Here's how police racism worksThat's when I learned there's a right — and a wrong — way to respond to stressful events, whether at home or at work. Twenty-three years later I'm a dad of three, and use the same tactics to respond to 911 calls that I use to handle stressful situations at home. Later in the day, I might find myself in a stressful situation. Today, I use the same approach to prepare for public speaking, which is sometimes part of my job.

Though my husband didn't want kids, he also never pushed me either way, which I'm grateful for. It mostly consists of other childless couples (or couples with grown-up children), surfers, business owners and freelancers, and expats from countries like Germany, Poland, France, Venezuela, and Spain. Related storiesI started questioning things after a couple we know had a babyRecently, though, our perfectly crafted child-free lifestyle has been turned upside down. Will we regret our decision to live on our own terms without the chaos and beauty of raising a child? I'm picturing my husband and me — all shriveled up and gray — sitting at an empty dinner table, just the two of us.

This type of jaw pain was debilitating, but I hadn't learned anything about treating it in dental school. AdvertisementSince then, I've learned a lot about jaw health — including that seemingly harmless things can really impact your jaw. Here are five common things you should avoid if you want to foster good jaw health in yourself and your kids. Chewing on gum or other items is like doing that for your jaw and can lead to overuse injuries. Jaw health and tongue position can play a huge role in overall health.

I also asked my father to share his experiences growing upMy father grew up in Ghana, and his own father was only a kid at the time. We hugged, and my father told me he was proud of me, which I never heard growing up.

This week, a reader's car was damaged when their friend drove it with the parking brake engaged. When he finally finished, my best friend did me a huge favor by driving from Portland to Seattle to bring me my car. While these feelings are perfectly natural, allowing them to ruin your relationship with your best friend would be unfair to you both. Knowing that your best friend "can barely afford rent" and still expecting her to repay you for the car parts is the wrong choice. But even if it isn't, I hope you don't lose your best friend over a single space-out.

A small group of people, including five journalists, witnessed the execution of convicted murderer Kenneth Eugene Smith. The Angolite, the Louisiana State Penitentiary’s inmate-run news magazine, published photos revealing the seared flesh of a man who’d died in the chair. Soon after Prejean’s execution, the Louisiana legislature passed laws mandating lethal injections for executions. Around the time I witnessed Prejean’s execution, roughly 80% of Americans said they approved of the death penalty, according to a Gallup poll. Prejean, who was convicted and executed for the murder of Donald Cleveland, a Louisiana state trooper, was 17 at the time of the murder.

“Threats to exterminate the Jews are the result of the work of Russian state propaganda, which for decades cultivated feelings of hatred towards other peoples among Russians,” he noted. Kadyrov has also provided footsoldiers for Russia’s war in Ukraine. The Gaza war adds one more match to the fire. Additionally, Russia’s war in Ukraine has impacted Dagestan heavily, with significant casualties. But an anti-Jewish riot in the southern region of Dagestan shows how quickly that model can backfire, particularly for those trapped inside the echo of Russian state propaganda.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has reorganized the company into 3 core units: entertainment, ESPN, and parks. Parks' growing prominence comes as the company faces looming decisions over Iger's CEO. Travel bans "dramatically impacted" results for Disney Parks during the intense early years of the coronavirus pandemic, Heger noted, adding that parks are now generating more revenue and operating profit than they did in pre-COVID times. The parks' success is "helping to offset" losses from Disney's "DTC," or direct-to-consumer streaming business, Heger added. Josh D'Amaro, the current chairman for Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, would be a likely figure appearing on any shortlist of CEO contenders.

How to practice progressive muscle relaxation
  + stars: | 2023-06-11 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Progressive muscle relaxation is a powerful mind-body relaxation technique that can help you melt away that tension and relieve the stress and anxiety that started it. Progressive muscle relaxation has been shown in numerous studies to help relieve anxiety and stress, and facilitate sleep for those who are highly stressed, including Covid-19 patients and burn victims. This feature makes progressive muscle relaxation an accessible mind-body relaxation practice for anyone, even kids, who might struggle with the inactive aspect of meditation or visualization practices. During this practice, your breath serves as the link between your mind and body, coordinating with each muscle contraction and release. Inhale as you flex your wrists, pointing your fingers downward so that you feel your forearm muscles contract.

We've also been happily married to each other for 35 years, so we know a thing or two about how to build a successful, long-lasting relationship. Still, there is one thing we've learned to never ever do: fight when we are emotionally flooded. These behaviors can harm both your partner's trust in you and the foundations of your relationship.
Turkey Faces Financial Reckoning After Election

Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan will face opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the second round of the presidential election on May 28 after neither won Sunday’s first round. WSJ’s Jared Malsin explains what’s at stake. Photo: Jeff J Mitchell/Getty ImagesThe winner of this month’s Turkish presidential election will have to reckon with a dangerously lopsided economy that investors and economists say has veered close to the edge of financial stability. Turkey will hold a runoff election on May 28 after neither President Recep Tayyip Erdogan nor opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu secured the 50% of the vote required to clench the presidency. Mr. Erdogan emerged with a convincing lead in the first round, a surprise after he trailed in polls in the days before Sunday’s vote.
And not only one’s children: I fear that the current situation on the subways may foster racial bigotry more broadly. I’ve heard this past week that we should tolerate the reality that these men make us “uncomfortable” on the subway. New Yorkers these days have read stories of people being pushed onto the tracks or stabbed by troubled individuals in subway stations. I am going to venture an idea that may be unpopular: Jordan Neely, in all of his innocence, did deserve restraint. The system needs to help both the Jordan Neelys and the rest of us.
