We tell children — or at least we used to — that actions have consequences. Donald Trump is the living, lying contradiction of that. You thought that changed with a Manhattan jury’s verdict five weeks ago? Only amplified the theatrical ardor with which Republican politicians pledged their devotion. Oh, and his sentencing has now been delayed and the conviction itself thrown into doubt, thanks to a supremely reckless Supreme Court.

I just don’t get Taylor Swift

I just don’t get Taylor Swift. Again, I respect the Taylor Swift lovers. The Cut recently published a piece by a woman who ended a relationship with a friend who didn’t like Taylor Swift. However, the days of Taylor Swift as an ultimate cultural barometer may be waning. If you don’t love Taylor Swift, if you don’t hate her; if she is simply not something that affects your life whatsoever, it’s probably safe to come out now.

There’s nostalgic art. Then there’s art that seems like somebody thawed it after 30 frozen years. They’re by the Indigo Girls. Many of them are songs the Indigo Girls made a certain kind of popular during the years of that very bonanza. Both “Barbie” and the final sequence of a particularly exhilarating episode of “Transparent” use the same Indigo Girls hit (“Closer to Fine”) in a way that proves the power of this music to gather together, win over, wear down, wind up.

Last Saturday, a crowd of several hundred people gathered in a grassy field near the bank of the Rio Grande in Quemado, Texas, for a rally in support of the state’s defiant stance on immigration. The event, which was held by the protest group Take Our Border Back, marked the final stop of a dayslong convoy of conservative Americans who, in a procession of cars, trucks and mobile homes, made their way to Quemado to demonstrate their frustration over what they see as the federal government’s failure to enforce immigration laws at the border. A response to the intensifying confrontation over border security and immigration between the Biden administration and the Texas governor, Greg Abbott, the event featured an unexpected blend of political anger and religious ardor.

The ABCs of Modern Life, According to Sheila Heti

ALPHABETICAL DIARIES, by Sheila Heti“No one at this point in history knows how to live, so we read biographies and memoirs, hoping to get some clues,” Sheila Heti writes in “Alphabetical Diaries,” her powerful and intimate new book. In “Alphabetical Diaries” Heti comes at this question slant, as Emily Dickinson advised truth tellers to do — so slant that you may feel you are in a ship that has been thrown sideways. The reader of “Alphabetical Diaries” will not be disappointed in this regard. Heti has done the really hard thinking about submission and its opposite. One four-letter word is zealously deployed in this book, and that word is not “love.”

I love the Black church and admire its noble commitment to moral ardor and social justice. But too often it has slacked on love and compassion for queer folk. So, for Black queers, Beyoncé’s stadium has become a sanctuary. But Beyoncé’s attitude suggests a seismic shift, by explicitly embracing the forces that have previously only secretly shaped the Black religious sensibility. In a way, Beyoncé is what we call a process theologian: a theologian who believes that becoming takes priority over being and that temporal processes influence our understanding of God.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

She was arrested, briefly, in March after she encouraged protesters to block a highway. Dr. Bressler sealed her status as a symbol of the protest movement last month when she led a miles-long column of demonstrators on a multiday march to the hills of Jerusalem from coastal Tel Aviv. It evoked a biblical pilgrimage, and they picked up tens of thousands of supporters during the journey. Somebody noticed that one of Dr. Bressler’s shoes was torn and asked for her shoe size. “It’s rare that you recognize you are in a real-time historical moment,” Dr. Bressler said during an interview in the cafe, reflecting on the events of the past few months.

[1/5] Elderly visitors enjoy the sunshine, at a nursing home of Lendlease's Ardor Gardens in Shanghai, China February 27, 2023. Lim says "stigma" around retirement homes in China is quickly disappearing. About 4% of people aged 65 and over in Britain live in retirement homes, according to information service Lottie. Ding Hui, China managing director at Australian real estate firm Lendlease (LLC.AX), expects demand for retirement homes to rise sharply in the next five to 10 years. Government-run nursing homes with basic facilities in Shanghai and Beijing are much cheaper, at about 2,000 yuan ($290) a month.
