, the membership club arm of Walmart, will increase its minimum wage to $16 starting in November from $15 an hour. To keep and grow its membership, Sam’s Club must meet a higher bar for customer service than retailers open to everyone. “The thing that we’re trying to do here is create good jobs that turn into great careers,” Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas told CNN. Warehouse clubs have also boomed since the pandemic in 2020, and Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Club have added millions of new members.

The Wall Street investment bank sees the S & P 500 rising about 6% to 6,000 in the next 12 months from Friday's close of 5,626.02. "Resilient economic growth should lead to modestly higher bond yields while continued earnings growth drives modestly higher equity prices," David Kostin, Goldman's head of U.S. equity, said in a note to clients on Friday. Wall Street is counting on lower corporate and consumer borrowing costs to boost earnings growth and stock prices. With multiples flat, EPS growth will lead the S & P 500 modestly higher." Goldman believes stocks with a "long duration" could outperform in a falling interest rate environment.

Lawyers for Washington state will have past grocery chain mergers – and their negative consequences – in mind when they go to court to block a proposed merger between Albertsons and Kroger. Albertsons and Kroger own more than 300 grocery stores in the state and control more than half of grocery sales there. They are trying to get the case dismissed, arguing a state court isn’t the proper venue to consider a nationwide ban. Albertsons and Kroger insist that their plan, including the sale of stores to C&S, will lower grocery prices and preserve competition. In 2016, Albertsons acquired a Haggen supermarket and then promptly closed an Albertsons store about a mile away in Birchwood.

New York CNN —Costco customers are now paying more for their annual memberships for the first time since 2017. The price of Costco’s premium “Executive Membership” also went up, by $10 to $130 a year. The company estimated that 52 million memberships will be impacted, a little over half of which are Executive members, Costco previously said. Last year, Costco earned $4.6 billion in revenue from membership fees, an 8% increase from 2022. Costco (COST) is cracking down on membership moochers by implementing stricter policies and requiring shoppers to scan their membership cards to enter stores.
