Two Colombian nationals are facing extradition to the U.S. for their alleged role in a human smuggling operation that resulted in the disappearance at sea of dozens of migrants. Rivera and Linero were arrested by Colombian authorities in coordination with the U.S. as part of Joint Task Force Alpha. Joint Task Force Alpha was started in 2021 with a focus on migrant smuggling through Central America and Mexico. Mandatory minimum sentences for migrant smuggling as a stand-alone offense are relatively low compared to similar offenses like drug smuggling, but these aggravating factors allow prosecutors to seek harsher punishments. While Joint Task Force Alpha was started by the Biden administration, analysts believe it is likely to continue or even expand under the incoming Trump administration.

Doha, Qatar CNN —Nine years ago, the UN established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which included ending poverty and hunger. The G20 Leaders’ Summit in November marked the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative aiming to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2030, aligning with the SDGs. CNN: Why was there a need to launch the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty? We need more open debate and experience-sharing among countries like Colombia, Brazil, and Mali, alongside UN organizations like the World Food Programme. This means that countries joining together, by fighting food waste and engaging with the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, I think we can create a better world by 2030.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he wants ally Kari Lake to serve as the next director of the Voice of America, a federal network that's part of the U.S. Agency for Global Media. VOA representatives did not immediately respond to questions about the processes for nominating and approving a new director, as well as what Trump's announcement could mean for the employment of the current director, Michael Abramowitz. Lake taunted journalists as being "fake news," saying during the Republican National Convention that they have "worn out your welcome." Trump previously faced criticism for his 2020 appointment of Michael Pack to head the U.S. Agency for Global Media. The president-elect's post about Lake came alongside a handful of other administration announcements on Truth Social.

CNN —A male humpback whale has made an extraordinary journey from South America to Africa — traveling more than 13,046 kilometers (8,106 miles) — the longest migration recorded for a single whale, a new study found. Humpback whales typically return to specific breeding locations each year because whale populations tend to be geographically distinct. The future of migrationWhaling in the 20th century killed nearly 95% to 99% of the humpback whale population in the Indian Ocean, according to Cheeseman. As a result, little information remains about the behavior and lives of humpback whales in that region. However, if exceptions to standard migratory patterns continue, Cheeseman suggests that humpback whales may adopt behaviors from other populations.

A humpback whale has stunned scientists with a journey that spanned three oceans and more than 8,000 miles, setting the record for the longest known migration between breeding grounds. “Changing climatic and ocean conditions could be driving these migrations to new breeding grounds. Some whale migration routes are known to exceed 5,000 miles between feeding and breeding grounds, and humpback whales in particular have some of the longest migrations of any mammal. The research provided “photographic evidence that confirmed humpback whales switch between breeding grounds,” he said in a telephone interview Wednesday. The organization claims that a humpback whale’s tail is so unique that there is a “97% to 99%” success rate for matching photos submitted for the species.

The water security of the millions of people who live in the foothills of the Andes is also at risk. To date, Aucca Chutas says the initiative has planted more than 10 million trees across the region, with the help of thousands of indigenous families. Constantino Aucca Chutas walks up a mountain with members of the local community to plant trees. In previous years, the community has planted as many as 100,000 trees in a single day, using a process of propagation, where root cuttings are planted. Aucca Chutas says that it is important to only plant local species as they have found that polylepis trees vary between regions and altitudes.

New York CNN —A former Florida-based TD Bank employee was arrested for his alleged role in a massive money-laundering scheme by drug cartels for which the US government previously fined the bank $3 billion. The arrest follows the record fine TD Bank faced in October, after the US Department of Justice said it had “long-term, pervasive, and systemic deficiencies” in its procedures for monitoring transactions. More than 90% of transactions went unmonitored between January 2018 to April 2024, which “enabled three money laundering networks to collectively transfer more than $670 million through TD Bank accounts,” according to a previous legal filing. It’s rare for the government to go after an individual bank employee in this kind of case. In October, TD Bank CEO Bharat Masrani said in a statement: “This is a difficult chapter in our bank’s history.

The show is also one of three ambitious projects released this year reimagining beloved Latin American classics treasured by book lovers for their use of magical realism. In addition to “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” Netflix also recently adapted Juan Rulfo's Mexican novel "Pedro Páramo" into a film. Magical realism is having its TV momentGarcía Márquez, who won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1982, was best known for novels and short stories that use magical realism to blur the lines between fantasy and reality. An important literary tool for many Latin American authors, magical realism allows these writers to both explain sociopolitical realities and the abstract feelings associated with them. How Netflix Made Magic Look Real in ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ The series, which will be released this week, adapts the novel for the screen for the first time. The author always refused, insisting that his novel, in which the real and fantastical converge, could never be rendered onscreen. Built by Netflix from the ground up for the first-ever screen adaptation of the novel, the town has real birds nesting in its trees and dogs wandering its narrow streets. To recreate Macondo, Netflix also relied on museums, documents, researchers and historians. CNN —Australian police seized the country’s largest haul of cocaine aboard a fishing boat that had broken down near the coast of Queensland, arresting 13 people alleged to be part of a drug-smuggling syndicate. Authorities tracked a recreational fishing boat as it traveled out to sea where it allegedly met a mothership in international waters to fetch the cocaine – some 2.34 metric tons with a street value of nearly half a billion dollars. Police seized their chance to board the boat, arresting two men at sea in a joint investigation between federal and local forces. Police found 2.34 metric tons of cocaine wrapped in bales with roped netting around them on a recreational fishing vessel. Among the haul was 225 metric tons of cocaine, 5 tons of which was found aboard a semi-submersible vessel plying a marine trafficking route from Colombia to Australia, according to the Colombian Navy.

This surge means that coffee prices across the board — from fancy beverages made from Arabica beans to robusta-fueled instant coffee — are almost sure to cost more for the everyday consumer. On Wednesday, the global benchmark for arabica coffee — March 2025 arabica coffee futures — ended 4.6% higher on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) at $3.2305 per pound, after hitting their highest level since 1977.
