Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

Read previewAs Amazon's Prime Day approaches, one delivery driver in Texas has a strategy for handling the coming avalanche of packages. Flex workers, meanwhile, are independent contractors who are paid per shift (or "block," as the workers call them) and use their own cars to work. Some Amazon delivery workers said they peed in bottles as they faced pressure to complete their routes, BI reported in 2018. "Amazon Flex delivery partners have the freedom to take breaks and run errands during their delivery window specified in-app," Branden Baribeau, an Amazon spokesperson, told BI. The actress Kara Young stood surrounded by admirers inside David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center around 1 a.m. on Monday morning, fielding a swarm of well-wishers after winning her first Tony Award, for featured actress in the comedy “Purlie Victorious.” Her older brother hovered close by and periodically fanned out the train of her lime chiffon dress. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the 39-year-old playwright who penned the night’s best play revival, the searing family drama “Appropriate” — and a fellow first-time Tony winner — was next in line to compliment Ms. Young and her gown from the designer Bibhu Mohapatra. “This is a forever iconic Tonys look,” Mr. Jacobs-Jenkins told the actress. “When we’re like 70 years old, they’re going to show you in this.”

When Zines Walked the Earth

Before the internet, before the spicy comments sections on Instagram and Twitter or the outré subcultures on TikTok, like-minded strangers connected through zines. The curators of “Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines” at the Brooklyn Museum, the art historians Branden Joseph and Drew Sawyer, define them as low-budget, limited-circulation publications (short for “magazine” or “fanzine”) that are not political pamphlets or countercultural newspapers. The show’s territory starts in 1969, coinciding with the widening availability of photocopy machines, and runs to the present. The selection of zines, posters, films, videos, paintings, garments and other curios is pretty great, and you see many repeat visitors (like myself) wandering the galleries. There is an enormous amount of material to take in.

The warnings about the old brick building on Main Street just kept coming. There was an engineer’s report in February about a compromised wall. Over months, assessments were written, work permits were issued and some repairs were made. Still, as alarm grew and complaints mounted, people were allowed to remain in their apartments at 324 Main Street in Davenport, Iowa, a city of 100,000 residents situated about halfway between Des Moines and Chicago. But last week, a day after that 911 call, a section of the downtown building cleaved off and fell into a parking lot.

The LatestThe police in Davenport, Iowa, said on Monday that they had found the bodies of all three men who had been missing since a section of a downtown apartment building collapsed last week. City officials said on Sunday that one of the men, Branden Colvin Sr., a resident who had returned home shortly before the building fell on May 28, had been found dead. On Monday, they said the bodies of the remaining two — Ryan Hitchcock and Daniel Prien — had also been found in the rubble. No one else is known to have died in the incident, and the authorities said on Monday that they were not aware of any other people who were still unaccounted for. The Davenport police chief, Jeffery Bladel, said that city and state agencies were investigating the collapse.

The body of one of three men missing after the partial collapse of an apartment building in Davenport, Iowa, has been recovered a week after a section of the six-story structure collapsed, a spokeswoman for the city said on Sunday. The spokeswoman, Sarah Ott, said in an email that the body of Branden Colvin Sr., 42, was found on Saturday. He is the first person confirmed to have died in the collapse. Two other men — Ryan Hitchcock, 51, and Daniel Prien, 60 — are still missing since part of the building came crashing down on May 28. The city government said in a statement on Thursday that it believed there was “high probability” that the three men could have been “home at the time of the collapse” and that “their apartments were located in the collapse zone.”

School reunions, like work and family ones, are fertile ground for dramatists, offering an excuse to gather disparate characters with a catalog of ready-made conflicts. (There’s always someone who got dumped, dissed or disowned x years ago.) Branden Jacobs-Jenkins juggles all of these elements in “The Comeuppance,” which opened Monday at the Signature Theater. It’s an odd sensation to side with Death, but we want to know these people, too. Each has struggled to achieve maturity or happiness or just a sense of belonging — a problem that was already evident in high school when they bonded as members of MERGE, a “multiethnic reject group” with a problematic extra E.

There, in 1815, she is presumed to be property. But, per Butler, matters are not that simple either. As every narrative corner reveals another electrifying twist, “Kindred” has to be addressed in broad terms, lest spoilers come back to haunt the reviewer. Suffice to say that “Kindred” the book has been included in high-school and college curricula and was made into a graphic novel of 2017. The playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has done the new adaptation and serves as showrunner ( Janicza Bravo of “Lemon” and “Zola” directed the arresting pilot), and a few tweaks have been made to the original story.

Authorities now say that a Mississippi woman who fatally shot two police officers was killed by one of the officers who returned fire during a shootout. But on Friday, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety released additional details. As Estorffe approached the vehicle, Anderson and Estorffe exchanged rounds resulting in fatal injuries to both individuals," the release stated. Anderson told the officers that she thought she was being followed by a person in a white pick-up truck. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety has not said what sparked the shooting.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations did not immediately respond to a question about the juvenile's condition. One of the officers was pronounced dead at the scene, but the other died after initially being injured, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations said. Two officers were killed at a local Motel 6 after responding to a call in Bay St. Louis, Miss. Tate Reeves said he was "heartbroken" by the loss and was praying for the families as well as the "entire Bay St. Louis community."
