A flurry of remarkably good economic news over the past week could create a daunting mandate for whoever is elected the next U.S. president: Don't mess it up. The whole damn world," President Joe Biden said Tuesday during an event announcing new infrastructure grants at the Port of Baltimore. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are both pitching themselves as the best steward of the future health of the U.S. economy. Trump has pledged universal tariffs on all imports from all countries, a sweeping immigrant deportation program, deepening corporate tax cuts and more. Economists and even some of Trump's own allies note that his proposed universal tariffs, mass deportations and tax cuts could, at least temporarily, send major shockwaves through the economy, triggering potential market crashes.

Goldman Sachs estimates that Helene could shave as much as 50,000 off the payrolls count, though Hurricane Milton probably happened too late to impact the October count. The Boeing strike, meanwhile, could lower the total by 41,000, added Goldman, which is forecasting total payrolls growth of 95,000. Data has been solidYet indicators leading up to the much-watched jobs report show that hiring has continued apace and layoffs are low, despite the damage done from the storms and the strikes. Still, the White House is estimating that the events cumulatively may hit the payrolls count by as many as 100,000. The "disruptions will make interpreting this month's jobs report harder than usual," Jared Bernstein, chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, said Wednesday.

As a global leader in digital payments, Visa has 4.2 billion credit and payment cards in circulation across more than 200 countries. Through its advanced transaction processing network, VisaNet, the company facilitates payment authorization, clearing, and settlement, and it is one of the most remarkable and consistent growth stories around — along with fellow payment processing company Mastercard. The following chart illustrates its remarkably consistent growth since the pandemic plunge (which naturally suspended considerable economic activity). While a 30 P/E is higher than the market's, the S & P trades closer to 26 times earnings; Visa should trade at a premium. The ability for consumer spending growth to continue apace is limited, so presumably, topline growth will slow somewhat.

Read previewThe AI arms race continues apace, with OpenAI competing against Anthropic, Meta, and a reinvigorated Google to create the biggest, baddest, model. OpenAI set the tone with the release of GPT-4 and competitors have scrambled to catch up, with some coming pretty close. But will it be enough to set OpenAI — which is apparently hemorrhaging billions of dollars — apart from the increasingly impressive array of other AI models on offer? He expects GPT-5 to be more like going from undergrad to a PhD program, better for sure but not necessarily Earth-shattering. Already many user are opting for smaller, cheaper models and AI companies are increasingly competing on price rather than performance.

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersImmigration — both authorized and unauthorized — has helped the U.S. job market sustain a fiery run in recent months without reigniting inflation, economists and analysts say. This dynamic — a heating job market and cooling inflation — is in part the result of increased inflows of immigrants. Typically, a hot labor market walks a tightrope that could easily collapse into reheated inflation. But the Brookings researchers recalculated the government's estimates — this time, factoring the impact of immigrants on the labor pool. They found that with immigration, the 2024 U.S. job market could safely absorb between 160,000 and 200,000 monthly job gains.

Those contrasting perspectives have gone down as demonstrating a gulf of understanding between the races. That gulf persists, but it narrows apace, and if the verdict came down today, it would be a lot less perplexing to many white people than it was back then. We might even see some of them applauding along with Black people. It isn’t that these people would celebrate Simpson himself, any more than the jurors did back in 1995. The evidence of Simpson’s deed was overwhelming despite the ineptitude of the prosecution team.

Spring is proceeding apace in this yard, despite my worst fears. After my neighbor’s death last year, a backhoe demolished the house and nearly all the old trees along with it. In most ways, it’s been a glorious spring anyway, despite the ceaseless hammering next door. The spring beauties and woodland violets are nearly bloomed out now, but already other flowers have taken their place. And yet, all spring, our yard has been bereft of nests.

It is therefore no surprise that the advent of big data, data analytics, and disruptive technologies such as generative AI have brought in sweeping changes and opportunities to reinvent critical business areas. When customers trust a business, it empowers the organization to pioneer groundbreaking initiatives, embracing risk to craft new products and refine existing ones. While the balance between trust and innovation emerges as a critical lever for progress, the role of transparency in cultivating and maintaining this trust cannot be overstated. Earned, not givenAs we recognize transparency's pivotal role in building trust, it becomes clear that trust in the digital age is earned, not given. Safeguarding consumer trust in an era increasingly dominated by sophisticated algorithms and artificial intelligence is more critical than ever.

The appalling attack on the vast Crocus City Hall concert venue and shopping complex near Moscow – claimed by ISIS – left more than 100 people dead. This is hardly the stability and security for which so many Russians voted for Putin. For years, the Kremlin strongman has been cast as a leader able to guarantee order in this vast, turbulent country. But now, the focus is firmly on the apparent reappearance in Russia of jihadists, unrelated to the Ukraine war or domestic opposition to the Kremlin. But for a leader who has promised security and stability to Russians, a large-scale terror attack on home soil is a powerful blow to his image.

The excitement around the arrival of bitcoin ETFs and the subsequent surge to new highs for the cryptocurrency is making even bitcoin bulls raise their expectations. "We raise our long-held price estimate to the USD 150,000 level from USD 100,000 given the more rapid pass-through from ETF inflows to the BTC price to date," the note said. The new bitcoin ETFs have pulled in billions of dollars from investors since their January launch, even with the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust seeing heavy outflows. The iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has raked in more than $12 billion on its own, according to FactSet. The quick growth of the bitcoin ETFs has boosted confidence that there are more investors interested in crypto who have been reluctant to buy it through crypto exchanges.

Recent job cuts have been concentrated mainly in just a few sectors: technology, finance and media. Relative to the U.S. labor force of 160 million people, layoffs so far have been dwarfed by consistently vigorous hiring — a monthly average of 248,000 jobs added over the past six months. THE LAYOFFS ARE SPREAD OVER TIMEHigh-profile job cuts typically involve many layoffs that aren't implemented immediately. So they weren't included in the January jobs data that was released Friday because the layoffs hadn't yet taken place. Jobs cuts are deeply distressing and disruptive for people who suffer them.

A Pennsylvania barber whose violent attacks on the police on Jan. 6, 2021, were widely seen as the tipping point in the storming of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob was convicted on Friday of federal assault charges. The barber, Ryan Samsel, was one of the first people to confront the police on Jan. 6 and push through barricades at what is known as the Peace Circle, allowing hundreds of others behind him to breach the grounds of the Capitol and ultimately the building itself. Prosecutors at a trial for Mr. Samsel and four co-defendants, who were also convicted of assault and other charges, said that the men’s actions “ignited a fire that burned for over four hours at the Capitol.”The guilty verdicts, returned by the judge after a bench trial in Federal District Court in Washington, were the latest reminders that the prosecutions of those who took part in the storming of the Capitol continue apace, even more than three years after the attack. This week alone, charges were unsealed against at least nine additional defendants, bringing the total number of people accused in connection with the Capitol attack to more than 1,260. The assault on the building has also found itself front and center in the 2024 presidential campaign as former President Donald J. Trump has lionized those who joined in it, referring to them as “hostages” and “political prisoners.” As he has often done with potential political liabilities, Mr. Trump has sought to flip the script on the Capitol attack and turn it to his electoral advantage through a campaign of persistent disinformation built around the assertion that the Justice Department is persecuting him and his supporters.

How the three-year cruise fell apart

CNN —In April 2023, George Fox was gearing up for the adventure of a lifetime: a three-year cruise taking him around the world. The high hopes and eventual failure of the Life at Sea cruise reads a bit like a Greek tragedy. When Miray objected, he resigned, along with much of his team, and told passengers the cruise was off. When the cruise was canceled in November, Bayramoğlu told passengers that only 111 cabins were booked. On October 24, Miray’s PR spokesperson told CNN that the departure date had been moved to November 30.

A gauge the Federal Reserve uses for inflation rose slightly in November and edged closer to the central bank's goal. On a six-month basis, core PCE increased 1.9%, indicating that if current trends continue the Fed essentially has reached its goal. "The slowing in core inflation opens the door for fed funds rate cuts in 2024; the timing will depend on core PCE numbers over the next few months." Though policymakers watch both measures, they are more concerned with core prices as a longer-run inflation gauge. A 2.7% slide in energy prices and a 0.1% decrease in food helped hold back inflation for the month.
