I was thrilled when the show took home the awards for best original score and best book. Too often we approach pivotal moments like this week’s debate between President Biden and Donald Trump like drama critics. We’re picking a president, not “best actor.”I am the only person to have debated both men (Mr. Trump in 2016 and, in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary race, Senator Biden). I know the excruciating pressure of walking onto that stage and that it is nearly impossible to focus on substance when Mr. Trump is involved. It’s nearly impossible to identify what his arguments even are.

In order to avoid economic catastrophe, he argued, people should save more money and work longer. The current Social Security retirement age is 67, but most Americans depart the workforce earlier than that. For one, many older people cannot work because of a disability or because they need to care for someone else with a disability. And some older workers have heard all the corporate buzzwords and blather before, so they don't buy into management's sloganeering, rendering them "difficult." He's asking people who have not yet retired to work longer than their elders did and to save even more money, without changing the systematic barriers to either.

One of Button's studies looked at "bridge jobs , " part-time jobs in administration or retail that many people use to ease into retirement and cushion their finances. The same year, Scripps Medical Clinic in San Diego was ordered to pay $6.9 million for setting a mandatory retirement age for physicians of 70, regardless of the doctors' interest or abilities. And some older workers have heard all the corporate buzzwords and blather before, so they don't buy into management's sloganeering, rendering them "difficult."

At law school, we learned about "proximate cause," one of the few valuable concepts you can take from three years of drudgery. But was that the proximate cause? No, the real proximate cause, the one that's really at fault, was the February unemployment report, which came out on March 8. At the time, many thought the proximate cause of Nvidia's pirouette was the performance of two chipmaker peers. Surely those two updates couldn't be the proximate cause of the peak of Nvidia, right?

Trump's new object of hatred is the surface state — the state itself. The attack on the surface state began, of course, on January 6, when a violent mob, assembled and encouraged by Trump, descended on the Capitol to overturn a presidential election. Except that is true only when one evaluates the former president’s pronouncements individually. Thus, the route to defeating Mr. Trump’s “my words are meaningless” defense is to assemble them into their coherent and sinisterly subversive whole meaning. To the Editor:Michael Wolff’s depiction of Donald Trump’s language and thinking as disordered rings true after years of hearing and reading the former president’s communications. Just look at them: Kirsten, blondly beautiful with a tolerant smile and a quick riposte; Joe, curly-haired cute but too arrogant to grasp that he’ll have to up his game to win this woman. It can’t be me; you don’t know me.”This is the addiction-canon classic “Days of Wine and Roses,” though, so some of us already know them. In Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel’s jazzy, aching musical based on the teleplay and the film, Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James are an awfully glamorous Kirsten and Joe — O’Hara, in exquisite voice, singing 14 of the show’s 18 numbers, seven of them solos. Directed in its world premiere by Michael Greif for Atlantic Theater Company, this “Days of Wine and Roses” fills the old Gothic Revival parish house that is the Linda Gross Theater with glorious sound.
