And these designers aren’t using just any old jet — they’re purposefully picking Whitby jet, which is widely considered the gold standard of jewelry-ready jet. And “Whitby jet is definitely in the running for the best jet in the world,” explained Steele, who also co-owns Ebor Jetworks, an historic jet workshop and retail shop in the town. Whitby jet is renowned for being pitch-black in color and tough in temperament. Generally speaking, Whitby jet won’t crack or fade over time, like less hearty, no-name jets are wont to do. “There’s not enough jet out there and you can’t buy big pieces of jet” said Steele.

Earl Washington loves wood. He loves maple wood from Wisconsin and boxwood from Turkey. But most of all he loves carving it. “If I’m looking at your face when I’m talking to you, I’m literally looking at how I’m going to carve your eyes and carve your nose on a piece of wood,” he said in an interview. To profitably sell woodblocks — which can be an oddity in the art market — Washington decided he also needed myth.

At its former headquarters in eastern Pennsylvania, Air Products had a neatly manicured lawn and boxwood hedges. But when the industrial gases company moved to nearby Allentown recently and erected a new office building, it tried something different. Rather than plant grass that would need constant watering, mowing and fertilizing, it turned to native plants that pretty much took care of themselves. “One plant had yellow finches all around it,” said Patrick J. Garay, vice president of strategic projects at Air Products. Apps calculate the carbon footprint of landscapes in much the same way that buildings are monitored for greenhouse gas emissions.

WHEN GLEN GARDNER, a landscape designer in Charleston, S.C., bought his house in town, his outdoor area was just 30 feet by 60 feet, much of it paved in concrete. Rejecting the idea of an open lawn, he transformed it into four interconnected garden spaces—a terrace room, a parterre, a dining area and a pool. Mr. Gardner defined a rectangular grassy space, ideal for dinner parties, with three-foot-tall Japanese yew hedges. He built a brick wall, now veiled in fig vine, to set off plantings of boxwood hedges in a traditional parterre. For further privacy, he hid a neighbor’s house with a towering holly hedge.
His committee oversees surface transportation, and he loves trains, just like "Amtrak Joe." "Then they named it after Joe Biden, and my staff was so ticked off. Sen. Tom Carper and Chris Coons speak to reporters after meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House in February, 2021. As he left, "Tell Joe Biden we love him," the ticket counter attendant said.
