Citi thinks aircraft maker Textron is due for a rebound after underperforming thus far in 2023. "We are constructive on revenue and earnings visibility given recent backlog growth, particularly in the company's Aviation and Bell segments," analyst Jason Gursky wrote in a Wednesday note. Current wait lists for new aircraft stretch to more than two years, he noted — resulting in up to 360% backlog growth for Textron since 2019. To be sure, he said that Textron's industrial segment does not have much "connective tissue" across its various assets, which include automotive, aerospace and leisure. A rise in military spending should also create tailwinds for Textron's defense-oriented Bell and Systems segment, added the analyst.

Technicians assemble a General Electric Co. CFM56-7B jet engine at the company's Aviation Assembly & Test facility in Research Triangle Park in Durham, North Carolina. A recovery in air travel is lifting sales and repairs at the aircraft engine units of General Electric and Raytheon Technologies as Boeing and Airbus scramble to increase their production rates of new planes. The unit makes engines for Boeing's 737 Max planes and Airbus' A320 family of narrow-body aircraft. Raytheon's Pratt & Whitney engine unit sales increased 15% from a year earlier to $5.23 billion. The improvements in those companies come as Airbus and Boeing are trying to increase their output of new planes for airlines.
SpaceX rolled out aviation-specific Starlink satellite internet service on Tuesday, with Elon Musk's company looking to expand further into the inflight WiFi market. Deliveries to aviation customers are scheduled to "start in mid-2023," the company said, and reservations require a $5,000 initial payment. SpaceX said it is seeking Federal Aviation Administration certificates for a variety of aircraft, most of which are typically owned and operated as private jets. As for the quality of the service, SpaceX says Starlink aviation customers can expect speeds up to 350 Megabits per second, "enabling all passengers to access streaming-capable internet at the same time." But the company's aviation service does not require a long-term contract, with SpaceX saying "all plans include unlimited data" and the "hardware is under warranty for as long as you subscribe to the service."
