It was a familiar scene Friday for Team USA in the men's 4x100-meter relay, as their formidable speed was halted once again by a botched baton pass. The U.S. men's team entered the relay final as gold medal favorites, in theory, as the reigning world champions and fastest qualifiers. Christian Coleman of the United States struggles to hand the baton to teammate Kenneth Bednarek in the men's 4x100-meter relay final on Friday. Women's 100-meter silver medalist Sha'Carri Richardson anchored the U.S. effort, earning her first Olympic gold. It's the U.S. women's 12th Olympic medal in the event and their win was an improvement on their second-place finish in Tokyo.

Fortunately, the third round (after a “Queen Charlotte” detour) has the highly sympathetic Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) at its core, adding some additional sweetness to the formula. For the uninitiated, poor Penelope has spent two seasons secretly moonlighting as the acid-tongued gossip Lady Whistledown (still voiced by Julie Andrews, because, well, Julie Andrews! (There’s a praying mantis quality to Bridgertons, since while mating doesn’t lead to death, they do tend to lose their heads and then mostly disappear.) Give some credit to the casting and, more pragmatically, the strength of Netflix as a platform relative to the more rarefied homes for such fare. “Bridgerton” begins its third season May 16 on Netflix, with the second half to premiere on June 13.

Watch “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “Full Metal Jacket” (1987) or “Platoon” (1986) and you should know what war really means. “Ungentlemanly Warfare” features a disreputable band of riff raff brought together for a super-secret mission. Ritchie makes no such concessions to authenticity in “Ungentlemanly Warfare.”Henry Cavill is Gus March-Phillips in Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." Even when a war movie doesn’t actively mislead you, the promise of being privy to an unvarnished, authentic and extreme experience can be seductive. “It would decay in eternal peace.”Compared to that kind of cult of authentic war, “Ungentlemanly Warfare” feels fairly harmless, and not in a bad way.

After sweeping the Emmys with the previous iteration of its cast, the Netflix drama looks ready to limp across the finish line unbowed, but slightly bloodied. Splitting the final season into two parts, the first four episodes focus on a pair of relationships in the wake of the divorce that shook the world. Fflyn Edwards as Prince Harry, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana and Rufus Kampa as Prince William in "The Crown" Season 6. New York CNN —For fervent fans of Starbucks, the holidays officially kick off this week with the arrival of its seasonal cups. Beginning Thursday, customers at its US locations will have their hot drinks served in one of four festive cups that are “clad in holiday red and Starbucks greens and a mood-boosting magenta,” according to a release. Holiday sales are important for the coffee chain: Last year, revenue grew 14% compared to a similar time period the year before, according to the company. Starbucks first rolled out seasonal cups in 1997. Starbucks reports earnings Thursday, perhaps providing a glimpse of what it expects this year’s holiday sales to be.

Just inside the entryway stood a walking stick with a man’s tiny numbered head for a knob. “Do any of you guys know what phrenology is?” asked the tour guide, a young woman named Lila. “By now, of course, we know that connecting the lumps and bumps of a person’s skull to their inner personality traits is a total pseudoscience,” Lila said. The walking stick, she explained, was a reference to, you guessed it, Orson Squire Fowler, the octagon superfan who had inspired the gleaming bauble in which we stood. Not unlike an interior-design version of the game “Telephone”).

The wreckage of a Russian drone inscribed with the message "Happy New Year" was discovered in Kyiv. Russia has ramped up its air strikes on Ukraine in recent days, including on New Year's Eve. The strikes across Ukraine on New Year's Eve also included at least 20 cruise missiles, officials said. Russia said the latest strikes targeted locations involved in the manufacture of drones, with the aim of limiting attacks on Russia. Ukraine has repeatedly said that Russia rarely hits military targets, and mostly harms ordinary people and civilian infrastructure.
Festive season in Moscow incorporates symbols of conflict

MOSCOW, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Outside the gates of Moscow's Gorky Park, the three Latin letters Z, V and O - frontline military symbols now used to promote the conflict in Ukraine - loom on plinths. Nearby, traditional festive decorations and a giant decorative bauble jostle for attention as parents and children walk into the park to ice skate or visit cafes. The "special military operation", which the Kremlin paints as an existential conflict with the West, has come to predominate over typical holiday decorations in the Russian capital. Inside the park, there's a pavilion that contains a studio where people can record New Year and Christmas video messages for troops. On Red Square, a pavilion was set up for people to donate gifts and humanitarian aid to troops.
This 20-inch giant bauble caught our eye from across the store. There's no way you can hang this on your Christmas tree, but it would definitely brighten up any room with its LED lights. It cost $134. Kate Duffy/Insider
CNN —Taylor Swift is breaking yet another record thanks to the release of her most recent album “Midnights.”The entertainer, who already became Spotify’s most-streamed artist over a 24-hour period upon the release of the record earlier this month, now claims all top ten slots of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, according to the music charting website on Monday. Swift is the first artist to ever accomplish the feat in Billboard’s 64-year history. She beat Drake, who in September 2021 claimed nine of the Hot 100’s top 10 spots for a week. According to Billboard, the Hot 100 list “blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data.”At the top of the list this week is “Anti-Hero,” the lead single off of “Midnights,” which is Swift’s tenth studio album. The other nine slots are also claimed by songs from the new album, including the tracks “Lavender Haze” and “Karma.”The accomplishment gives Swifties yet another reason to rejoice, adding yet another bauble to their beloved artist’s “bejeweled” crown.
An irresistible force and an immovable object: that would be Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett on Friday evening at Radio City Music Hall where they sang more than 30 standards, separately and together, before a respectful multigenerational audience that tilted older. The immovable object was Mr. Bennett, a living monument at 88, who, when he moved across the stage, proceeded slowly, cautiously and with dignity. With his customary grace and humility, Mr. Bennett embodied the patriarch of American popular song he has been for the last two decades. Around him fluttered that irresistible force, Lady Gaga, 29, an eccentric living bauble, in a succession of extravagant showgirl outfits and wigs. The chemistry between the performers in this Cheek to Cheek tour is noticeably different from the cuddly granddad and granddaughter intimacy of their videos.
