Beata Zawrzel | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesWith Americans heading to the polls on Election Day, social media companies like Meta , TikTok, X and YouTube are under intense pressure to handle what's expected to be a flood of disinformation, heightened by the rise of artificial intelligence. The video amassed hundreds of thousands of views within hours after it was posted on Elon Musk's social media platform X. And TikTok failed to catch ads containing false election information despite its ban on political advertising, according to an October report from Global Witness. On Facebook and Instagram, Meta said it's adding fact-check labels to election content that's been debunked. In sharing dozens of posts a day on X, Musk regularly amplifies false election information to his more than 200 million followers.

This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. This made "blocking the app much more complicated," the country's trade group for internet service providers added. In response, Musk closed X's Brazil offices and refused to comply with an order to name a legal representative in the country. X didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.

An EU report found X has the highest proportion of Russian disinformation of any major social network. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe EU has warned that X, the social media company owned by Elon Musk, must clamp down on disinformation, after a study found that Russian propaganda was proliferating on the site. A report from the European Commission found that X, formerly Twitter, had the highest proportion of Russian disinformation of any of the major social media platforms, as Musk continues to overhaul the social network's anti-disinformation policies. The report examined 6,000 posts from Spain, Slovakia, and Poland made across a number of social media platforms. Posting on X, the company's Global Government Affairs team said that X was committed to complying with the Digital Services Act.
