Private brands — also called store brands and private-label brands — of foods and beverages have shared shelf space with national brands for years. Customer shopping habits are changing for goodIn the past, the value proposition of private brands was driven primarily by lower prices. But consumer attitudes are evolving, according to a recent survey by the Food Industry Association, which represents both food retailers and producers. And 46% said they expect to buy private brands somewhat or much more, compared to 27% saying that for national brands. "In the U.S., the market for private brands as an industry to eclipse national brands is not something we'll see," Baker said.

With Trader Joe's less than a mile from my doorstep, grabbing groceries with my 1-year-old daughter in tow was, frankly, relaxing. Read previewAn Olympics ad from Google depicting a father using its Gemini AI assistant to help his daughter compose a letter to her favorite athlete has drawn sharp criticism from online commentators. Google's "Dear Sydney" spot first aired on TV during the broadcast of the opening ceremony on July 24 and is also available on YouTube. Related stories"It follows a coherent story, focuses on characters with agency and vitality, and prioritizes people over the product," said Jon Evans, System1 chief customer officer, of Google's ad. Still, several ad experts have said Google's marketing department — which created the ad in-house rather than using an ad agency — should have done a better job of reading the room. The "Dear Sydney" spot was still airing on US TV on Tuesday morning, according to the measurement firm iSpot.

Only 15% of adults said they wrote a few checks a month in 2023, according to a recent report by GoBankingRates. In fact, in the years since the Covid pandemic, Americans have fully embraced contactless and digital payment methods, while check writing has steadily declined into near-oblivion. New York CNN —Stop & Shop is closing 32 underperforming grocery stores across the US northeast as part of the company’s efforts to improve its financial performance. Shoppers are also being squeezed by higher prices at the grocery store, with food prices experiencing modest upticks last month, according to the newest inflation report. Ahold Delhaize, the chain’s Dutch parent company, revealed the locations Friday adding that they will close in early November. Stop & Shop said it “remains committed to serving its communities through other store locations, online shopping and home delivery services.” Employees impacted by the closures will be offered other opportunities in the company. In addition to operating Stop & Shop, Ahold Delhaize owns Food Lion and Giant grocery stores in the US.

Dave Sekera, chief US market strategist at Morningstar, says that he’s watching for insights on banks’ delinquency rates. Consumers have increasingly fallen behind on or missed payments in recent months as they get squeezed by high interest rates. But banks could see higher losses compared to 2023 if the economy were to experience a downturn, the Fed warned. Investors are wagering that the central bank will begin easing rates as soon as September, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. “The worst outcome for all of us is what you call stagflation: higher rates and recession,” Dimon said in an interview with CNBC.

CNN —Target will stop accepting personal checks from customers starting July 15, the latest retailer to stop taking the increasingly rare form of payment and to try to make checkout less cumbersome for shoppers. “It’s hardly surprising Target has decided to stop accepting them,” said Neil Saunders, retail analyst at GlobalData. Around 61% of Americans are still writing checks, according to a 2024 report by Abrigo, a financial software solutions company. It also found that younger consumers, including Gen Z and Millennials, self reported writing more checks than older consumers from Gen X. The decision to stop accepting personal checks comes as the latest move in a series of changes to the retailer’s checkout experience.

Although larger grocery stores will offer a bigger variety, it generally won't be as vast as an American supermarket. For instance, urban grocery stores in Germany simply don't have the physical capacity the way many American grocery shops do, allowing American shops to stock numerous brands and types of the same product. You have to bag your own stuffAt most major American grocery stores, your groceries generally get bagged for you as you check out. Most Germans do their grocery shopping at standard and discount grocery stores. Opening times at German grocery stores may seem short in comparison to US storesMany Americans who visit Germany are surprised to find that German grocery stores have more limited opening times than they are used to.

New York CNN —Millions of Miniverse toy sets made by toymaker MGA Entertainment have been recalled because they pose a serious risk of skin burn, eye and respiratory irritation when touched, inhaled or ingested, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. The recall involves the “Make it Mini” sets which contain resins that, when liquid, can cause those injuries and irritations to young children and adults alike. The CPSC also found that the resins contain chemical compounds called “acrylates” in amounts that are prohibited in children’s products. The CPSC said MGA Entertainment has received 26 reports of incidents with the toy sets from children and adults, including reports of skin burns and irritation, and respiratory irritation, with one report that it triggered a case of asthma in the user. 21 million Miniverse toy sets are being recalled due to danger of skin burn, eye and respiratory irritation.

But retirees and full-time caregivers have been unable to take advantage of a strong job market. Now, consumers are largely left with the same buying power they had four years ago rather than having seen real income gains over that time that would have helped bolster their financial picture. The outlook for the job market also varies by race with the unemployment rate at 5.6% for Black workers and 5% for Hispanic workers. Food prices have risen around 25% over the past four years while Biden was in office. The rise in food prices has disproportionately impacted lower-income households, which spend around a third of their discretionary income on food, according to a 2022 Agriculture Department survey.

A slew of big-box retailers have lowered prices on items in recent weeks, citing moderating inflation and frugal customers. Recent economic data has also suggested that inflation is cooling, after data earlier this year spurred fears that progress had stalled. Yet Americans don’t seem convinced that inflation is moderating or that the economy is as healthy as indicators suggest. Mortgage rates have declined in recent weeks but remain near 7%. Target announced plans to cut prices on thousands of consumer basics as inflation cuts into household budgets.
