Fortesa Latifi went back to working only one week after giving birth and felt intensely guilty. AdvertisementI didn't want to soak up every minute of 'leave'As a contractor and freelance writer, my maternity leave wasn't a given. Allison Venditti, the founder of Moms at Work, an organization for working moms, said leaving maternity leave early isn't uncommon. "The most important thing, I think, is for people to have choice — choice in how they approach work and family, choice to go back to work early, choice to take more time off," Venditti said. We deserve federally mandated maternity leave; it's truly barbaric that we are one of only six countries without guaranteed paid maternity leave.

The nurse manager came to interview me for a job while I was still admitted. The last thing I expected was to host a job interview from my hospital bed. To the Editor:Re “Mothers Are Told That Natural Childbirth Is Best. It Isn’t,” by Michelle Goldberg (“Don’t Tell My Friends, But …” series, Aug. 4):Ms. Goldberg needs to take a breath. The natural birth movement changed the balance of power for women. Women still need C-sections. To associate the natural birth movement with anti-vaxxers is a real disservice to the feminist pioneers who worked so hard to put women back in charge of childbirth.

Less discussed, however, is a parallel crisis in corporate America: a wave of aging business leaders who refuse to step aside. The average retirement age is similarly increasing: to 62 in 2024 from 57 in 1991. Using public data from 1992 to 2018, they assessed the relationship between a CEO's age and their "managerial ability," as measured by how they turned company resources into revenue and profit. "A 10% increase in CEO age is associated with a 1.9% decrease in managerial ability," they wrote. And older workers, both above and below the traditional retirement age, already face unwarranted discrimination in the workplace.

The natural-parenting movement, like the anti-vaccine movement, relies on our forgetfulness about what life was like before the innovations that it denounces. Also like the anti-vaccine movement, the natural-parenting movement is a reaction to very real failures in our medical system, which has more than earned people’s distrust. Natural parenting has since been thoroughly secularized, but it still preaches something akin to spiritual transcendence through female sacrifice. Even if you distrust the natural-parenting movement, its pressures are hard to escape. If the natural-parenting movement really cared about children, it would do some introspection about how often it makes their parents miserable.

In fact, over the course of a pregnancy, creating and carrying a little one takes 49,753 dietary calories — the equivalent of 164 Snickers candy bars, said Dr. Dustin Marshall, a coauthor of the study published May 16 in the journal Science. You can think of it as an additional substantial snack or mini meal in your day around the second trimester, Mokari said. “That’s pretty monumental.”What to eatHow you eat will depend on your pregnancy, Mokari said. Get some sleepThis study also suggests that sleep is probably especially important during pregnancy, Feinberg said. “If you feel tired, go to sleep, and really understand that you’re not being a wimp, that you’re exhausted in pregnancy,” Feinberg said.

In 2016, when I was seven months pregnant and my oldest son was 6, we moved to the Netherlands for my husband's work. During my time there, I noticed several differences between raising a family in the Netherlands and in the United States. CNN —What should a comedian do when a baby cradled in its mother’s arms starts making noises in the middle of a set? American comedian Arj Barker was faced with that awkward situation during a show in Australia on Saturday night at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Barker has repeatedly defended his decision to ask Trish Faranda and her baby, Clara, to leave the event, which specified a minimum age of 15 for attendees. “All I could see was a woman likely holding a baby – the breastfeeding was never part of it. A witness who spoke with Nine News said a few people in the crowd heckled the mother to leave.

A nanny share is when two or more families have one nanny taking care of their kids. Finally, even though you save money compared to a private nanny, shares still tend to be more expensive than larger childcare environments. There are a lot of logisticsYou have flexibility with a nanny share, but that also means you have to sort through logistics. My family loves having a nanny shareAs with most decisions, there are pros and cons to nanny shares. Since we all have different preferences and priorities, whether to move forward with a nanny share will depend on how you personally weigh the pros and cons.

In a municipal building in the heart of the alpine city of Bolzano, Stefano Baldo clocked out of work early for his breastfeeding break. “It’s clear I don’t breastfeed,” Mr. Baldo, a 38-year-old transportation administrator, said in his office decorated with pictures of his wife and six children. But with his wife home with a newborn, one of the parents was entitled by law to take the time, and he needed to pick up the kids. But the Alto Adige-South Tyrol area and its capital, Bolzano, more than any other part of the country, bucked the trend and emerged as a parallel procreation universe for Italy, with its birthrate holding steady over decades. The reason, experts say, is that the provincial government has over time developed a thick network of family-friendly benefits, going far beyond the one-off bonuses for babies that the national government offers.

When Wafaa al-Kurd was nearly due to give birth, she said, she weighed less than she did before becoming pregnant and was surviving on rice and artificial juice. She gave birth to a girl weighing nearly six pounds, named Tayma, just over two weeks ago, she said. Since then, her husband has spent his days scouring markets in northern Gaza, where the family lives, trying to find enough food for his wife to breastfeed and keep Tayma alive. Nearly 60,000 pregnant women in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition, dehydration and lack of proper health care, according to the Gaza health ministry. In a statement on Friday, the ministry said that about 5,000 women in Gaza were giving birth every month in “harsh, unsafe and unhealthy conditions as a result of bombardment and displacement.”The ministry added that about 9,000 women, including thousands of mothers and pregnant women, had been killed since Israel’s bombardment and invasion began in early October.

What about diabetes, cancer, thyroid disease, high blood pressure or heart disease? Some of the questions might seem unexpected to those who don’t write about brain health. However, my risk of developing vascular dementia, the second most common type after Alzheimer’s disease, is elevated. "Such spikes cause brain inflammation, disrupt brain metabolism and increase shrinkage of the thinking part of the brain," Isaacson said. The National Institute on Aging currently supports nearly 500 active clinical trials on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Google searches for "tongue tie release" have been climbing since 2004, reaching an all-time high in 2023. Oftentimes, infants are evaluated for a tongue tie after a nursing parent reports pain or other feeding difficulties. "Ultimately, the decision of whether to proceed with a tongue tie revision should be made on a case-by-case basis, in consultation with a healthcare professional who understands your child's individual needs," he said.
