Memecoins have seen some of the biggest gains in the postelection crypto rally, but market leadership could soon flip to more "serious" tokens. "We don't expect the rally to resemble the '17 or '21 bull markets and would fade the rally for 99% of tokens in circulation with no intrinsic value," Shah said in a note this week. "We expect token prices to diverge in the near term as BTC and cash flow-generating tokens that power networks outperform meme tokens." "These tokens power blockchain operating systems, similar to Microsoft Windows, that enable developers to build applications like decentralized exchanges and Web3 platforms on top of them, creating networks with value." Avalanche's AVAX token has gained 36%, and the tokens tied to Uniswap and Polygon have gained 23% and 25%, respectively.

The investment manager said Wednesday that its USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund (BUIDL) is now available to investors on the Aptos; Arbitrum; Avalanche; OP Mainnet, formerly known as Optimism; and Polygon blockchains. The BUIDL fund, which BlackRock debuted two months after iShares Bitcoin Trust, its popular bitcoin exchange-traded fund, gives investors an opportunity to earn U.S. dollar yields through a blockchain-based vehicle. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission appears to have given the green light for exchange-traded funds that hold ether , the world's second-largest cryptocurrency. It approved rule changes for exchanges to list ether funds in May. Some of the companies that have been vying to launch ether funds include massive asset managers such as BlackRock, Fidelity and VanEck. The ether ETFs come about six months after the launch of bitcoin ETFs, which saw some of the most successful debuts in the industry's history. The ether funds are not expected to be as popular as the bitcoin funds, in part because the total market for ether is roughly one-fourth the size of the leading cryptocurrencies.

Donald Trump was not always a crypto supporter, but he's recently voiced strong support for the industry. Political spending by the industry has made crypto an election issue for both parties, a source told BI. The former president's pro-crypto stance is making bitcoin a "Trump trade," Bernstein said. Binance is finding 300,000 fake addresses every week, mainly on Ethereum and Bitcoin networks. AdvertisementAs crypto thieves find more creative ways to trick people, so do those trying to crack down on them. Binance, a major crypto exchange, told Business Insider that it has developed an algorithm to spot fake crypto addresses — used in so-called "address poisoning" scams. According to Binance, the company's algorithm is detecting some 300,000 fake addresses every week, mostly on Ethereum and Bitcoin networks. The FBI warns that services offering to return money to the victims of crypto scams might actually also be scams themselves.

Read previewA cryptocurrency trader reportedly lost tens of millions of dollars in a so-called "address poisoning" scam. Because blockchains are public, it's easy for scammers to find people's crypto addresses and send out spoof transactions to phish for victims. Related storiesTrezor, another crypto trading platform, recommends double-checking every address before sending a transaction and never copying an address from transaction history when transferring funds to avoid address scams. Sending a small test transaction before making a large transfer is also an effective method of verifying the address, the company says. Magic Eden coders gathered in an Airbnb in San Jose, California, to hack in preparation for the so-called bitcoin halving. Their goal was to spend a week hacking to prepare for the so-called bitcoin halving — an event that is baked into the chain's code and helps to stave off inflation through programmatic monetary policy. watch nowTechnically speaking, runes just enables asset issuance of fungible tokens on bitcoin's base chain. The reason this is significant to developers is because of its efficiency relative to existing BRC-20 tokens, bitcoin's widely-used fungible token standard that has already received a ton of traction. Relative to bitcoin , the initial price action following the upgrade is even weaker historically, with ether underperforming 80% of the time in the first 20 days, Saunders added. Saunders warned, however, that the trading environment for crypto is different today than it was during previous Ethereum network upgrades. The scalability problem Dencun follows the "Shapella" upgrade from almost a year ago, which allowed investors to withdraw their staked ether from the network for the first time. This upgrade is focused on the longer-term goal of enhancing Ethereum's ability to handle more activity and transactions as the network grows. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Dec 1(Reuters) - The Ethereum blockchain's historical greenhouse gas emissions before a major software upgrade last year were equivalent to the yearly emissions of Honduras, a University of Cambridge study showed on Friday. From its launch in 2015 until the Merge, Ethereum's greenhouse gas emissions totalled 27.5 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e), the study showed. Its current yearly emissions are around 2.8 kilotonnes carbon dioxide equivalent, the study found - around the same as five round-trip flights from London to New York. It is generally thought that blockchain is "a highly emitting technology," said Anna Lerner, executive director at the Ethereum Climate Platform, an organisation that seeks to use blockchain tech to accelerate climate finance. The annual emissions of Bitcoin, the largest blockchain and cryptocurrency, are therefore roughly equivalent to those of Cambodia in 2020, according to Climate Watch.

Explainer: Crypto's role in terrorist financing

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Cryptocurrency's role in terrorist financing and funding militant groups has come under renewed scrutiny following a deadly attack in Israel by Palestinian militant group Hamas. HOW MUCH CRYPTO IS USED IN TERRORIST FINANCING? The FATF said this year that crypto presents "increasing terrorist financing risks", but that the "vast majority" of terrorist financing still uses regular money. Chainalysis said that terrorist financing "represents a small fraction of the less than 1% of the entire crypto market occupied by illicit activity". Terrorist financing is a small part of the illicit uses of crypto, which include scams, ransomware and theft.

Tokenizing real-world assets on a blockchain is one of the buzziest topics of the year, and this time it isn't just coming from financial incumbents like Citi, JPMorgan and Northern Trust, it's coming from crypto native players, too. As the world of crypto becomes more connected to the broader financial market, the appetite for tokenizing real-world assets, or RWA, is coming from smaller participants as well. Kraken Ventures' Stuti Pandey said since tokenization's last hype cycle, RWAs have benefited from changes in economics, technology and credibility. "Over the past few years, interest rates have been very depressed and that has favored very high growth, high risk assets," she said. Now that rates are down, it's actually these real-world assets that have interesting yield."
