And these designers aren’t using just any old jet — they’re purposefully picking Whitby jet, which is widely considered the gold standard of jewelry-ready jet. And “Whitby jet is definitely in the running for the best jet in the world,” explained Steele, who also co-owns Ebor Jetworks, an historic jet workshop and retail shop in the town. Whitby jet is renowned for being pitch-black in color and tough in temperament. Generally speaking, Whitby jet won’t crack or fade over time, like less hearty, no-name jets are wont to do. “There’s not enough jet out there and you can’t buy big pieces of jet” said Steele.

Paris CNN —True to his theatrical form, Thom Browne’s fall 2024 couture show opened with spectacle. The collection featured couture made from muslin "toiles" as well as intricate embroidery and needlework in gold, silver and bronze. Thom Browne (which has, since 2018, been part of Zegna group who own a 90% stake) is also a ready-to-wear business currently offered in over 300 department-stores and boutiques across 40 countries, as well as in 110 Thom Browne retail stores. “I like to entertain and to ground it in beautifully made clothes.”"The work in progress becomes the final work... Couture," wrote Thom Browne in their show notes, of the decision to use toile in the collection. Kristy Sparow/Getty ImagesPerhaps surprisingly for a couture collection, it was muslin — the simple, lightweight cotton used to create initial mock-ups of clothes (called “toiles”) at ateliers — that comprised much of Browne’s finished pieces.

Where Does Chanel Go From Here?

Earlier this month Virginie Viard, the creative director of Chanel, the second largest luxury brand in the world by sales, left the house. Though critics (including this one) had generally disliked her work, which was awkward and seemed to equate shorts with fresh ideas, Chanel management had always declared its loyalty to her, and the revenue kept going up — to almost $20 billion last year. One week Ms. Viard was showing her cruise collection in Marseille, France; a few weeks later, she was gone. According to Bruno Pavlovsky, the president of fashion at Chanel, Ms. Viard did not have anything to do with the couture show held this week. That’s saying something, given the most memorable feature of her last couture was that every look was paired with shiny white tights.

Her youthful obsession realized in front of her, Ella was inspired to buy her first piece of Lolita fashion in 2015, from the popular Lolita e-tailer Angel Pretty. While Lolita style is named after Vladimir Nabokov’s eponymous teen in the controversial 1955 novel, the overlap ends there. Even 1950s-style American prom dresses, with their extravagant skirts and bodices, influence contemporary Lolita fashion, he said. The skirt's fullness, achieved through the use of a petticoat, is a key characteristic of Lolita fashion. Ella says her personal Lolita style is a blend of classic and sweet, with a healthy dose of prints and patterns.

Today, that union of minds finds refuge in Prague in a retrofitted factory building called Paralelní Polis, or "parallel world." Alongside classic beach towns like Bodrum and Alaçatı, two of the coast’s loveliest spots are the little-known seaside town of Ayvalık and the nearby island of Cunda. Near the Taksiyarhis Memorial Museum, in a beautifully renovated historic house with large arched windows, is Moyy Atölye. For a truly Aegean dining experience inside an olive grove, Karina Ayvalık is worth the 10-minute drive south to the village of Küçükköy. “I can breathe in the Aegean air and feel history as I walk through the old streets with their historic houses. Getting lost on Cunda leads to discoveries – like the Cunda Taksiyarhis Rahmi M. Koç Museum inside a renovated Greek Orthodox church with a collection of antique cars, motorcycles and toys.
