JetBlue Airways said Wednesday that it is seeking U.S. Department of Transportation approval to pair up with British Airways so the airlines could each expand their networks. The code-sharing agreement includes 75 destinations in the United States — 39 from New York and 36 from Boston — and 17 cities in Europe. Airlines frequently turn to code-sharing agreements, which allow carries to sell seats on airline partner's flights, to grow in regions outside their network. American Airlines also has a more than decade-old joint venture with British Airways across the Atlantic that is more involved than a code-sharing agreement. JetBlue's request for an agreement with British Airways comes a year after a federal judge struck down JetBlue's partnership with American in the U.S Northeast, which sought to allow the carriers to coordinate schedules and routes.

JetBlue Airways shares tumbled more than 10% in premarket trading Tuesday after the airline lowered its 2024 revenue forecast, a setback as it tries to return to profitability. The carrier said second-quarter revenue would likely drop as much as 10.5% on the year, more than double the decline analysts polled by LSEG expected. JetBlue has been on a cost-cutting spree, culling unprofitable routes, and focusing on those with steady demand and high sales for premium seats. JetBlue earlier this year said it would defer $2.5 billion in aircraft spending until the end of the year. Revenue dropped 5.1% from last year to $2.21 billion, matching LSEG revenue expectations.

As the Games flame was extinguished and fireworks boomed Santiago handed the baton to Barranquilla, Colombia, who will host the next Pan Ams in 2027. Colombia will stage the 2027 Games but so far no country has expressed interest in bidding for 2031. Chile finished with a best ever total of 79 medals but just 12 were gold, one short of what was taken in Lima. The Games had looked ready to end on a golden high for soccer mad Chile with both the men's and women's teams playing in the championship matches. Brazil, the only other country to pass 200 total medals, finished on 205 with 66 gold followed by Mexico (52/142) and Canada (46/164).

Esports joins Pan Am Games, but medals won't count

But any medals won will not be added to their country's official total as they were at the recent Asian Games where esports had full medal status and was one of the most popular events drawing huge enthusiastic crowds. Like the Asian Games the Pan Am competition will be closely watched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as Esports makes a push for a spot on the Olympic programme. While esports is making its Pan Am Games debut, gamers have been part of many other multi-sport competitions, including the Commonwealth and the European Games. One reason esports medals are not being counted at the Pan Am Games is that gamers are not subject to doping controls like every other athlete in Santiago. Authorities in Hangzhou ploughed $627 million into building a new esports venue while the Pan Am Games competition will be staged in a tent in a grassy corner of the Games fan zone.

SANTIAGO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Chileans celebrated one of their biggest nights of the Pan American Games on Tuesday with Santiago Adolfo Ford claiming decathlon gold and the women's soccer team winning a 2-1 thriller over the U.S. to reach the final. The judo competition closed with Cuba beating Brazil to win the mixed team title and the great Idalys Ortiz adding another gold to her glittering resume. It was the perfect Pan Am Games goodbye for the 34-year-old four-times Olympic medallist, who has announced she will retire after next year's Paris Summer Games. Fencing was an all-American battle on Tuesday with Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Nick Itkin and Magda Skarbonkiewicz taking gold. The U.S. continues to top the medal table with 76 gold while it closes in on 200 total medals with 178.

While there has been a lack of quality and depth across many of the sports in Santiago, it was never more glaring than at the first day of athletics. The Pan American region has for decades produced some of the world's greatest sprinters, including Usain Bolt. Viewers of Saturday's Perseid meteor shower might see up to 100 "fireballs" per hour at its peak. To best see them, move away from the city and let your eyes adapt to the night sky for half an hour. That's because fireballs are just what they sound like: exceptionally brilliant meteors that are rarer the brighter they are, according to the American Meteor Society. Lucky for meteor enthusiasts of all ages, the popular Perseid meteor shower , set to peak August 13, could bring up to 100 fireballs an hour, Insider previously reported. According to previous reporting from Insider, you have the best chance of seeing the shower in the pre-dawn hours.

In his role as a consultant, Mr. Heuermann was often the person brought in to make these sorts of determinations. Like so many professions, architecture can be punishingly stratified, and Mr. Heuermann, who by all accounts was extremely knowledgeable about the city’s labyrinthine building codes, did not fall on the visionary side of the spectrum. Last week a friend called to say that someone had been apprehended in the Gilgo Beach murders and that, however astonishingly, we both knew him. Mr. Heuermann had been in her apartment — deeply aggravating in the moment and intensely creepy in retrospect — and had been rude and dismissive when her architect called him out on a miscalculation he made. During her own renovation, she told me, workers discovered some rotting beams between her apartment and the one above, a problem that Mr. Heuermann said needed to be remedied with drawings for the replacements, which he would produce.

Shares in some Chinese metals companies rallied for a second session as investors bet that higher prices for gallium and germanium, which Beijing's export restrictions target, could boost revenues. China is the world's biggest producer of rare earths, a group of metals used in EVs and military equipment. Asked about the metals export curbs, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Wednesday the government's actions were reasonable and lawful. WARNING SHOTSome larger chip manufacturers view China's export controls on gallium as more of a warning shot about what economic pain the country could inflict. China's germanium ingot was priced at 9,150 yuan per kg on Tuesday, also flat on the day and on the week, Refinitiv data showed.

Landing a new job this year may take a while, a study from two HR firms suggests. It takes companies an average of 44 days to hire for an open role after posting the job. It takes companies an average of 44 days to fill an open position, a day longer than last year's hiring cycle, the report says. For their part, job candidates have started to express frustration over how long the recruitment process is taking. The company did not get back to her for over four weeks, and she later learned she didn't get the job.

Experts that CNBC Make It spoke to said they've observed a "significant increase" in the number of job seekers facing an extended interview process over the past year. That makes a total of 9 interviews, for a job that 32-year-old Ayomi Samaraweera said she did not eventually get. But the growing phenomenon of lengthy interviews reflects the highly competitive nature of the current job market, he added. "That's why recruiters are haphazardly adding steps to the interview process and it's a terrible candidate experience."
