During his travels, the professional cyclist has braved brutal headwinds, extreme temperatures, dangerous traffic and even dusted himself off after a run-in with a kangaroo. That’s all while cycling up to 17 or 18 hours a day, stopping only to sleep, eat and mentally reset before doing it all again. “Rainy days, big, long headwind days – I think mentally they’re probably the most challenging,” says Morton. Reminding yourself that you’re just on a bike ride becomes very important.”This, however, is far from any normal bike ride. Morton has had to negotiate large trucks on his cycle around Australia.

The beach is more about broken glass from generations of illicit parties than sand. The roar and squeal of a nearby railway locomotive compete with the birdsong. The wind carries a sweet chemical scent from a cooking oil processing plant to the west. But amid all this blight peeks out a most surprising sight: familiar yellow signs sporting the beaver logo of Parks Canada. In a country with national parks set amid majestic mountains and vast expanses of wilderness, this unprepossessing stretch of land in Windsor, Ontario, is set to become part of Canada’s newest national park.

Just last year, Brad Herman, a longtime behind-the-scenes aide to celebrities, drew praise from the family of Cindy Birdsong, an ailing former member of the Supremes. He was credited with helping to rescue her from what they described as a friend’s undue influence over her care and finances. But now, Mr. Herman has been named in a petition brought by Ms. Birdsong’s son, who is accusing him in court papers of financial elder abuse and misappropriation of her money. The son, Charles Hewlett, who has been appointed the conservator of his mother’s affairs, is seeking damages and the return of what his petition describes as missing funds. The allegations follow months of court proceedings over who should control a conservatorship overseeing the finances and medical decisions of Ms. Birdsong, 84, who was once part of a Motown group that became music royalty.

What putting up a bird feeder can lead to

Blame the bird feeders — all three of them (plus a bird bath and a hummingbird feeder, of course). It’s hard to describe what happens, but it comes upon you like a cascade of feathered dopamine: You get a bird feeder. Then, the birds start to come to your bird feeder! While you can certainly outfit your bird community with top-of-the-line accoutrement, it’s not that expensive — and just as satisfying — to just have a single feeder. Even the most humble sparrow or house wren has its own little personality, its own little dramas and peculiarities.

The South Carolina Supreme Court reversed course last summer when it upheld the ban after striking down a similar version. An earlier lawsuit by Planned Parenthood argued that the law violated patients' right to privacy. Susanna Birdsong, a lawyer for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, responded that abortion providers have had to make that more conservative interpretation because of the “onerous penalties” for noncompliance. Planned Parenthood has stopped providing abortions when “early embryonic electrical activity” is visible by ultrasound, the group wrote in Monday's filing. “We’re righting for every inch of ground in South Carolina," Birdsong said.

CNN —For me, writing a haiku a day began as a practice on my birthday, October, 2022. As my birthday rolled around that fall, the idea of writing a haiku a day was simply a way of promising myself that that day, I’d steady myself make note of — ha — just one thing. No matter the day, I was sure I could find a way to write down one sentence, one spattering of roughly 17 syllables. Tink Boord-Dill wrote in that liked that he loved writing haiku because it was daily creativity without performance pressure. EIN BOKEK, Israel (AP) — For evacuees of Kibbutz Be’eri, the salty waters of the lowest point on earth, known for their healing powers, are little comfort for a grief that feels bottomless. Kibbutz leaders recite the names that have officially migrated from lists of the missing to lists of the dead. Only 3,000 hotel rooms across the country are still available, according to the Israel Hotel Association, and many evacuated border communities have scattered to find shelter. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Abortion providers are trying to lengthen the narrow window when they can legally terminate a pregnancy under a strict new ban in South Carolina. Spokespeople for both the South Carolina Senate majority leader and speaker of the House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A decision in their favor would mark a big shift in the number of people able to legally obtain abortions at Planned Parenthood facilities in Columbia and Charleston. “It means the difference between turning away 50% of people and turning away 90% of people,” Susanna Birdsong, the general counsel for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, told the AP. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic Communications Director Molly Rivera said the group is now fighting “for every inch of ground" after failing to get the new law completely struck.

Some mosquitoes are actually helpfulThe first problem to tackle here is the word “all.” There are more than 3,000 recognized mosquito species worldwide. Healy, who is also president of the American Mosquito Control Association, offered Louisiana, which is home to many swamps where mosquitoes thrive, as an example. “Disease-transmitting mosquito species, such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are invasive species in many parts of the world. As for the Anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit malaria, things are a little different. … We are constantly educating mosquito control workers to follow these practices.

An hour-and-a-half drive away from the museum – and roughly 9,000 feet above it – stands Mount Evans, a popular tourist destination and towering testament to a key figure behind the massacre. It can be replaced with a name that brings healing.”Now, yearslong efforts to rename Mount Evans are tantalizingly close to fruition. JoyHeart emphasizes that the ongoing conversation about changing the name of Mount Evans highlights the enduring influence of historical events on present-day Native communities. But in March, the board deferred a vote on the name change after the Montana-based Northern Cheyenne tribe requested a consultation on the new name. But if you think you see where that’s going, you will be both right and wrong; Baker’s structures are so strong and yet open that, within them, anything or its opposite may happen at any moment. “Infinite Life” (a co-production with Britain’s National Theater) gets that and more from James Macdonald, who has notably staged plays by Baker in London and by the British playwright Caryl Churchill here in New York. Indeed, “Infinite Life” most closely reminded me of Churchill’s great “Escaped Alone,” in which four women sit in a garden chatting into the apocalypse. They are all expressions of Baker’s refusal to reduce the world to a unitary lesson; “Infinite Life” offers moral philosophy but no moral. Which, by the way, is what “Daniel Deronda,” past page 152, is about — and “Infinite Life” is always.

“The isle is full of noises,” sings Caliban, and on Tuesday night it certainly was. Yet all of them melted away, as they usually do, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, where the Public Theater’s new musical version of “The Tempest” was giving its opening-night performance. “The Tempest” makes for a fitting farewell, having opened the series, in a different adaptation, in 2013. That “Tempest” introduced the innovative Public Works idea: civic theater made for everyone, with members of local community organizations performing alongside professional actors. He must also release from servitude his chief sprite, Ariel, and his monstrous slave, Caliban.

NESKUCHNE, Ukraine, June 13 (Reuters) - Reuters journalists gained access to the newly liberated Ukrainian village of Neskuchne on Tuesday, confirming that Ukraine's forces have been advancing in the early phase of a counteroffensive against Russia's invasion. The yellow and blue Ukrainian flag was fluttering in the breeze over the ruins of a grocery store where it was placed. "Three days ago Russian forces were still here. After seven months of a major Russian offensive that yielded scant gains, Ukraine began its counterassault last week.

According to Dr. Doolittle’s research, the song patterns of Eurasian blackbirds found in that region resemble Stravinsky’s compositional style. Neuroscience research points to the idea that this affinity between birds and humans is not so unusual. But the brains of monkeys and non-songbirds, like gulls, are organized in a different way, Dr. Bolhuis said. For example, both humans and birds can produce smash hits that evoke feelings in their listeners, the psychologist Dr. Tchernichovski explained. “This is the magic in music,” Dr. Tchernichovski said.

Why Bugs Buzz So Loudly in Our Ears

Physicist Helen Czerski explores the complex science behind familiar phenomena. The birdsong has stepped up a notch, it’s no longer dark when I leave work, and colorful flower buds are peeping out of London’s greenery. Accompanying this cheerful celebration, last week the first fly of the season buzzed in through the window and parked itself on top of a pile of books. Insects are important and I’m happy to share a bit of space with them, but they are astonishingly loud for their size. This one strutted about for a while and disturbed my reading every time it took off.

A Rafting Trip in Utah For Only the Lucky Few

AS THE CURRENT of the upper San Juan River pushed past me, I balanced on a paddleboard wedged into a rock cluster on one of its banks. The green waters flowed down the same southeast Utah course they’d carved for millions of years, indifferent to my desire to stay put and contemplate the rock art—an array of handprints—on the cliff above. I’d almost missed this display, which my guidebook estimated to be about a thousand years old, give or take a century, its author noting that the handprints’ significance is unknown. As I took in the mysterious art, the only sounds were birdsong and river burbles, and soon, I gave in to the unrelenting downstream push of the water. I had to catch up with my friends Theresa and James and their 5-year-old daughter, Fiadh, on the sapphire-blue, 16-foot raft just downriver, not to mention the supplies we’d packed for our three-night voyage.
