It could be a bad idea to keep a stock solely to skip out on realizing capital gains. The right advice can buy time, reduce tax burdens, or even avoid them altogether without breaking any laws. "So, a tax-loss-harvesting type of trading will take place and then you are reducing your capital gains taxes." This grants them a tax deduction while skipping out on capital gains tax. Even some of our hedge fund managers who get compensation through carried interests of capital gains can defer those capital gains and even avoid them."

While HYSA rates are dropping, they're still far higher than many traditional savings account rates. With the Fed cutting rates for the first time in four years, many are anticipating a decrease in the interest rates on high-yield savings accounts — finding a high-yield savings account with a 5% interest rate is already getting harder. High-yield savings accounts are low-riskOne major reason to keep your money in a high-yield savings account is that it is a low-risk option. Interest rates still beat other savings accountsOne of the best reasons to keep your money in a high-yield savings account is the higher interest rate compared to traditional bank savings accounts. High-yield savings accounts are still ideal for your emergency fundHigh-yield savings accounts are an excellent choice for short-term (up to a year) and medium-term (one to five years) financial goals.

When China finally reopened to tourists in 2023, we got visas and booked a July flight to Beijing via Doha on Qatar Airways, paying about $1,400 total. The link on the Qatar Airways website was broken, but I confirmed online and with friends who had recently traveled to China that I could fill it out upon arrival. At the airport, Qatar Airways disagreed, and when I once again couldn’t get the form to work, we were denied boarding. Qatar Airways mostly refunded the tickets — we received $1,185 — but refused to admit it was wrong. In your situation, your itinerary had you going through Qatar Airways’ hub in Doha, meaning those behind you in line in Jordan were probably headed to dozens of countries, all with their own rules.

CNN —The “Sonic the Hedgehog” movies weren’t particularly good, but they had Jim Carrey and made a lot of money, so inevitably, there’s more. Lacking Carrey to help carry the load, “Knuckles,” spun out of that game-to-screen universe, isn’t just bad, but a next-level degree of bad, starting with the puzzling question of for whom this six-episode Paramount+ series was made. Despite only six half-hour episodes to complete the trek from points A to B, “Knuckles” goes nowhere fast and doesn’t seem to be in much of a hurry to get anywhere. “I do not make jokes,” Knuckles tells Wade. “Knuckles” premieres April 26 on Paramount+.

A former Biden family business associate levied critical but unproven allegations against President Joe Biden in a closed-door House interview Tuesday, resurrecting claims he has lobbed since 2020. He further said he believed the multi-million-dollar business deals secured by Joe Biden’s son and brother only materialized “because Joe Biden was in high office.” He said, “the Biden family business was Joe Biden, period,” and specifically mentioned Joe Biden’s alleged role in a lucrative proposed deal with a Chinese energy conglomerate. “He had two encounters with President Biden in back-to-back days in May of 2017 that seemed extremely casual,” Raskin said. Despite providing information to the FBI, federal prosecutors haven’t cited his materials in the sweeping tax indictment filed against Hunter Biden. The Justice Department has accused Hunter Biden of tax evasion and other financial crimes over many years.

After sweeping the Emmys with the previous iteration of its cast, the Netflix drama looks ready to limp across the finish line unbowed, but slightly bloodied. Splitting the final season into two parts, the first four episodes focus on a pair of relationships in the wake of the divorce that shook the world. On the issue of intent, in last week’s testimony, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump both attempted to shift the blame onto their accountants. First, the judge has already rejected a key route Trump tried to avoid an admission that he intended to defraud the victims. He fined Trump’s lawyers for doing just that. Again, the attorney general wins whether Trump denies it, or whether he doubles down on what the judge has called Trump’s “fantasy world” financial claims. If the past is prologue, Trump likely will continue to deny liability: Blowing smoke is simply in the nature of a narcissist.

CNN —Lionel Messi is widely considered the greatest soccer player in the world, which makes one wonder how extensive access to him and his new team could yield such a boring sports docuseries. Still, that adequately sums up “Messi Meets America,” an Apple TV+ project whose first three episodes have all the heft of a latenight infomercial. Part of that, admittedly, has to do with the way that Messi carefully protects his image, exhibiting a knack for speaking very earnestly in classic sports cliches. “Can one guy make that big of a difference?” Miami Herald sportswriter Michelle Kaufman asks early on. “Messi Meets America” premieres October 11 on Apple TV+.

CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday rejected efforts by former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and ex-Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark to avoid arrest if they fail to turn themselves in by Friday’s deadline in the Georgia election subversion case. US District Judge Steve Jones declined the emergency requests by Meadows and Clark, who are both trying to move Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ prosecution to federal court. Meadows argued he should be allowed to avoid processing in the Fulton County election subversion case that has been brought against former President Donald Trump and 18 others ahead of a hearing scheduled Monday. Such rulings would require state court proceedings for entire case – for all the defendants – to automatically be paused and moved to federal court, Clark argued in court filings earlier this week. She submitted to the federal court a state court ruling during those proceedings that described the special grand jury as criminal in nature.

The fifth season of Netflix’s superb, ambitious “The Crown” covers the years from 1988 to early 1997, arguably the nadir of England’s modern monarchy. “The Crown” sets up series creator Peter Morgan to be a 21st- century Shakespeare for the Second Elizabethan era. “The Crown” sets up series creator Peter Morgan to be a 21st-century Shakespeare for the Second Elizabethan era. His retellings of royal life are no more accurate than “Richard II” or “Henry V,” making royal whining all these years later all the sillier. “The Crown” even finds ways to make Charles a sympathetic figure in the divorce, no small feat.
‘Spirited’ Review: A Caterwauling ‘Christmas Carol’

Will Ferrell was part of a woeful musical-comedy misadventure in 2005, when he played a supporting role in the big-screen version of Broadway’s “The Producers,” one of those movies that seemed to be forgotten the week after it opened. Now Mr. Ferrell is taking his chances again: At age 55, he fancies himself a Broadway baby. When a big star wants to do a musical, he’ll rarely be dissuaded. Make that two stars: Ryan Reynolds , who like Mr. Ferrell has a singing voice that can charitably be described as thin and dances in a way that suggests great effort, has joined him in woofing and warbling in the umpteenth adaptation of “A Christmas Carol .” “Spirited” is in theaters this week ahead of its streaming release Nov. 18 on Apple TV+, but nothing in the film supports the adjectival promise of the title. Fans of Mr. Ferrell and Mr. Reynolds have likely never seen them in anything this earnest and tacky before, and are liable to feel somewhere between betrayed and stunned.
Steve Nash Is Gone, and the Brooklyn Nets Reboot. Again.
  + stars: | 2022-11-02 | by ( Jason Gay | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Whatever is wrong with the Brooklyn Nets, and there is plenty— disaster doesn’t feel like an adequate rendering for this chronically chaotic professional basketball outfit, 2-5 entering Tuesday’s play—it is not principally the doing of Steve Nash. But because these are impatient times, and a scapegoat must be offered, and players are expensive and/or immovable, it is Nash on his way out of town after a Tuesday uncoupling charitably rebranded as a parting of the ways. Surely Nash, a former two-time NBA MVP known for his court vision, sensed it was coming. The job he took at the beginning of the 2020-21 season bears no resemblance to the shamble to be inherited by Brooklyn’s next hire, perhaps Ime Udoka—yes, that’s right, the Nets are reportedly interested in the head coach the Boston Celtics suspended in September for an entire season for what was murkily described as “violations of team policies.” Confronting crisis with crisis! You couldn’t make this team up if you tried.
This is the daily notebook of Mike Santoli, CNBC's senior markets commentator, with ideas about trends, stocks and market statistics. There has been no net downside since June 16 even with yields higher, earnings expectations slipping and recession anticipation becoming entrenched. And the S & P has not even bounced back to Friday morning's high at this point, so it could be simply a bit more noisy, untrustworthy action. This market has many issues, but the valuation of the typical stock is no longer one of the top ones. Here we see year-ahead P/E ratios for the S & P 500, equal-weighted S & P 500 (back near late-2018 lows) and S & P 600 Small Cap (near Covid crash low).
How Italy could tip into a tailspin

Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, speaks during a rally in Duomo square ahead of the Sept. 25 snap election, in Milan, Italy, September 11, 2022. Italy will probably muddle through under Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy, which opinion polls suggest will be the largest party after this Sunday’s election. Nobody wants Italy to go into a tailspin and drag down countries such as France and Spain, which also have high levels of sovereign debt. She might think the EU would still keep financial support flowing to Italy as it wouldn’t have the guts for a confrontation. But if the ECB then refused to buy Italian debt, and if neither side blinked, there would be a blow-up.
