CNN —The elusive deep-water oarfish – considered to be a harbinger of bad news – was spotted yet again on the shores of Encinitas, California. “We took samples and froze the specimen awaiting further study and final preservation in the Marine Vertebrate Collection,” Ben Frable, manager of the Scripps Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, said in the post. “Like with the previous oarfish, this specimen and the samples taken from it will be able to tell us much about the biology, anatomy, genomics and life history of oarfish,” Frable said in the post. The fish was found in good condition according to the release, and it was taken in for examination and preservation to become a part of the organization’s Marine Vertebrate Collection. “It may have to do with changes in ocean conditions and increased numbers of oarfish off our coast,” Frable said.

AdvertisementTesla is offering three months of free Supercharging and FSD to customers taking deliveries of a new vehicle in 2024. The incentives come as Tesla strives to meet its target of delivering a record number of cars this year. The "new inventory vehicles" Tesla references in the promotion refer to Teslas that are already built and ready to be delivered. So if you kit out a Tesla model that isn't built in time for you to take delivery this year, you're out of luck. The threat of rising EV prices could push some would-be EV buyers to pull the trigger on a new Tesla before Trump takes office.

Don't expect 'huge swings' on mortgage ratesElection uncertainty contributed to an upward swing in mortgage rates during October. But now that we have a president-elect, mortgage rates are expected to gradually come down over time, Lautz said. Experts say that mortgage rates might head into a "bumpy" or "volatile" path over the next year. "Our expectation is that rates are going to be in the 6% range as we move into 2025," she said. For example, if you bought your home around this time last year, when mortgage rates peaked at around 8%, you might benefit from a mortgage refinance, Lautz said.

AdvertisementA 37-year-old manager at Microsoft says AI has changed his workflow. AI reduced his time spent on coding by 70%, and also cut time spent on reading and meetings, he says. Whatever time I'm getting back from leveraging AI, I'm using it for some other work. Once the developers start writing code for these projects and do the actual work, that's where we leverage AI. So that's why developers are using AI wherever they can to reduce their time, but they are using any time saved for other tasks or other features.

Workers are struggling to get a handle on their jobs, and this failure falls on everyone — companies, managers, human-resources departments, and, in some cases, the workers themselves. The chaos has left employers, managers, and employees wondering just how much time and money it's worth investing in training in the first place. It's tough to learn by osmosis over Slack, and the deluge of HR apps and training modules isn't filling in the gaps. As workers and managers are increasingly overextended, these types of unmeasured, softer activities can fall by the wayside. Gavin emphasized that it's not just on companies and managers to make sure employees are learning and getting onboarded but also on individual workers.

In fact, some borrowers are still paying off debt from last year's purchases. To that point, 28% of shoppers who used credit cards have not paid off the presents they bought for their loved ones last year, according to a holiday spending report by NerdWallet. However, this is a slight improvement from 2023, when 31% of credit card users had still not paid off their balances from the year before. Although overall credit card balances were 6.9% higher at the end of the third quarter compared to a year earlier, that's a significant improvement from the 15% year-over-year jump from Q3 2022 to Q3 2023, TransUnion found. Recent wage gains have also played a role, according to Paul Siegfried, TransUnion's senior vice president and credit card business leader.

President-elect Donald Trump wants to address housing affordability in the U.S. by fomenting the construction of new homes. "We're going to open up tracks of federal land for housing construction," Trump said during an Aug. 15 news conference. While building more homes is the simpler answer to address the housing issue in the country, other promises Trump has made could deter affordability efforts, experts say. He also claimed that he would pull down mortgage rates back to pandemic-era lows, although presidents do not control mortgage rates, experts say. Their findings, set out in a study published last month, suggest it’s a mix of human-caused climate change and the region’s unusual geology. Graphic shows the process by which warming temperatures and the region's unique geography can lead to explosive craters, according to new research. Vladimir Pushkare/Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration/AFP/Getty ImagesWhat most scientists do agree on, however, is that climate change is playing a role, and may lead to an increase in these explosive craters in the future. As climate change accelerates, he added, it may lead to more permafrost degradation, powerful gas blowouts and new craters. Not only are the craters affected by climate change, they also contribute to it.
