Slated to become the next leader of Macao, Sam Hou Fai wants to steer China's special administrative region further away from its heavy reliance on gaming and gambling. Formerly Macao's top judge, Sam was elected Macao's next leader in an uncontested vote on Sunday. In the lead-up to his selection, the 62-year-old identified the diversification of Macao as an urgent issue to address. He added he would consider creating public funds to promote the development of emerging industries outside gaming and gambling. However, that reliance backfired during the Covid-19 pandemic when the gambling and gaming industries took major hits from border closures and social distancing policies.

New York City has also seen a surge in bicycling since the pandemic caused many to avoid mass transit and ride shares. And the funding for the Streets Plan — more than $900 million — has already been allocated to DOT. The city streets were designed to maximize vehicle speed rather than to get as many New Yorkers around as efficiently and safely as possible. While New York City streets have generally gotten safer since the city adopted its 'Vision Zero' plan in 2014 to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in 2014, progress hasn't been consistent. By Jonathan AllenNEW YORK (Reuters) - Lawyers representing New Yorkers facing eviction and living in shelters sued New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday to try to force him to comply with new local laws expanding access to rental assistance. The lawsuit by the Legal Aid Society comes after the mayor unsuccessfully vetoed the new laws expanding access to vouchers for low-income New Yorkers. The New York City Council, which had voted to override the mayor's veto last July, will soon join Legal Aid in suing the mayor after making the unusual move last week. More than 36,000 households already receive housing vouchers from the city, according to Adams' office. A spokesperson for the mayor said his office was reviewing the lawsuit and that his administration would focus on working with the city council to build more affordable housing across the city.
