Los Angeles (AP) — Prosecutors in Los Angeles are reviewing new evidence in the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez to determine whether they should be serving life sentences for killing their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion more than 35 years ago, the city’s district attorney said Thursday. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said during a news conference that attorneys for Erik Menendez, 53, and his 56-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez, have asked a court to vacate their conviction. Gascón said there is no question the brothers committed the murders, but that his office will be reviewing new evidence and will make a decision on whether it warrants a resentencing. The new evidence presented in a petition includes a letter written by Erik Menendez that his attorneys say corroborates the allegations that he was sexually abused by his father. Cliff Gardner, an attorney for the brothers, said they are pleased by the district attorney’s decision.

A former Florida sheriff's deputy was arrested for manslaughter in connection with the accidental shooting death of his girlfriend, authorities said. Leslie Boileau called 911 Thursday night to report that he had "accidentally shot his girlfriend" at their home in Ocala. Boileau told police that he and his girlfriend had been "handling and dry-firing the firearms" when the shooting happened, authorities said. "While demonstrating the use of a rifle, Boileau accidentally discharged a loaded round, causing the fatal incident," police said. August was the weakest month for job growth since January 2021, according to data from the payrolls processing firm. Still, the ADP data showed that while hiring has slowed considerably, only a few sectors reported actual job losses. Annual pay increased 4.8% for those who stayed in their jobs, about the same level as July, according to ADP. The ADP count now tees up the more closely watched nonfarm payrolls report, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release Friday.

CNN —Riley Strain, a Missouri college student who went missing after leaving a downtown Nashville bar and whose body was later found in a river, died of accidental drowning and alcohol poisoning, the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday. Strain’s body was found in the Cumberland River in West Nashville on the morning of March 22, several miles from where he had gone missing. The autopsy report said Strain’s blood alcohol level was 0.228, which is almost three times the legal driving limit. CNN obtained a copy of the autopsy report from CNN affiliate WTVF and has reached out to the Strain family’s attorney for comment. The news shows how the struggle to control sensitive military data in cyberspace has been a key front in Russia’s full-scale war on Ukraine.
