… You two have changed pop music forever.”Dan Nigro and Chappell Roan speak with Brandi Carlile at The Grammy Museum on Nov. 7 in Los Angeles. Some frustration was expressed over the inability of execs to “get” Roan from the outset, not least of all from Carlile. “I think I’m better at it now. “I think that’s why it was so heavy. “I think that’s absolutely gorgeous.

Afghan women are forbidden from praying loudly or reciting the Quran in front of other women, according to a Taliban government minister. It’s the latest restriction on women following morality laws that ban them from raising their voice and baring their faces outside the home. Nobody from the Vice and Virtue Ministry was immediately available Wednesday to clarify the official’s remarks or confirm if the prohibition would also become part of the morality laws. Afghan provinces are already barring the media from showing images of living things, another controversial and widely criticized feature of the morality laws. The Taliban set up the ministry for the “propagation of virtue and the prevention of vice” after seizing power in 2021.

I’m 36 — when do I have to give up crop tops?
  + stars: | 2024-09-01 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —As a pre-teen in Y2K, the (small) shadows of crop tops loomed large. In a decade when unforgiving low-rise jeans were the norm — and criticism over women’s bodies perfunctory — crop tops were not casual, easy wear; any softness of the torso was considered an aberration. Now that I’m 36, crop tops have become an unlikely staple in my wardrobe, and I’m reluctant to let them go. Can I still wear crop tops in my forties? I can also keep wearing crop tops for as long as I feel like it — after all, whenever I see a woman a generation ahead of me owning her personal style and at ease with herself, it gives me something to aspire to.

CNN —When women first competed in Olympic track and field events in 1928, they wore loose t-shirts and wide shorts, sometimes cinched with a belt. Nike's design for the US women's team outfit, right, is seen in an image posted to X by @CitiusMag. The controversy follows a headline-making protest at the 2020 Tokyo Games, when the German women’s gymnastics team rejected bikini-cut unitards in favor of fuller coverage, in a statement against “sexualization in gymnastics,” the German Gymnastics Federation said at the time. Famously worn by Beyoncé and Jennifer Aniston, the triangle top was inherently Brat two decades before “Brat girl summer” was officially coined. The triangle spawned offshoots too — its sister, the scarf top, was suggestively tied into a bra by Christina Aguilera. Gigi Hadid, on the red (and yellow) "Deadpool and Wolverine" carpet with friend Blake Lively, who wore a red catsuit with lace embellishment by Versace. Emily Ratajowski, Bella Hadid and Sydney Sweeney have all worn variations on the style, with Kylie Jenner repping the same Miu Miu top and skirt set as Hadid’s in black last month. Though triangle tops are meant to seem easy and breezy, they can be a nuisance for small and large breasts alike; they’re also impractical anywhere there’s wind or an air conditioner.

The 15 Most Unforgettable Looks From Cannes
  + stars: | 2024-05-28 | by ( The Styles Desk | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Cannes Festival jury led by Greta Gerwig announced its winners this weekend, including the Palme d’Or for “Anora,” a comedy from the American filmmaker Sean Baker about a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch. The ceremony concluded 10 full days filled with movies and long ovations, news conferences peppered with politics, a filmmaker’s return, women-led films that caused a stir, a president’s origin story and, of course, canine stars. But the Côte d’Azur’s red carpet proved also to be a bonanza, where stars upped the ante on style, wearing bright swaths of color, statement hats that canceled out the need for any SPF — and baring skin, lots of it. Here, 15 looks worth remembering.

However, Grande did "Eternal Sunshine" a disservice with its title and marketing. But asked if she planned to "address things" with "Eternal Sunshine," Grande demurred. Sure, you could say that Grande doesn't owe us honesty or specificity, and you might be right. As a staunch believer in the album as an art form, "Eternal Sunshine" left me wanting. “Dune: Part Two” and its A-list cast jump-started moviegoing in North America after a dismal start to the year. The science-fiction sequel sold an estimated $81.5 million in tickets in the United States and Canada from Thursday night to Sunday, the biggest opening for a Hollywood film since “Barbie” in July. (Taylor Swift’s concert documentary arrived to $93 million in October.) “Dune: Part Two,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, collected an additional $97 million overseas. But Legendary also needed to sell the film’s more delicate story — a boy becoming a man, a guy falling in love — which would be more difficult without cast interviews.

The Kansas City Chiefs enter Sunday’s Super Bowl having already won — when it comes to commercials. Over the past year, the star players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, along with Coach Andy Reid, have been inescapable to TV viewers. The estimated amount spent to air the ads on television was $178 million for Mr. Mahomes, $120 million for Mr. Kelce and $69 million for Mr. Reid, according to iSpot.tv, an ad measurement company. Because there were several commercials in which at least two of the three appeared, the dollar totals have some overlap. Basically, the more spend an ad has, the more viewers are seeing it.

The Crown, the Cabinet and the UK’s legacy of slavery

British banks backed large parts of the U.S. slavery economy, and British factories were the world’s largest customers for the cotton produced by plantations in southern U.S. states. In 1663, it was granted a monopoly by King Charles II for the British slavery trade. In 1794, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin, a machine that would transform the U.S. slavery economy. Mill owners including the Arkwrights, one of the richest families in the industry, were Smith family clients. Two British travel writers visited Farm Pen in 1837, when the land was still in Smith family hands.

Two years of post-shutdown theater has brought to New York stages a slew of solo performers wrestling with subjects like grief, death and the apocalypse — and those are just the comedies. Solo shows are inexpensive to produce and relatively low-lift endeavors for an industry still on shaky ground. Dive into the highlights of this Spring/Summer 2024 ready-to-wear collections from Paris, including the end of an era at Alexander McQueen as its lauded designer Sarah Burton presented her final show. From the profound artistry of Kate Middleton’s wedding gown – a garment that transcended royal expectations – to her final collection’s poignant motifs, Burton proved her mettle time and again.
