How different a commander in chief will Trump be?
  + stars: | 2024-11-17 | by ( Peter Bergen | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +27 min
On the face of it, there are sizable differences in foreign policy between Trump and President Joe Biden. In October, the Biden administration again helped to intercept a barrage of around 200 Iranian ballistic missiles, which also caused minimal damage to targets in Israel. Bringing US troops homeIn 2020, the Trump administration signed a US withdrawal agreement from Afghanistan with the Taliban. But after McMaster was pushed out of office in 2018, the Trump administration negotiated with the Taliban the withdrawal agreement of all US forces from Afghanistan. Nonetheless, the incoming Trump administration seems intent on resurrecting Schedule F, an executive order issued in the last months of the first Trump term.

Wall Street appears to have given Nvidia a mulligan. A number of positive headlines around AI demand have lifted Nvidia and other stocks that benefit from the adoption of the buzzy tech. "There's kind of a do-over in terms of what happened with [CEO Jensen Huang], what happened with Nvidia," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street," referring to the response to its much-ballyhooed earnings report Aug. 28 . The Investing Club also has a stake in Broadcom, which like Nvidia had been punished after its recent earnings report. Advanced Micro Devices , another AI chipmaker, and Eaton , which makes electrical equipment used in the expanding data center market, have added about 13% and 7%, respectively, this week.

Jeannie Epper had at least 100 screen roles, maybe even 150 — no one is quite sure. But because she was a stunt double, galloping on horseback, crashing cars and kicking down doors for the stars of films and television shows, hers was not a household name. In her heyday, however, Ms. Epper was ubiquitous. She hurtled through the air most weeks as Lynda Carter’s stunt double on the hit television series “Wonder Woman” and mimed Ms. Carter’s leggy lope. Ms. Epper, whose bruising career spanned 70 years, died on Sunday at her home in Simi Valley, Calif. She was 83.

Tesla investors’ nerve-racking rideTesla has hardly been keeping quiet as it prepares to announce earnings on Tuesday. These developments are the latest signs that Tesla is confronting its toughest stretch in years — and many shareholders aren’t convinced that the company and its C.E.O., Elon Musk, are taking the right steps to address it. The latest: During the weekend, Tesla cut prices of several models in China, the U.S. and Europe. Those moves came a day after Tesla voluntarily recalled nearly 4,000 Cybertrucks over a faulty accelerator pedal that could get stuck. It’s all apparently keeping Musk so busy that he canceled a trip to India, during which he was expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announce plans to build a factory there.

Given the company's track record, it is not surprising to us that its stock isn't working after these much-ballyhooed claims. Meanwhile, Cramer is critical of an upgrade of Freeport-McMoRan after the stock has gained 35% since the beginning of March. In December 2022, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the key maker of the world’s most cutting-edge chips, said it planned to spend $40 billion in Arizona on its first major U.S. hub for semiconductor production. The much ballyhooed project outside Phoenix — with two new factories, including one with more advanced technology — became a symbol of President Biden’s quest to spur more domestic production of chips, the slices of silicon that help all manner of devices make calculations and store data. Then last summer, TSMC pushed back initial manufacturing at its first Arizona factory to 2025 from this year, saying local workers lacked expertise in installing some sophisticated equipment. Last month, the company said the second plant wouldn’t produce chips until 2027 or 2028, rather than 2026, citing uncertainty about tech choices and federal funding. Progress at the Arizona site partly depends on “how much incentives that the U.S. government can provide,” Mark Liu, TSMC’s chairman, said in an investor call.

Some of that loss may be because of disappointing news about the Cybertruck’s pricing and availability. But some may also reflect renewed concern about Elon Musk’s latest comments, made at the DealBook Summit this week, and whether his self-inflicted damage at X is distracting from his other businesses. Advertisers aren’t impressed by Musk’s recent tirade. On Wednesday, he asserted that brands were trying to “blackmail” him by suspending their advertising after he endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory on X. “There is no advertising value that would offset the reputational risk of going back on the platform,” Lou Paskalis, the founder and C.E.O.

The update, according to two people with knowledge of the talks, was that there is no update — at least about the much-ballyhooed tie-up between Schonfeld and its much larger rival, $60 billion Millennium Management. Whether investors will pull a significant chunk of capital or stand by the firm won't crystallize until 5 p.m. Thursday. Schonfeld, whose assets stood at $11.7 billion in October, has experienced two years of lackluster returns following a period of rapid expansion. Schonfeld management was courting several institutional investors, and in early October, the Financial Times reported that Millennium threw its hat in the ring. In the event of some form of tie-up with Millennium, there would be redundancies, especially in corporate and back-office roles.

CNN —It’s not surprising that Apple’s debut Monday of its $3,499 Vision Pro headset integrating virtual and augmented reality was greeted with mixed reactions, including skepticism, criticism and even lampooning. Each previous incarnation of a headset that immerses the wearer in a virtual world (called virtual reality, or VR) or lets wearers see their surroundings with virtual objects overlaid on them (augmented reality, or AR) started with overhyped expectations only to flame out. I am also doing my doctoral research on the history of virtual and augmented reality (known together as “extended reality”). These apps will be available to Vision Pro users as well. It’ll do anything your Mac or iPhone can do — and more.”And that’s why I believe that over time Apple’s Vision Pro will actually make science fiction scenarios of ubiquitous computing a reality.

Their conclusion: 19% of workers hold jobs in which at least half their tasks could be completed by AI. Researchers at Microsoft and its subsidiary GitHub recently divided software developers into two groups — one with access to an AI coding assistant, and another without. Amazon has built its own AI coding assistant, CodeWhisperer, and is encouraging its engineers to use it. Another argument from the optimists: Even as AI takes over the bulk of coding, human coders will find new ways to make themselves useful by focusing on what AI can't do. So maybe, long term, human coders will survive in some new, as-yet-to-be-determined role.
Suns acquire Kevin Durant from Nets, say media reports

The Suns add Durant to an underachieving squad that sits at 30-26, tied for fourth place in the Western Conference. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday. In 39 games this season, Durant is averaging 29.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists. He averaged 9.5 points and 2.8 rebounds for Brooklyn, well below his career norms of 15.1 points and four rebounds. As he heads to the eighth team in his NBA career, he has averages of 9.6 points and 4.3 rebounds.
a hedge fund recruiter said, commenting on the calculus for hedge fund investors. At the end of 2021, the fund's exposure had been evenly split between fixed-income and equities, according to the investor documents. In all, more than 60 portfolio managers departed or were let go in 2022, according to the investor documents and people close to the matter. After the shakeup, ExodusPoint's income stream is now even more reliant on fixed-income trading — and that may not be such a bad thing. "The fixed income piece is doing incredibly well," another hedge fund recruiter said.
It’s not that theatrical film exhibition was in a particularly good place before the pandemic. Yet the astounding box-office figures of 2022 tell a different story: Movie theaters didn’t become obsolete. It offered up the best of the moviegoing experience: spectacle, plus quality, plus rewatchability. But best of all, the hunger for the overly familiar was not the only story to be told this year. But if the pandemic-era absence of theatrical releases proved one thing, it’s that people love going to the movies, really love it, and not just to see Marvel movies.
Edge & Node, the startup behind the Web3 protocol The Graph, has a new interim CEO, Brandon Ramirez. The same goes for the developers seeking to build decentralized apps, or dapps, as they're commonly called. Companies such as the decentralized-finance startups Sushi and Lido and the crypto research startup Messari have used The Graph for their development. Like many blockchain developers, Ramirez earned his programming chops in enterprise software. Ramirez, Tal, and Pohlmann founded The Graph in 2018 to help create some of that basic infrastructure.
