A convicted identity thief who admitted to posing as a nurse in Virginia nearly a decade ago is accused of impersonating nurses in at least two hospitals in Southern California this year, authorities said. Porter, who does not have a nursing license, was charged with identity theft, false impersonation and grand theft, the department said. Prior to her arrest in that case, the department said, Porter was in custody over similar allegations linked to a hospital in nearby Santa Clarita, California. During her first five shifts at the hospital, she was under the supervision of a training nurse, the facility said. The hospital added that Porter, who is not named in the hospital's statement, was under the supervision of a nurse and there was no indication of compromised care.

A screengrab from a video shows security cam footage of Davis Moturi prior to allegedly being shot by his neighbor John Sawchak, while Moturi was doing yard work at his home. John Sawchak Hennepin County Sheriff's OfficePolice were first dispatched to the home in October 2023 after Sawchak allegedly made threats involving “disparaging racial comments” at Moturi. Then, a week before the shooting, Sawchak allegedly stood outside the Moturis’ home with a firearm and pointed the gun at Davis through the window, according to prosecutors. On October 23, Sawchak allegedly shot Moturi in the neck from his second-floor window. Yet his arrest has done little to quell renewed tensions between the Minneapolis officers and the community they have sworn to protect and serve.

The alleged shooter, John Sawchak – Moturi’s neighbor – surrendered around 1:24 a.m. Monday, following an hourslong standoff with police, O’Hara said at a news conference early Monday. Sawchak has been charged with attempted murder, felony assault, and stalking and harassment for allegedly shooting Moturi, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said in court filings. By the time of his arrest, Sawchak had a yearslong history of harassing, threatening and attacking his neighbors, with three active warrants against him – including one for threats against Moturi. Earlier this year, I wrote about a friend who was attacked and thrown to the ground on a September afternoon, while she was walking toward Borough Hall in Brooklyn to go to the post office. She was on the phone with her mother when a man, whose erratic behavior she had noticed in the distance, pushed her into the street, leaving her with bruises, a chipped tooth and fear new to her after decades of living in New York. At the time, it did not seem as though the assault might be part of a dark emerging trend. But the incident would presage many others — instances in which women in New York were randomly punched on the street in the middle of the day. A few days before the announcement, a 9-year-old girl standing with her mother was punched in the face by a man at Grand Central Station.
